1988ref. 33833Paul Aströms Förlag. Very Good. Softcover. Minor creasing to spine. Light shelfwear.; Skrifter Utgivna Av Svenska Institutet I Athen / Acta Instituti Atheniensis Regni Sueciae Series in 4° XXXVIII; 303 pages; The purpose of the Fifth International Symposium at the Swedish Institute at Athens the papers and discussions of which are contained in this volume was to initiate a discussion of the various phenomena characteristic of Greek cult practice of the pre-Hellenistic periods ranging from sacrifice and libations to the handling of cult images and the placing of votive gifts in a sanctuary. It was planned as a cross-discipline symposium so as to allow the problems to be addressed by scholars from diverging points of view by diverse methods and on the basis of the available evidence be it archaeological architectural iconographical literary or epigraphical. We also invited an anthropologist Professor W. Arens of the State University of New York at Stony Brook in order to put Greek cult practice in the more general perspective of cultural anthropology. These efforts notwithstanding it proved impossible to even touch upon all relevant aspects of the topic within the limited time of three days of sessions and a one day field-trip. The result was a concentration of papers and discussions on a few central phenomena such as animal sacrifice votive offerings and ritual meals and a number of single contributions dealing with a wide range of other aspects. It is our hope that the proceedings will inspire further research in this fascinating field. Robin Hägg . 1988. 9185086975 . Paul Aströms Förlag paperback

ref. 29301-Oxford University Press 2011-. First edition Oxford University Press 2011. x466 pages. Illustrated. Cloth. Near fine in dustjacket. During the Victorian era industrial and economic growth led to a phenomenal rise in productivity and invention. That spirit of creativity and ingenuity was reflected in the massive expansion in scope and complexity of many scientific disciplines during this time with subjects evolving rapidly and the creation of many new disciplines. The subject of mathematics was no exception and many of the advances made by mathematicians during the Victorian period are still familiar today; matrices vectors Boolean algebra histograms and standard deviation were just some of the innovations pioneered by these mathematicians. This book constitutes perhaps the first general survey of the mathematics of the Victorian period. It assembles in a single source research on the history of Victorian mathematics that would otherwise be out of the reach of the general reader. It charts the growth and institutional development of mathematics as a profession through the course of the 19th century in England Scotland Ireland and across the British Empire. It then focuses on developments in specific mathematical areas with chapters ranging from developments in pure mathematical topics such as geometry algebra and logic to Victorian work in the applied side of the subject including statistics calculating machines and astronomy. Along the way we encounter a host of mathematical scholars some very well known such as Charles Babbage James Clerk Maxwell Florence Nightingale and Lewis Carroll others largely forgotten but who all contributed to the development of Victorian mathematics.
