Sembra ormai accertato che la cultura architettonica attuale viva una situazione di crisi, anche se qualcuno preferisce dire di eterna avanguardia, che si manifesta attraverso una frammentazione dei risultati e un'estrema apertura interpretativa, il tutto governato dall'ossessione contemporanea per l'immagine e l'apparire. Una situazione che si rispecchia nel rapporto fra l'oggetto architettonico e il fruitore, in cui l'architettura non viene più vissuta bensì rapidamente consumata, secondo la logica dell'immagine-mercato, non molto diversa da quella che governa, ad esempio, la moda. La storia dell'architettura, che attraverso lo studio critico del passato dovrebbe fornire lo strumento operativo per agire nel presente, sembra dimenticata, in una sorta di amnesia collettiva di comodo. Dal canto suo la storiografia recente non reagisce a questo stato di cose, procedendo con un processo di omologazione tranquillizzante: meglio non riaprire i cassetti della memoria, meglio non evocare fantasmi. I sei saggi che formano questo libro si propongono, attraverso l'esercizio del dubbio, di scalfire alcune certezze che si vogliono acquisite, o meglio omologate, in particolare ma non solo nel settore delle attribuzioni. Una ricerca basata sul metodo, non per sostituire a quelle esistenti nuove certezze, bensì per aprire la strada ad alternative, in una storiografia delle possibilità, supportata da una diversa scientificità. Un viaggio nel tempo, fra passato e attualità, nella consapevolezza che la storia non possa identificarsi unicamente con il racconto dei vincitori, ma neppure con la sola apologia del presente.
