1940réf. B352London: Faber and Faber 1940. First. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Strangers and Brothers is the first volume of what became C.P. Snows 11 novel series of the same name. Published in the early days of WWII it is by far the scarcest volume in the series and dust jackets are extremely scarce. Paper was in very short supply during the war and thus jackets may have only been printed as books sold. One can see from the photos that the publisher resorted to printing the dust jackets for this title on the reverse of leftover dust jackets from other titles in this case a jacket from Perkin the Pedlar by Eleanor Farjeon. The publisher's list of available titles on the back of the jacket includes books not published until 1943 and thus is not an original 1940 jacket but any jacket of the war period is scarce nonetheless. This copy is near fine in green cloth with red titles on the spine. Slight scuffing at the corners and bumping at the spine ends are the only issues. No other marks or damage at all. The clipped dust jacket has minor soiling and some chipping and small tears at the edges but is overall very good and is still quite bright. FO. Faber and Faber hardcover

1815réf. 3205London c1815. 130 by 97mm. 5 by 3.75 inches. Engraved caricature map mounted on card original full wash colour. This humorous map is part of the series of cartographic caricatures - including England and Wales as here Scotland and Ireland - which Robert Deighton first produced in the late eighteenth century. England and Wales are depicted as John Bull with full tankard of beer in hand and riding a monstrous fish. The map like much of Dighton's caricatures would be published as a print by Carrington Bowles fl.1752-1793. Carington Bowles worked initially with his father John Bowles before leaving to take over his uncle Thomas Bowles II's business circa 1762. Carington Bowles was one of the most active mapsellers and publishers of his day in London. His business was continued by his some Henry Carington Bowles who in partnership with Samuel Carver continued to publish maps and prints well into the nineteenth century. unknown
