1963ref. 239921963. A 1963 U.S. Air Force and General Dynamics study addressing one of the fundamental hazards of early nuclear spaceflight: what would happen to an orbiting nuclear reactor and its fuel during an uncontrolled return through the Earth's atmosphere. Prepared by R. W. Andrews of the Advanced Technology Laboratory General Dynamics/Astronautics for the Air Force Weapons Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base the report develops scaling methods for modeling the heating structural failure and dispersal of nuclear fuel elements under reentry conditions. Its November 1963 date places the work during active American development of SNAP era space nuclear systems shortly before the 1965 launch of SNAP 10A the first U.S. nuclear reactor placed in orbit when the fate of reactor fuel during unsuccessful missions had become a defined aerospace safety problem. Andrews R. W. Re Entry and Disposal Phenomena for Nuclear Auxiliary Power Systems: The Scaling of Processes of Significance in the Re Entry of Nuclear Fuel Elements. Kirtland Air Force Base New Mexico: Research and Technology Division Air Force Systems Command Air Force Weapons Laboratory 1963. Technical Documentary Report RTD TDR 63 3002. Prepared under Contract No. AF29601 5893 by the Advanced Technology Laboratory General Dynamics/Astronautics San Diego California. 39 pages. 8.5 x 11 inches. The abstract states that the study formulates model scaling laws for physical phenomena associated with "re entry and dispersal of the debris from an orbiting nuclear reactor or power source" specifically addressing tumbling and free fall aerodynamic heating thermal stresses and temperature gas desorption and expansion in homogeneous solids. Andrews develops prototype scale trajectories for spheres and tumbling rods examines aerodynamic heating under hypersonic flight and ground test conditions and considers transient heating degassing and stresses produced in homogeneous materials. The publication review leaf bears manuscript approval signatures of project and USAF personnel while the foreword acknowledges discussions with specialists associated with General Dynamics/Astronautics and the Air Force program. This copy preserves extensive institutional use evidence: an "AEROTHERM LIBRARY" stamp "RECEIVED OCT 19 1966" stamp "KEEP PUNCHED" marking accession number 021594 project and task fields adhesive classification or routing labels and manuscript report numbers and shelf annotations across the front wrapper. The report belongs to the period in which American space nuclear engineering had to address not only reactor performance in orbit but the consequences of launch failure orbital decay and uncontrolled return through the atmosphere. Reentry engineering required proving through scaled ground tests that nuclear fuel elements robust enough for launch and operation would nevertheless heat fragment melt or disperse predictably during atmospheric return. Moderate toning and handling wear to wrappers with institutional stamps labels and manuscript markings as described; interior leaves generally clean with light age toning. Overall good condition. A technical record of the effort to make the destruction and atmospheric behavior of nuclear spacecraft components calculable before nuclear power systems entered operational use in orbit. unknown
1986ref. 91630New York: American Society of Civil Engineers 1986. Presumed First Edition First Printing. Trade paperback. Good. viii 302 2 pages. Figures. Formulae. Map. Tables. References. Ex-Library with the usual library markings. The report Uncertainty and Conservatism in the Seismic Analysis and Design of Nuclear Facilities published by the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE Working Group on Quantification of Uncertainties evaluates how safety margins and variability are calculated in nuclear plant engineering. It addresses the identification of conservatisms the quantification of safety unknowns and methods to balance structural reliability with realistic design responses. Key Evaluation Areas: Seismic Demand & Capacity: Assessing how ground motion variations and structural responses introduce safety gaps. Inelastic Energy Absorption: Accounting for the ability of structures to dissipate seismic energy safely beyond elastic limits. Risk and Fragility: Analyzing component failure probabilities to refine deterministic design rules into risk-informed practices. The American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE is a tax-exempt professional body founded in 1852 to represent members of the civil engineering profession worldwide. Headquartered in Reston Virginia it is the oldest national engineering society in the United States. Its constitution was based on the older Boston Society of Civil Engineers from 1848. ASCE is dedicated to the advancement of the science and profession of civil engineering and the enhancement of human welfare through the activities of society members. It has more than 143000 members in 177 countries. Its mission is to provide essential value to members their careers partners and the public; facilitate the advancement of technology; encourage and provide the tools for lifelong learning; promote professionalism and the profession; develop and support civil engineers. This work marks a new epoch in the understanding of the nature of nuclear physics. "After the discovery of thorium in 1900 new concepts of atomic structure followed from the brilliant experiments of Rutherford. A new theory of atomic disentegration was proposed then the nuclear nature of the atom. He discovered and named alpha and beta rays emitted from radioactive salts and predicted that disintegration of some radioactive elements would generate helium. he also produced in the laboratory the first artificial