Bound in publisher's tan cloth-backed brown paper boards with printed paper spine label; top edge gilt. Color frontispiece caricature of Thackeray and Dickens with tissue guard; illustrated throughout with photographs and facsimiles. Very good: spine mildly darkened with light soiling and minor wear to the label; corners lightly rubbed; contents clean and binding sound. No dust jacket. Signed by A. Edward Newton on the front flyleaf. The author's printed note on the Carlton Hotel slip is tipped in at page 268. Signed First Edition of A. Edward Newton's The Amenities of Book-Collecting and Kindred Affections Newton's classic of American bibliophilia — warm anecdotal essays on the rare-book trade in London and New York association copies Boswell Mrs. Thrale Lamb Wilde and the pleasures of the chase. Industrialist and collector he wrote as an enthusiast rather than a pedant and this 1918 first gathering made him a household name among book people. True firsts are identified by the famous Piccadilly/Pall Mall slip and the accompanying errata; unsigned examples in ordinary VG are common enough in the market but signed copies with the first-issue points remain the collector target. A desirable signed first for collectors of books about books Newton and early twentieth-century bibliophily. The Atlantic Monthly Press hardcover

On page 268 a printed note is attached with a safety pin. 'The Author has made a slip of the pen in locating the Carlton Hotel in Piccadilly and not on the corner of Pall Mall and the Haymarket. His attention has been called to it but he preferred to leave the blunder as it was - and is - as a sort of lightning rod for critics to divert their attention from - possibly - probably - more serious blunders.'
