First edition of this souvenir yearbook detailing the largest field trials held in the United States following World War II testing Army and Air Force personnel under conditions of simulated nuclear war even including the faked dropping of an atomic bomb. A number of experimental groups were introduced including a Sky Cavalry which combined the 82nd Airborne with a helicopter unit although there was controversy following the exercises with Armor wanting helicopters attached to mechanized cavalry units and Intelligence wanting aircraft with radar and infrared sensors. Unfortunately the massive maneuvers covering 45 days resulted in massive traffic jams with mechanized units trying to attack during torrential downpours and other logistics issues emerged which the US military attempted to correct when they later applied many of the results to new tactics during the Vietnam War. This report was to be published in teh Review of Modern Physics per cover. The APS Study Group found existing technology and straightforward extensions sufficient for managing nuclear wastes but unresolved economic institutional and political questions cloud the commercial use of plutonium. The study group consisted of a dozen physicists chemists engineers and geologists. Contents include: Summary of the Study; Introduction; Primer on the Fuel Cycle; LWR Fuel Cycle--Technology and Economics of Reprocessing and Recycle; LWR Fuel Cycle--Assessment of Radiation Exposures; LWR Fuel Cycle--Safeguards; High-Level and TRU Waste Management; Advanced Fuel Cycle Alternatives; Institutional and Organizational Issues of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Management Program and Appendixes. Utilization of nuclear fuels and management of nuclear wastes have become major topics of public discussion. Under the auspices of the American Physical Society this study was undertaken as an independent evaluation of technical issues in the use of fissionable materials in nuclear fuel cycles together with their principal economic environmental health and safety implications. Reprocessing and recycling in light water reactors were examined along with technical measures proposed as possible safeguards; advanced reactor fuel cycles were also studied for their resource and safeguards implications. Much of the work of the group centered on the principal alternatives for disposal of radioactive wastes and control of effluents. The group examined the research and development programs sponsored by government agencies along with associated relationships among agencies and between government and private industry. Available information was also considered on nuclear fuel resources and on important economic and environmental aspects of the various fuel cycles in order to strive for a balanced comparative study. The report presents many conclusions on various aspects of the nuclear fuel cycles and also provides recommendations concerning present utilization and future improvement of fuel cycle technology. The editor claims that the book is the first publication to explain nuclear power visually by using many photographic illustrations. Starting with nuclear weapons and their outcomes in war and radiation it then explores research on nuclear power for industrial usage. It also covers radio isotopes and their possible usage in medicine and other scientific areas. The last section features nuclear power developments in Britain Russia France and Japan. Every page is filled with numerous photographic illustrations with detailed captions. The majority of photographs were sourced from the United States. A comprehensive study on nuclear power and its potential as of 1955. . 朝日新聞社. [Asahi Shinbunsha]. hardcover
ref. A9780309303057Paperback / softback. New. The Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management's EM mission is the safe cleanup of sites associated with the government-led development of nuclear weapons and nuclear energy. While many of these legacy sites have completed cleanup the largest and most complex sites have not been fully remediated. The cleanup of these sites is proceeding under legally enforceable agreements with timelines for hundreds of milestones. EM is reviewing alternative approaches to increase effectiveness and improve cost efficiencies of its cleanup activities especially for sites that will have residual contamination when active cleanup is complete. This report is the summary of two workshops convened in October 2013 and January 2014 on best practices for risk-informed remedy selection closure and post-closure control of radioactive and chemically contaminated sites that present significant difficulty for remediation to unrestricted release. The workshop series aimed to explore best practices that promote effective risk-informed decision making and future opportunities to improve remediation approaches and practices. In the Workshop #1 section of Best Practices for Risk-Informed Decision Making Regarding Contaminated Sites the report examines holistic approaches for remediating sites with multiple contaminant sources and post-closure uses and approaches for incorporating a sustainability framework into decision making regarding site remediation closure and post-closure control. In Workshop #2 the report focuses on post-closure controls assessment of long-term performance of site remedies and best practices for risk-based remediation decisions. paperback
