Some cover spotting and wear mostly on and round backstrip which is otherwise sound. Spine lettering darkened. No jacket. Roche came from a prominent white femily in Mobile Alabama. The first part of this book is Roche's discussion of slavery and what she saw as Black inferiorioty. What makes this book special is that pages 65-148 focus on the Clotilde probably the last known American-owned slave ship which brought a cargo of African captives to Mobile Alabama in 1859 and the subsequent experiences and opinions of those captives based in part on Roche's interviews with Cudjoe Lewis also known as Kazoola and Poleete two of the African captives on the Clotilde. Portions of the Roche book appear almost word for word and sometimes word for word in Zora Neale Hurston's article "Cudjo's Own Study of the Last African Slaver" in The Journal of Negro History Vol. 12 No. 4 Oct. 1927 at pages 648-664. 1971réf. 43806Hull: Hull University 1971. First Edition. Very good. Original poster for an Afro Rock event at Hull University featuring one of the most important bands of the movement Assagai. Afro Rock which had its strongest incarnation in the UK in the late sixties and early seventies combined Western rock instrumentation with African and Afro-Cuban rhythms and percussion. Assagai featured emegrees from both South Africa and Nigeria as well a Ghana; the lineup included drummer Louis Moholo trumpeter/flautist Mongezi Feza alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana tenor saxophonist Bizo Mngqikana guitarist/bassist Fred Coker their chief songwriter and Terri Quaye - the first professional female congaist in the UK. Assagai issued just two highly-reguarded albums both in 1971 on Vertigo Records one of the few if not the only all-black band signed to that legendary rock label and this poster dates from that peak. While they broke up shortly after this gig the members went on to long careers in various other jazz and prog groups. A striking poster from this significant but poorly documented group. Poster silk-screened in blue gold and red. Mild wear creasing. Some rubbing. Else bright and sound. Very good. Hull University unknown books

1944réf. 40374London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd 1944. First edition. Softcover. g- to vg. Oblong octavo. Unpaginated. 48pp. Original illustrated wrappers and title page. "Those Three" Hitler Mussolini and Tojo is a splendid collection of 44 anti-Axis cartoons by Catalan artist Mario Hubert Armengol 1909-1995 published with a foreword by Catalan historian and founder of the Anglo-Catalan Society Dr Josep Maria Batista I Roca. In this work Armengol displays the bombed out German cities as chimney teeth and window eyes rugged against the sky. Mussolini is depicted as Hitler's puppet always taking orders from the Fuehrer. and always failing. Other cartoons show Pétain hunched in greatcoat and French military trousers with senile wrinkles and bedraggled moustache walking with the squinting squit-faced Laval in his jet black coat and pinstripes. Both clutch their coat flaps together against a cold wind as they stumble past the ruins of France. Behind them is an angry scowling Marianne. Her face is despair hardening into hatred and Laval and Pétain dare not look back at her. Mario Armengol's masterpiece though is "The Fakir wants Comfort." It shows Gandhi looking ambiguously at a bed of nails marked "Made in Japan" which has just been delivered by Japanese general and premier Tojo in uniform. Behind Gandhi is a clean white bed with bright white headboard marked "Made in England". The background is black but streaming down like stalactites of blood. It is of course an echo of the greatest of Britain's war-leaders Winston Churchill's famous description of Gandhi in 1930 as: posing as a fakir. striding half-naked. to parley on equal terms with the representative of the king-emperor. Wrappers partly rubbed and creased along edges. Pages slightly rippled throughout. Four pages disbound but present. Wrappers in overall good- interior in good to very good condition. George G. réf. 004228Paris. Faux Lacquer. Very Good Minus. Handsome folder promoting opium as a pharmaceutical! N.d. circa 1900 to 1910. 30 by 23 cm. Tabularly-presented text is on the endpapers with four leaves of heavy blank yellow paper bound in by string. On the two page table of particular interest in our view is the drug called "Pantopon 'Roche'" whose composition is "Opium Total". Other drugs we note contain "barbiturate." The opium-connection might explain the Chinoiserie decoration of the binder. Of course the boards are also very decorative making this binder a prized promotional giveaway which we assume it would have been to the company's customers and other contacts. The Basel-based Hoffmann La Roche was founded in 1896 and soon had offices in Paris. It remains to this day a pharmaceutical giant. Minor surface loss to the black faux lacquer surface along the edges. Ink and pencil marks abounding on the yellow blanks suggesting these were used as blotter paper. Minor loss and looseness to the endpaper at the spine. unknown books

Rock 1884-1962 was "captivated by the ritual books he found in the possession of the Naxi religious specialists the 'dongba' while plant hunting in China's borderlands. Rock went on to devote the remaining years of his life to the translation of these books that contained such a treasure house of knowledge a corpus of literature that for Rock offered tantalising glimpses at the indigenous religion of pre-Buddhist Tibet. Rock a voracious autodidact appreciated an intellectual challenge: this was a script that by the time he first encountered it in the 1920s nobody had previously deciphered aside from some exploratory incomplete translations conducted via Chinese by French scholars and explorers. This vast corpus of ritual literature was essentially unexplored territory and this was where Rock liked to tread. Through his assiduous collecting and cataloguing and not without controversy he preserved thousands of these texts in collections now spread throughout the western world . While Rock's first published translations were no more than concise summaries of the stories he discovered within the Naxi manuscripts he later developed a more extensive anthropological style of translation. This meant recording in exacting detail the phonetic reading given by a dongba and then embarking upon a full written commentary. The first translation to use this method was published in 1937 as 'The birth and origin of Dto-mba Shilo the founder of Mo-so shamanism according to Mo-so manuscripts' a seminal work on Dobbaq-sheel'lo the mythical founding father of the dongba religion" see Poupard D.J.
