Le docteur Thouret est né à Pont-l’Évêque en 1749 et mort à Meudon en 1810. Il travailla à la fin du XVIII e siècle avec son ami Fourcroy au rétablissement de la Faculté de médecine de Paris et à la propagation de la vaccine. Caillet 10676 consacre une très longue notice à cet ouvrage : « Ce livre de Thouret est plein d’érudition ; à tous les arguments invoqués par Mesmer il oppose les arguments semblables de tous les spaginistes ou des médecins alchimistes Libavius, Tentzelius, Wirdig, Maxwell, Kircher, etc. Il y a des textes d’une exactitude remarquable. Tout en discutant sérieusement, l’auteur n’en déduit pas moins que la doctrine de Mesmer n’est que pure illusion. Toutefois dit-il, ce qu’il offre de réel date de ses prédécesseurs…Les crises sont réelles, mais elles peuvent être dangereuses. Mesmer a bien prouvé l’existence du Magnétisme ; mais seulement sur des malades et non sur des corps inanimés ;..On voit que Thouret, si clair, si intelligent quand il s’agit de l’histoire du passé, hésite quand il faut expliquer les faits de son époque. Aussi son livre a-t-il obtenu un résultat tout autre que celui qu’il attendait.
