1886Best.-Nr. 013033Rochester NY: Charles A. Green 1886. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. Trade catalog featuring the Niagara White Grape of upstate NY from Rochester's purveyor of fruit farm garden and nursery plants and supplies. Catalog approx. 6x9" printed light green covers stapled spine.48 pages. Besides the Niagara species Green presents other aspects of grape culture. Lots of advertisements too. Nicest feature is a stunning full page chromolithograph of the featured grape. Covers moderately soiled. First page separated. Scarce. OCLC lists only titles of Green's Fruit Grower from 1906-17 and only one from an unidentified year in the late 1800's. We could find no fruit grower catalog dated 1886 for the grape. The Fruit Grower dedicates a page in this journal to how to order from the Niagara White Grape Co of Lockport NY and OCLC identfies only 1 copy of that firm's catalag on the subject. Charles A. Rabbi Jacob Salmon Raisin 1878 or 1877 - 1946 was the author of two works: The Haskalah Movement in Russia 1913 and Set Creed and Custom in Judaism. Haskalah "enlightenment " "education" from sekhel "intellect" "mind" the Jewish Enlightenment was a movement among European Jews in the late 18th century that advocated adopting enlightenment values pressing for better integration into European society and increasing education in secular studies Hebrew and Jewish history. Haskalah in this sense marked the beginning of the wider engagement of European Jews with the secular world resulting ultimately in the first Jewish political movements and the struggle for Jewish emancipation. The division of Ashkenazi Jewry into religious movements or denominations especially in North America and anglophone countries began historically as a reaction to Haskalah.
