1937ref. 14666New York: Dodd Mead and Company. Good. 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket moderately worn copy half of ffep torn away light dampstain on rear cover spine turned front jacket text glued to front pastedown. Scarce crime novel in which a detective and an orchestra leader team up to solve the murder of a notorious gamber/gangster. "A vivid picture of New York after dark. Gangsters chorus girls and society looking for a thrill move through these pages adding color and character to a story that races along on a high note of exciting suspense." Touted on the jacket blurb as the author's "latest novel" omitting to mention that he had actually been dead for a couple of years since February 1935. This didn't seem to put much of a crimp in his output however this being the fifth of six novels to appear posthumously -- and the only one to bear his wife's name as co-author which would seem to imply that the others had already been finished at the time of his demise. . 1992ref. 219601992. Underground Music Indie Rock Zines Edited and largely written by Scott Rutherford the zine reflects a unique moment in American subcultural publishing when punk indie rock and vintage car culture collided in the DIY scene. Three issues of Speed Kills! a hybrid indie rock and automotive zine published in Chicago in the early 1990s. Each issue is a vivid chronicle of underground musical and visual culture with strong regional ties to Chicago and national relevance through its coverage of touring bands and scenes. The archive includes issues #2 Spring 1992 #5 and #7 all printed in black-and-white with screen-printed or offset color covers each approximately 8.5 x 11 inches. 1 Rutherford Scott ed. Speed Kills! No. 2. Chicago: Self-published 1992. This early issue includes coverage of the Richmond band Breadwinner East Coast drag racing the Australian noise-punk group Cosmic Psychos and a profile of Detroit drag legend Ed "Big Boss Man" Milhizer. As noted on the cover the zine delivers "Breadwinner! Unrest! Cosmic Psychos! Drag Racing! Lotsa Reviews!" The editorial notes refer to coverage from the "'92 Bedroom Nats" combining punk show reportage with drag strip atmosphere. The design incorporates full-bleed photo reproductions hand-lettering and found collage. 2 Rutherford Scott ed. Speed Kills! No. 5. Chicago: Self-published 1993. This issue includes a contributor list of more than two dozen names from the underground music and zine world including members of Gaunt Cherubs Pitchblende Don Caballero and Steadkaddy Six. The zine comes with a bonus 7" record featuring Gaunt and includes a faux-survey titled "Favorite Car Survey Yes." Interviewees include Merge Records co-founder Laura Ballance and record engineer Steve Albini who describes his favorite ride as "any van with over 250000 miles." One page advertises a music zine marketplace with the slogan "your needle is distorting sound by as much as 85%" blending fidelity humor with hardline DIY ethics. 3 Rutherford Scott ed. Speed Kills! No. 7. Chicago: Self-published 1994. Labeled the "Art & Science Special" this issue includes a piece titled "Futurism: Proto Punk" by Karen Pinkus linking early 20th-century Italian Futurism with the energy and aesthetic of punk rock. Includes contributions by indie rock standouts like Mac McCaughan Superchunk and Rachel Brook Flying Saucer Attack . A profile of the band Unwound is presented under the title "smashing the work ethic OR everyday is yesterday" while reviews cover artists including Don Caballero Cherubs and Labradford. The layout remains resolutely cut-and-paste incorporating xerox collage screen print textures and handwritten text. Speed Kills was a Chicago-based fanzine launched in 1991 by editor Scott Rutherford uniquely blending the worlds of underground indie rock and vintage drag racing culture. Emerging during a time when fanzines served as vital connectors within DIY music communities Speed Kills stood out by juxtaposing interviews and reviews of bands like Nirvana Pavement and Superchunk with in-depth features on 1960s drag racing legends and hot rod culture. Its pages often featured hand-screened covers vintage auto parts advertisements and detailed discussions on car mechanics reflecting a deep enthusiasm for both music and automotive subcultures. This fusion offered readers a tactile and immersive experience highlighting the shared spirit of creativity and rebellion in both scenes. Light toning to page edges. Minor staple rust and occasional handling creases. Covers bright and intact. Overall very good condition. Speed Kills! stands as a rare and distinctive zine that merged the grease-stained Americana of hot rod nostalgia with the avant-garde ethos of noise rock and punk embodying the collision of speed sound and subculture in the 1990s musical underground. unknown books

