Dietro la parabola tragica di McTeague e della moglie, coppia corrosa da ingordigia, avarizia e sadomasochismo, si nasconde la volontà di raccontare l'orrore del quotidiano, la frustrazione del desiderio, la vanità del tutto. Invece di far sentire lo spettatore al centro del mondo, come farà di lì a poco la Hollywood roosveltiana, Stroheim esplora le potenzialità simboliche della profondità di campo, rielabora in modo personale le regole del montaggio analitico e costruisce inquadrature polisemiche, molto simili ai futuri «labiriniti senza centro» di Orson Welles. Alla luce dell'analisi filmica, integrata da un'interessante conversazione dell'autore con Michel Chion, si delineano dunque le forme di un realismo volto a restituire non solo l'immagine come pulsione, ma anche il tempo come durata. Durata che la ricostruzione filologica di Rick Schmidlin - a cui qui è dedicato un attento studio - ha cercato invano di ricomporre. La versione del film che è giunta fino a noi, consultabile nel DVD - allegato, ci permette comunque di cogliere - per usare le parole di Stroheim - «la vita vera con il suo lereiume, le sue oscurità, la sua violenza, la sua sensualità e, in singolare contrasto, anche la sua purezza».
