ref. 26383England. Dating from at least between 1963 and 1975. The collection is in good condition on lightly aged and worn paper and can be grouped into three sections. ONE: Complete typewritten draft 3 44pp. 4to of Sussman's unpublished monograph on Bloch is contained in a large brown envelope with the following note by Sussman on the front: '2ND COPY without illustrations of "Ernest Bloch - Music's Prophet" JS'. It includes the contents list of illustrations introduction and two-page 'Key and Bibliography'. In seven chapters with titles including: '"Blochian" - The Hebraic idiom' 'The nationalist paradox' and 'Voice in the wilderness'. The monograph clearly went through a long process of revision and also present are a number of typescript drafts of various sections with extensive autograph emendations. These total 56pp. 4to with some sections disordered. TWO: Autograph 'Surrey County Council' notebook in Sussman's close handwriting and with extensive emendations is 93pp. 8vo with a further 45pp. 8vo loosely inserted. THREE: Approximately 70pp. 4to of miscellaneous autograph notes by Sussman mainly on traditional Jewish music together with four leaves torn from the 'Synagogue Review' November and June 1951. Sussman lived at 62 St Quintin Avenue London W10. There is no record of his having published any of his music criticism. In 1949 'The Gramophone' carried an advertisement in which he offered 'thorough tuition in Pianoforte playing and theoretical musical subjects'. England. L'intensità è quella di una fiamma ossidrica e dunque nel tempo, vita e scrittura intrecciandosi, hanno prodotto un attrito che ha portato Ernest in quella cantina, quella domenica, il 2 luglio 1961. Chiusura di una vita vissuta in continua iperbole. Larghissime le sue esperienze di uomo e artista. Un'espressione completa può essere rilevata nella traiettoria dei Quarantanove racconti che, scritti in tempi diversi, raccolgono le classiche esperienze e le passioni dello scrittore: la guerra, la caccia, la pesca, la corrida, una certa violenza connaturata e trasmessa. L'unità profonda e "fisica" fra la ricerca dello stile e il dolore per i destini dei suoi personaggi hanno prodotto un linguaggio narrativo che fanno di Ernest Hemingway un modello unico e imprescindibile del Novecento.
2017br. Ernst Fraenkel nacque nel 1898 da una famiglia della borghesia colta ebraico-tedesca. Inizialmente professò un marxismo eterodosso fino all'avvento del Terzo Reich, cui si oppose tanto nel suo ruolo ufficiale di avvocato lavorista, quanto e soprattutto pubblicando clandestinamente saggi e articoli che poi confluirono nel suo capolavoro "Il doppio Stato". Rifugiatosi negli Stati Uniti, scoprì gli aspetti positivi dell'«American way of life», aderendo pienamente ai princìpi della liberaldemocrazia pluralista e difendendoli fino alla morte, dopo il ritorno in patria, dagli attacchi dei contestatori sessantottini e dei loro "cattivi maestri", gli esponenti della Scuola di Francoforte. È considerato il più grande politologo tedesco del XX secolo. Dopo il crollo del Muro di Berlino e l'implosione dell'URSS la democrazia, apparentemente vincitrice del pluridecennale confronto e in espansione planetaria, ha in realtà conosciuto una profonda erosione dei propri contenuti e principi ispiratori; la ricostruzione critica della parabola umana e intellettuale percorsa da Fraenkel può forse rappresentare uno strumento di analisi utile a chi vuol comprendere i tempi di ferro e fuoco in cui viviamo.
