1870rif. 2240150Philadelphia PA: Porter & Coates 1870. Hardcover. Good-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. F. O. C. Darley. See photos for condition details. Hardcover orange cloth boards show quite a bit of scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear spine is darkened and sunned. The internal binding of the text portion of the book is good but the hinges show thin cracking at both boards. The book also contains 19th-century library markings: the front pastedown contains a label stating it was presented to the St. Francis Xavier Library of Gettysburg by Anna Dill Gamble and her signature also appears on the title page. The first end page also has handwriting present one being an 1870 Christmas gift inscription with something erased above it and the rear pastedown as a label pasted in stating "this book must be returned". The title page also has a faint embossed round seal presumably naming the library. The exterior is the main reason for the low condition grade but the interior binding makes this a suitable reading copy as the pages are still securely attached with no tears. There is foxing and spotting present but mainly the pages are just toned due to age with the exception of the two frontis illustrations which are quite foxed due to reacting to the tissue guard. Anna Dill Gamble was internationally recognized as an advocate for world peace and active in the women's suffrage movement. After her death she was nominated as one of the most influential women leaders in York County's history. Porter & Coates hardcover

Daniel Roche born 1935 is a French social and cultural historian widely recognized as one of the foremost experts of his generation on the cultural history during the later years of the Ancien Régime. France in the Enlightenment is an examination of the social and cultural history of the Enlightenment in France. Roche explores of the changes that took place across French society during the 18th century as well as the forces that aided such changes. Roche argues that the 18th century was a complex period of progress. Central was the establishment of certain preconditions for the social transformation that took place during the Enlightenment specifically that criticisms of human behavior arose the symbols of monarchy were eroded and a space formed for political activity. By placing politics and material culture at the heart of historical change Roche captures the complexity and depth of the Enlightenment. From the finest detail to the widest view from the isolated event to the sweeping trend his masterly book offers an unparalleled picture of a society in motion flush with the transformation that will be its own demise. A panorama of a whole civilization a world on the verge of cataclysm unfolds in this magisterial work by the foremost historian of eighteenth-century France. Since Tocqueville's account of the Old Regime historians have struggled to understand the social cultural and political intricacies of this efflorescence of French society before the Revolution. France in the Enlightenment is a brilliant addition to this historical interest. France in the Enlightenment brings the Old Regime to life by showing how its institutions operated and how they were understood by the people who worked within them. Daniel Roche begins with a map of space and time depicting France as a mosaic of overlapping geographical units with people and goods traversing it to the rhythms of everyday life. He fills this frame with the patterns of rural life urban culture and government institutions. Here as never before we see the eighteenth-century French "culture of appearances": the organization of social life the diffusion of ideas the accoutrements of ordinary people in the folkways of ordinary living-their food and clothing living quarters reading material. Roche shows us the eighteenth-century France of the peasant the merchant the noble the King from Paris to the provinces from the public space to the private home. By placing politics and material culture at the heart of historical change Roche captures the complexity and depth of the Enlightenment. From the finest detail to the widest view from the isolated event to the sweeping trend his masterly book offers an unparalleled picture of a society in motion flush with the transformation that will be its own demise.
