Parker and House of Commons 1843 and 1840. William Snow Harris was a physician and amateur scientist with the descriptive nickname "Thunder and Lightning Harris." In the 1820s he devised a new system for protecting ships from lightning strikes and in 1831 he had the opportunity to install his system on "HMS Beagle" for her second survey voyage. The trial was a success and Harris then spent years trying to convince the Royal Navy to make use of his invention. The men in charge at that time were hidebound and conservative and they rejected Harris's entreaties. He was persistent however and eventually brought the matter before Parliament. Their debate on this matter can be found at https://api.parliament.uk/historic-hansard/commons/1841/feb/18/lightning-conductors-mr-snow-harris They were generally favorable to the invention which was demonstrably superior to the system then in place on Royal Navy Ships. In 1840 certainly at Harris's urging the House of Commons ordered the publication of "Papers Respecting Mr. Harris's Lightning Conductors." This consisted of 8 folding lithographs describing and picturing installation of Harris's device on the 28-gun sixth rate "Sapphire" and the 84-gun third rate ship of the line "Asia" demonstrating the applicability of his invention on ships of all sizes. In 1842 the Royal Navy finally adopted Harris's conductors and in 1843 he published "On the Nature of Thunderstorms" explaining his device and the nature of lightning to the public. The book has scattered light foxing with many pages unopened. Bound in publisher's blind stamped cloth showing light wear. Impressione eccellente dai contrasti chiaroscurali.

Impressione eccellente, dai toni intensi. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Ampi margini oltre la battuta del rame. Bibliografia: Paolo Arrigoni, Milano nelle vecchie stampe, 1970 (Album Esposizione di Belle Arti in Milano, a III-XI, 1839-51), 1970, 189/4.
