1860rif. ABC_48873Bahia 1860. 8vo in 4s ca. 21.5 x 14 cm. Typographia de Camillo de Lellis Masson & C. Later half brown sheepskin spine with 2 red morocco title labels lettered in gold blue marbled paper sides brown and purple patterned endpapers. VIII 53 1 blank pp. Rare second edition of a pamphlet by the Brazilian lawyer and politician José Joaquim Landulfo da Rocha Medrado 1831-1860 published under his initials L. M. = Landulfo Medrado. According to the authors preface the first edition was not distributed to the public. In 1882 a third edition was published Bahia Imprensa Economica and in 1923 a fourth edition appeared Bahia Imprensa Oficial do Estado. In this pamphlet titled The courtiers and the Emperor's journey. Political essay on the situation Medrado offered a pointed critique of the Brazilian monarchy's tendency to adopt European courtly customs. He argued that these customs were ill-suited to Brazil's unique position as an American nation. Medrado believed that Brazil required a more democratic and parliamentary form of governance one that moved away from the concentration of power in the hands of the Emperor. Instead he advocated for a system where elected representatives would have a more prominent role in shaping the nation's future. This pamphlet reflects the broader political tensions of the time with liberals like Medrado pushing for reforms that would align Brazil's governance with its distinct identity rather than imitating European aristocratic traditions. In 1860 the Brazilian magazine Monarchia - Democracia issued a critique of the pamphlet arguing that the pamphlet's anonymous author avoids responsibility for promoting dangerous ideas that could destabilize Brazil. It defends the nation's democratic and monarchical institutions warning that the pamphlet's divisive ideas threaten Brazil's unity and future. With the large book plate of the Brazilian journalist Elysio de Carvalho 1880-1925 mounted on the front pastedown with a blue stamp in the bottom margin of the book plate "Y 4 120". Spine rubbed and slightly scratched the corners and edges of the boards show slight signs of wear the upper outer corner of the half title-page torn off and restored with paper slightly browned throughout with occasional foxing mainly in the first and last few leaves. Together these two series offer an unmatched panorama of American medallic sculpture in the twentieth century. Founded by the art writer Charles de Kay and the collector Robert Hewitt Jr. the Circle of Friends of the Medallion issued only twelve medals in its brief existence. Occurring however at a time when the Beaux-Arts movement had brought medallic art to a higher prominence among sculptors than it has enjoyed before or since the series is of great significance for the development of the American art medal. The Society of Medalists during its life of sixty-six years produced a much more extensive series: 128 regular issues one of which includes six separate pieces as well as four special issues designed for the Society and one other special issue of an already existing medal. This body of work showcases the development of diverse artistic styles among figurative sculptors of the twentieth century from classicism to modernism. The 123 sculptors whose work was presented in this series include almost every major American medalist of the era as well as several notable artists from other countries. In addition to cataloguing the issues of these two medallic art organizations this book features an innovative effort to record the different colors and patinas in which the medals were issued. Especially for the Society of Medalists whose long history meant that different production batches of a particular medal might have been made several decades apart this hitherto neglected dimension in the study of art medals shows how changes in the surface finish can yield truly startling variations in the visual impact of a design. . 2010. 0897223179 . These include private homes housing complexes corporate projects and public and urban projects. Rocha's design work is rigorous almost ascetic in nature: interior and exterior spaces flow into vertical and horizontal planes which intersect to create harmonious linear structures. Rocha's ability to combine modern architectural language with traditional materials such as wood and visible stone textures enables him to create buildings which are clearly modern but speak to the past and their surroundings. . 2003. 8884911133 . Adams depicts idealized landscapes that evoke virgin terrain untouched by human intervention and devoid of degradation. Through her reworking of landscape traditions and conventions her paintings reveal the inextricable connections between beauty and the sublime and melancholia. Her paintings evoke the deep desire for the perfect moment and heighten awareness of the psychological impact of the idealized landscape. Adams presents the landscape as a solitary experience with the immense and infinite sublime-a magnificent solitude. Where Earth Meets Sky is the first museum survey exhibition of Victoria Adam's work and is part of the Tacoma Art Museum's Northwest Perspective Series. Adams' work is held in private and museum collections throughout the United States. Rock Hushka is Tacoma Art Museum's curator of contemporary and Northwest art. . 2010. 0924335300 . Museum paperback

A "phantasmagoria" was a pre-cinematic theatrical show devised in France in the late eighteenth century which gained popularity throughout Europe in the nineteenth century. Long before blockbuster art exhibitions crowds were wowed by these traveling shows in which stories were performed with magic lanterns and rear projections that created dancing shadows and frightening melodramatic effects. These lively interactive events incorporated narrative mythology and theater in a single art form; they entertained a wide audience and provided a space to consider the otherworldly mobilizing viewers' anxieties regarding death and the afterlife. This catalogue produced for the traveling exhibition of the same name includes a text by curator Jose Roca and his interviews with the 12 artists as well as a newly commissioned short-fiction piece by Bruce Sterling. The exhibition is co-organized by the Museo de Arte del Banco de la Republica Bogota Columbia. . 2007. 091636576X . Independent Curators International hardcover

Through almost 800 images Cityscapes tells the story of the city from its origins in the early seventeenth century through the end of the twentieth century. In lithographs paintings drawings and broadsides New York is portrayed as rising from a small Dutch outpost to a republican seaport whose life was framed by the American Revolution. The visual evidence changes to etchings photographs and lithographs as Cityscapes depicts a mid-nineteenth-century city torn by dislocations caused by a multiethnic society amid the turmoil of the industrial revolution. Documenting the turn of the last century a wealth of photographs shows the new five-borough metropolis taking in waves of immigrants and portrays the evolution of the immigrant metropolis into the cosmopolitan city of mid-century. In its final chapter Cityscapes looks at the global village and takes stock of New York´s role as the world economic and artistic capital of the late twentieth century. This lavish volume shows how New York produced contemporary understandings of what makes a city from a distinctive skyline to a democratic street grid to diverse ethnic neighborhoods. From the depths of poverty to the heights of conspicuous consumption images of New York illustrate how we comprehend the urban past and imagine its future. . 2001. 0231106246 .
