Book-label of professor Ralph H. Kellogg Very good. These two volumes cover research requested by NASA's Office of Advanced Research & Technology and the Space Science Board which in 1966 initiated studies of the physiological problems of manned space flight. The two-part study on respiratory physiology and circulatory physiology were done by a team of experts who wrote the report published here. Due to the complexity of problems relating to the unknown possible effects of prolonged space flight on the circulatory system these studies were vital to the success of NASA programs. / PROVENANCE: Ralph H. Kellogg 1920-2009 matriculated to the medical school at the University of Rochester then after WWII he taught at the Dept. of Physiology at Harvard Medical School taking his Ph.D. in 1953 then he joined UC Berkeley and then UCSF as Professor of Physiology where he worked for more than 50 years specializing in renal and respiratory physiology with particular attention to physiology of high altitude. "Facilities were primitive and they were subjects for their own experiments. Their measurements yielded additional information about the control of breathing that helps people adjust to the lack of oxygen pressure in the air. Very few physiologists in the world had laboratory facilities to work at such high altitude and Ralph came to know most of them." He also collected rare books on mountaineering clearly relating this interest to the study of high altitude conditions and the human experience. National Academy of Sciences, 1967-8. 1964ref. acs247Springfield Illinois: Charles C. Thomas 1964. Octavo blue cloth hardcover gilt lettering xxvii 124 pp. Fine in a Fine mylar protected dust jacket with “American Lecture Series.” From dust jacket: It is only possible to understand life in all its forms by understanding it at its origin and in its development. by studying and reproducing the processes by which it arose. In this classic monograph Doctor Oparin describes in as great detail as achievements of contemporary science will allow the three stages in the evolution of organic substances which preceded the appearance of life on Earth. The emergence of the most primitive organic compounds the hydrocarbons and cyanides and their nearest oxygen nitrogen sulphur and phosphorus derivatives with comparatively low molecular weights. Further elaboration of these compounds associated with a progressive increaase in the size of their molecules owing to the polymerisation and condensation of organic substances in the waters of the primaeval seas and oceans the primaeval nutrient broth. Formation within the hydrosphere of multimolecular systems which arise by the association of different high-molecular organic substances into supra-molecular complexes marked off from their environment by a definite boundary of separation but capable of reacting with it as an open system Charles C. Her temple on the Aventine Hill was a meeting place for skilled craftsman writers and actors. She is also depicted as a warrior a symbol appropriate for an organization created in the midst of the American Revolution. Around Minerva are representations of the new country—on her right a field of Indian corn a stand of oaks and the outline of a town; at her feet a hoe a plow and a sickle; on her left a quadrant and a telescope a ship heading for shore and the sun completely risen above the cloud. Over the whole is the motto SUB LIBERTATE FLORENT which suggests that arts and sciences flourish best in. -- 2 Rubber stamps discarded of the Linda Hall Library Kansas City MO. -- 3 Henry and Carol Faul.
