Du big bang à l'homme, en passant par les premières cellules vivantes, cet ouvrage nous entraîne, avec une exceptionnelle clarté, à la découverte de grandes questions qui concernent autant la science que la religion (y compris celles des miracles ou du mal, à travers son expérience de la souffrance et de la mort avec des patients atteints de maladies génétiques). Malgré tous les troubles de nos comportements, l'existence de la moralité lui paraît être le signe distinctif montrant que l'homme, s'il est le produit de l'évolution, est néanmoins un être unique ayant une dimension spirituelle. Le livre vaut aussi par la description du parcours de son auteur, passé d'un athéisme virulent à une foi profonde au fur et à mesure de son action avec les malades et les mourants, mais aussi au cours de ses découvertes du génome humain, ce " langage de Dieu ", comme il l'appelle".
