1970réf. 198741970. Twentieth Century Fox's Myra Breckinridge publicity archive 1970 documents the visual promotion of a major-studio film centered on a transgender woman gender nonconformity and attacks on Hollywood masculinity. Adapted from Gore Vidal's 1968 novel the film starred Raquel Welch as Myra Breckinridge with John Huston Mae West Rex Reed Farrah Fawcett and Roger Herren in supporting roles; AFI identifies the film's subjects as including bisexuality homosexuality lesbianism "sex change" Hollywood actors students seduction and gendered social conflict. The material belongs to LGBTQ film and New Hollywood publicity culture illustrating how a controversial commercial studio release used star image costume and provocative gender performance to market a film built around trans identity and the disruption of conventional sexual roles. The archive consists of four 1970 promotional items for Myra Breckinridge: three color lobby card photographs and one vintage glossy black-and-white silver gelatin publicity photograph. The large lobby card measures 11 x 14 inches; the two smaller lobby cards measure 8 x 10 inches; the silver gelatin photograph measures 8 x 10 inches. The lobby cards show scenes from the film featuring Welch and Huston including images of Welch in the white costumes closely associated with the character's stylized screen persona; all three lobby cards carry the film title the 20th Century Fox logo and a 1970 copyright statement in the lower white margin. The images foreground costume celebrity and theatrical confrontation rather than narrative continuity making the group especially useful for studying the marketing of gender transgression through Hollywood glamour camp visual codes and star publicity. 1 Twentieth Century Fox. Myra Breckinridge large lobby card. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century Fox 1970. Color promotional card 11 x 14 inches showing Raquel Welch in a scene from the film and retaining the printed studio and copyright information in the lower margin. 2 Twentieth Century Fox. Myra Breckinridge lobby card. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century Fox 1970. Color promotional card 8 x 10 inches featuring Welch and emphasizing the film's use of costume and pose in constructing Myra's public image. 3 Twentieth Century Fox. Myra Breckinridge lobby card. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century Fox 1970. Color promotional card 8 x 10 inches showing another publicity still from the film with printed title and studio branding. 4 Twentieth Century Fox. Myra Breckinridge silver gelatin publicity photograph. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century Fox 1970. Glossy black-and-white 8 x 10 inch still connected to the film's original publicity campaign. Minor edge wear and light handling to the lobby cards and photograph; images remain clean and legible; overall very good. Focused group of original publicity materials for a controversial LGBTQ film text whose mainstream studio circulation trans subject matter and highly stylized presentation of gender make it a significant artifact of 1970s queer film reception and visual culture. unknown books

1981réf. WALTER-FILM004146Vintage original second revision script by Gore Vidal adapted from the novel by Lucian Truscott USA. Los Angeles: Richard Roth Productions 6 March 1981. 11261 quarto brad bound in production wrappers. Paper filing label across spine NEAR FINE. Second revision draft script of this early form of an adaptation by Gore Vidal to television of Lucian Truscott's novel. In its present state the script would translate into a two-hour television film. Truscott's novel set at West Point at the time of the Vietnam War reportedly based it on fact. The completed film when screened on television dealt with homophobia both external and internalized and it was very strong stuff in the mid-1980s at the height of the Reagan era. The film was clearly troubling to some contemporary critics but it nonetheless was nominated for three Emmy Awards. A very interesting example of Vidal's work as a screenwriter especially because of the film's LGBTQ subject matter. Richard Roth Prod. paperback books

Edition of 250 numbered copies plus 26 lettered copies hors de commerce signed by the author. Gore Vidal 1925-2012 wrote a new introduction for this fiftieth anniversary edition of his first novel composed during World War II when he was a nineteen-year-old first mate on an Army supply ship in the Aleutians. The battles are far removed but nature becomes the enemy in the form of a storm at sea and the psychological subject is the tedium of waiting for the war to end. Reproduced are plans for the type of freight-supply ship Vidal was assigned to and that he used as the setting for the novel. The drawings were found by Hoyem with assistance from the San Francisco Maritime Museum and the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham Washington. They show the outboard profile deck plans for the navigation bridge and main- and below-deck arrangements. Stephanie Dal Porto who answered the Press's telephone was terribly worried that Gore Vidal would call from Italy and that she would impulsively imitate the voice of the comedienne Lily Tomlin playing a receptionist by responding: "Yes Mr. Veedle!" When he did call Hoyem answered and the author said that he had not replied to emails because his Internet connection and computer had been zapped by lightening. __POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Hebrew chronograms yield Jewish dates of publication 5499-5502. Brown library buckram scuffed at extremities spines lettered in gilt. Endleaves renewed. A good set. See foliation and condition notes for each volume below. Scarce eighteenth-century edition of this seminal compendium of Jewish law halakhah. Compiled between 1170 and 1180 while Maimonides was living in Egypt the Mishneh Torah is regarded as the author's magnum opus. It is the only Medieval-era work that surveys the full panoply of Jewish observance including those laws that are only applicable when the Jerusalem Temple is in existence. The present edition is the first to contain Judah Rosanes' commentary Mishneh le-melekh. "Mishneh Torah" The Repetition of the Law is an appellation originally applied to the biblical book of Deuteronomy; the subtitle "ha-Yad ha-Hazakah" The Book of the Strong Hand plays on its subdivision into fourteen books: the numerical value fourteen is represented in Hebrew letters as Yud 10 Dalet 4 which forms the word "yad" hand. Maimonides sought to provide a complete statement of the Oral Law so that a person who mastered first the Written Torah and then the Mishneh Torah would be in no need of any other book. Contemporary reaction was mixed with strong and immediate opposition focusing on the absence of sources and the belief that the work appeared to be intended to supersede study of the Talmud itself. Maimonides responded to these criticisms and the Mishneh Torah endures as an influential work in Jewish religious thought. According to several authorities a decision may not be rendered in opposition to a view of Maimonides even where he apparently militated against the sense of a Talmudic passage for in such cases the presumption was that the words of the Talmud were incorrectly interpreted. Likewise: One must follow Maimonides even when the latter opposed his teachers since he surely knew their views and if he decided against them he must have disapproved their interpretation. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death he is generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other works include "Kitab al-Siraj" a commentary on the Mishnah "Kitab al-Fara'I" a book on precepts and the celebrated philosophical work "Dalalat al-Ha'irin" known in Hebrew as the "Moreh Nevukhim" The Guide to the Perplexed. In this latter work Maimonides attempted a philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. Bi-defus Yisrael bar Avraham hardcover books
