Bibliography of King's publications. Synoptic Index. When Congress established the United States Geological Survey in 1878 it was King who was put in charge. King initiated the practice of using Hoffmann's contour lines to denote topography on maps and was among the first to make extensive use of the laboratory to solve geophysical problems. In addition to his many scientific contributions "from early youth King had shown literary qualities of a high order and it has always been a source of regret among his friends that he left so little evidence of it. A series of sketches appearing first in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY and afterward in book form under the caption of MOUNTAINEERING IN THE SIERRA NEVADA 1872 and his HELMET OF MAMBRINO in the form of a letter to his friend `Don Horacio' Horace F.