transmutation of one element into another." First printingof this milestone paper in which the strong nuclear forces are mentioned for the first time."It was only in 1921 that Chadwick had first shown that at very small distances the interactions of alpha particles with the atomic nucleus did not follow exactly the inverse square law predicted from the repulsion of their positive electrical scharges. Chadwick concluded that his experiments showed that these nuclear forces are of "very great intensity". According to Pais this is THE FIRST PUBLISHED STATEMENT ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF A STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE. This 'new force' interpretation was disputed untill well into 1920s."Hey & Walters."In any event Chadwick and Bieler's final conclusion avoid all reference to a possible electromagnetic cause for the deviations from the simple theory: "The present experiments do not seem to throw any light on the nature of the law of variation of the forces at the seat of an electric charge but merely show that the forces are of very great intensity. It is our task to find some field of force which will reproduce these effects." I consider this statement made in 1921 as marking the birth of the strong interaction."Pais in "Inward Bound" p. 240. unknown

1970ref. 237601970. Salem Nuclear Power Plant photo archive 1970s documenting the construction and interior control infrastructure of Public Service Electric and Gas Company's nuclear generating complex at Lower Alloways Creek New Jersey on the Delaware River. Contemporary press material dated July 23 1979 describes construction proceeding on a facility planned as the largest nuclear power plant east of the Mississippi River with two generating units nearing completion and a third in the planning stages. The photographs move between the enormous physical plant required to generate nuclear power and the enclosed control environment from which technicians monitored and operated its systems recording nuclear generation as an engineered network of reactor buildings instrumentation communications equipment operators and centralized oversight. Photo archive of six silver gelatin and color photographs ranging from approximately 5 x 7 to 8 x 10 inches Lower Alloways Creek New Jersey 1970s. Black and white exterior views show the Salem complex under construction along the Delaware River with massive domed reactor containment buildings rising amid cranes scaffolding temporary structures service buildings construction equipment utility poles and extensive surrounding works. The photographs record the scale of the site from elevated viewpoints placing the containment structures within the larger industrial landscape necessary to support them. The color photographs move inside the facility to a control room dominated by long banks of panels containing gauges indicator lights switches displays annunciators telephones and other monitoring and communications equipment. Operators sit at desks and consoles facing walls of instrumentation while another view looks along a control room wall equipped with additional panels and communications devices. A close photograph records a dedicated equipment cabinet containing dual reel to reel tape mechanisms speakers meters switches and related electronic controls showing another component of the communications and recording apparatus integrated into the room. One exterior press photograph retains a typed Associated Press caption identifying the site as the "Salem nuclear plant" at Lower Alloways Creek and stating that two generating units were nearing completion while a third remained planned. The archive records two sides of nuclear power construction that were normally separated in public views of generating stations with the monumental concrete and steel structures visible from outside and the dense instrumentation through which the completed plant would be supervised from within. The July 23 1979 press text explicitly frames Salem through scale describing three planned generating units and identifying the complex as the projected largest nuclear power plant east of the Mississippi River while the photographs establish the machinery of control behind that claim. Rows of gauges warning indicators communications equipment recording apparatus and operator stations show the process by which information from a sprawling generating complex was concentrated into a room where personnel could monitor plant conditions and respond through centralized controls. The exterior photographs establish the corresponding physical system with containment buildings surrounded by construction infrastructure and subsidiary facilities along the Delaware River. Light surface and handling wear occasional edge and corner creasing minor toning and scattered marks; press caption and editorial markings remain present on one verso. Overall good condition. A focused photographic record of the Salem Nuclear Power Plant as both a major 1970s construction project and a centralized technological system linking reactor infrastructure to the instruments and personnel charged with its operation. unknown

There will be an atomic conflagration and there is 'no hope for humanity in general' and 'whether we shall in fact be able to rebuild as rapidly as H. G. Wells suggested depends upon the magnitude of spiritual values to be found amongst us now'. The public are 'of an average mental age of 7-10 years'. 'Fortunately many died from privation and disease in the Second World War.' 'Organised Cooperation' 'group living group experience and unified essential Brotherhood' is a 'spiritual duty'. The pamphlet is underpinned by a section of 'Supporting Evidence'. Scarce: the only copies of this first edition on COPAC at the legal deposit libraries.
