Pencil marginalia throughout otherwise an excellent copy. 2012 Trade Paperback. x 198 pp. In a world where the value of a liberal arts education is no longer taken for granted Mark William Roche lucidly and passionately argues for its essential importance. Drawing on more than thirty years of experience in higher education as a student faculty member and administrator Roche deftly connects the broad theoretical perspective of educators to the practical needs and questions of students and their parents. Roche develops three overlapping arguments for a strong liberal arts education: first the intrinsic value of learning for its own sake including exploration of the profound questions that give meaning to life; second the cultivation of intellectual virtues necessary for success beyond the academy; and third the formative influence of the liberal arts on character and on the development of a sense of higher purpose and vocation. Together with his exploration of these three values―intrinsic practical and idealistic―Roche reflects on ways to integrate them interweaving empirical data with personal experience. Why Choose the Liberal Arts is an accessible and thought-provoking work of interest to students parents and administrators. University of Notre Dame Press paperback books

To him through the mail comes a letter from the gold-digger district of New York saying that the writer is a young woman who will if he advances to her $25000.00 guarantee to marry a millionaire and become an established member of society within two years. He tears up the letter with a weary smile but the nerve of the girl intrigues him and almost against his will he calls upon her at her one room apartment in a west side hotel. She proves to be a decent and respectable young woman apparently well born with great beauty and charm but she is so clear so definite so cold-blooded in her plan that it appeals to his sporting instinct to treat the matter like a bet on a race course. He turns over the money to her with the distinct understanding that she is in now way to give him any quid pro quo - and then you are started on a most amusing story the outcome of which is too good to tell. Suffice it to say that the girl makes good in the two years by methods open to anyone without either any great stroke of luck or any improbable action. And the quid pro quo - well - ! Some cover spotting and wear mostly on and round backstrip which is otherwise sound. Spine lettering darkened. No jacket. Roche came from a prominent white femily in Mobile Alabama. The first part of this book is Roche's discussion of slavery and what she saw as Black inferiorioty. What makes this book special is that pages 65-148 focus on the Clotilde probably the last known American-owned slave ship which brought a cargo of African captives to Mobile Alabama in 1859 and the subsequent experiences and opinions of those captives based in part on Roche's interviews with Cudjoe Lewis also known as Kazoola and Poleete two of the African captives on the Clotilde. Portions of the Roche book appear almost word for word and sometimes word for word in Zora Neale Hurston's article "Cudjo's Own Study of the Last African Slaver" in The Journal of Negro History Vol. 12 No. 4 Oct. 1927 at pages 648-664. 1944réf. 40374London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd 1944. First edition. Softcover. g- to vg. Oblong octavo. Unpaginated. 48pp. Original illustrated wrappers and title page. "Those Three" Hitler Mussolini and Tojo is a splendid collection of 44 anti-Axis cartoons by Catalan artist Mario Hubert Armengol 1909-1995 published with a foreword by Catalan historian and founder of the Anglo-Catalan Society Dr Josep Maria Batista I Roca. In this work Armengol displays the bombed out German cities as chimney teeth and window eyes rugged against the sky. Mussolini is depicted as Hitler's puppet always taking orders from the Fuehrer. and always failing. Other cartoons show Pétain hunched in greatcoat and French military trousers with senile wrinkles and bedraggled moustache walking with the squinting squit-faced Laval in his jet black coat and pinstripes. Both clutch their coat flaps together against a cold wind as they stumble past the ruins of France. Behind them is an angry scowling Marianne. Her face is despair hardening into hatred and Laval and Pétain dare not look back at her. Mario Armengol's masterpiece though is "The Fakir wants Comfort." It shows Gandhi looking ambiguously at a bed of nails marked "Made in Japan" which has just been delivered by Japanese general and premier Tojo in uniform. Behind Gandhi is a clean white bed with bright white headboard marked "Made in England". The background is black but streaming down like stalactites of blood. It is of course an echo of the greatest of Britain's war-leaders Winston Churchill's famous description of Gandhi in 1930 as: posing as a fakir. striding half-naked. to parley on equal terms with the representative of the king-emperor. Wrappers partly rubbed and creased along edges. Pages slightly rippled throughout. Four pages disbound but present. Wrappers in overall good- interior in good to very good condition. George G.
