1940réf. B352London: Faber and Faber 1940. First. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Strangers and Brothers is the first volume of what became C.P. Snows 11 novel series of the same name. Published in the early days of WWII it is by far the scarcest volume in the series and dust jackets are extremely scarce. Paper was in very short supply during the war and thus jackets may have only been printed as books sold. One can see from the photos that the publisher resorted to printing the dust jackets for this title on the reverse of leftover dust jackets from other titles in this case a jacket from Perkin the Pedlar by Eleanor Farjeon. The publisher's list of available titles on the back of the jacket includes books not published until 1943 and thus is not an original 1940 jacket but any jacket of the war period is scarce nonetheless. This copy is near fine in green cloth with red titles on the spine. Slight scuffing at the corners and bumping at the spine ends are the only issues. No other marks or damage at all. The clipped dust jacket has minor soiling and some chipping and small tears at the edges but is overall very good and is still quite bright. FO. Faber and Faber hardcover
1940réf. B618London: Faber and Faber Ltd 1940. First. Hardcover. Good . Strangers and Brothers is the first novel in Snow's 11 novel series Strangers and Brothers but the second book according to the series narrative chronology. It was later published in the US under the title George Passant after the entire series took the title of the first volume. In the book George Passant is a solicitor in a small English town whose idealism and eccentricity lead him to accumulate a group of young followers in a mentor-like capacity. Narrated by Lewis Eliot the novel has the more general background of Eliot's rising career and the changes in English society through the 20th century. This copy is good in light blue green cloth with red titles on the spine. The covers show moderate edge wear and sunning primarily at the spine and edges. The corners are slightly bumped. The binding is quite sound although the front free blank endpaper has been cut out perhaps to remove a previous owner's name. There is a light ink name of a previous owner from Cambridge on the front pastedown and a scrawled blue pencil B on the half title page. No other marks or damage. The book is rather uncommon in this its true first edition published by Faber not to be confused with a later reissued first when Snow changed his publisher to Macmillan. . SnowÕs Strangers and Brothers takes centre stage in this moving account of his wartime years. The suicide of LewisÕs desperately vulnerable wife Sheila ends a marriage fraught with difficulty and pain and shakes his world to the foundations. As Britain enters the Second World War he is swept up into the civil service and meets Margaret Davidson a woman who may offer him emotional redemption à but who is already married. With its exceptionally sensitive and insightful exploration of the human condition Homecomings demonstrates C. P. SnowÕs masterly insight into character whether in the home or along the corridors of power. A meticulous study of the public issues and private problems of post-war Britain C. P. SnowÕs Strangers and Brothers sequence is a towering achievement that stands alongside Anthony PowellÕs A Dance to the Music of Time as one of the great romans-fleuves of the twentieth century.