1914ref. 548772New York: The Knickerbocker Press 1914. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Octavo. 148pp. Frontispiece and 10 plates. Blue cloth binding titled in gilt. Partially unopened with just a hint of foxing and a few small nicks at the bottom edge of the front board and the foot of the spine very good. Inscribed by the author: "To Mrs. Emerson Compliments of Emma Langdon Roche." Roche born into a prominent Mobile Alabama family wrote this book the first to be based on interviews with Cudjoe Lewis also known as Kazoola a survivor of the Middle Passage as a captive on the last known slave ship Clotilda which a group of Americans used to illegally import slaves into Alabama in 1860 from present day Benin more than a half century after the suspension of the Atlantic slave trade. This book includes a photograph of Lewis and his wife Abache as well as drawings of Cudjo Abache and other survivors. This book was used by later researchers and writers as a resource about the residents of Africatown on the outskirts of Mobile and the history of the Clotilde. Zora Neale Hurston then a student of anthropology interviewed Cudjo Lewis and other Africans in Alabama as part of her research. She published an article in 1927 "Cudjo's Own Story of the Last African Slaver" purportedly based on her interviews with Lewis but later thought to be mostly derivative of Roche's text in Historic Sketches of the South. Exceptionally scarce source material and rarely found signed. The Knickerbocker Press hardcover books

1965ref. 171321965. African American Education 2 original press photographs related to integrating Little Rock Central High School and the University of Alabama. n.d. 1957 1965. Silver gelatin print photographs 8 x 10". Both images include original typed press captions printed in image margins. Little Rock photo shows NAACP leaders including Daisy Bates reacting to positive court news. Original press caption in part: "Negro Leaders Happy with Court Decision - Mrs. Daisy Bates left president of Arkansas chapter of the NAACP and Clarence Laws field secretary seem to be well satisfied with the ruling handed down today by the Supreme Court in which Little Rock's Central High School shall carry on immediate integration. The school is scheduled to open next Monday." Bates was an important figure in integrating schools and she hand-selected student called the Little Rock Nine who first integrated Central HS in 1957. Vivian Malone Jones was the first Black student to graduate from University of Alabama on May 30 1965. In the photograph she wears graduation cap and gown and smiles confidently at the viewer. Original press caption printed along right edge of image in part: "Vivian Malone is shown in her cap and gown that she will wear at the University of Alabama graduation May 30." Malone was one of the first two African American students at the University in 1963. Malone earned her first bachelor's degree at Alabama A&M a historically black university but the school lost its accreditation after she graduated. To get an accredited degree Malone applied to the University of Alabama's School of Commerce and Business Administration and won a lawsuit over the segregationist admission policies. Then-governor George Wallace turned this event into a national event when he blocked the judge's ruling and declared his famous slogan "Segregation Now Segregation Forever." National Guard troops were brought in to ensure Malone could attend the University. Little Rock photo has light creases along top edge and bottom right corner not affecting image. Both in very good condition. unknown books
1885ref. 140841885. Dome of the Rock interior nineteenth century records the exposed Foundation Stone at the center of one of Jerusalem's principal sacred monuments. Completed in 691-692 CE under the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik the Dome of the Rock stands on the Haram al-Sharif or Temple Mount a site central to Islamic and Jewish sacred traditions and also closely connected with Christian biblical history. The photograph preserves the relationship between the Rock itself and the architectural enclosure constructed around it more than a millennium earlier. Albumen print measuring 11" x 8.5" unmounted. The Foundation Stone occupies the foreground while columns arches and the decorated interior rise behind it. The surrounding colonnades are faced with marble in their lower sections with mosaic ornament above allowing the photograph to record both the irregular natural surface of the Rock and the elaborate architectural treatment of its enclosure. Jewish tradition associates the Temple Mount with the First and Second Temples and identifies the Rock with the site of the Holy of Holies; the Second Temple was destroyed by Roman forces under Titus in 70 CE. Islamic tradition connects the Rock with Muhammad's Night Journey and ascent to heaven while traditions associated with Abraham's attempted sacrifice also attach sacred meaning to the site. The Dome of the Rock occupies the Haram al-Sharif alongside the Al-Aqsa Mosque and other religious and educational buildings. Nineteenth century photographs of its interior recorded spaces that were considerably less accessible to many Western travelers than Jerusalem's exterior monuments while the albumen process circulated such views through the expanding photographic market for images of the Holy Land. Very good condition. A detailed nineteenth century interior view centered on the Foundation Stone and the marble and mosaic architectural decoration surrounding it. unknown books

In at least four cases the annotations in black request alterations to the text.
