1971ref. 43806Hull: Hull University 1971. First Edition. Very good. Original poster for an Afro Rock event at Hull University featuring one of the most important bands of the movement Assagai. Afro Rock which had its strongest incarnation in the UK in the late sixties and early seventies combined Western rock instrumentation with African and Afro-Cuban rhythms and percussion. Assagai featured emegrees from both South Africa and Nigeria as well a Ghana; the lineup included drummer Louis Moholo trumpeter/flautist Mongezi Feza alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana tenor saxophonist Bizo Mngqikana guitarist/bassist Fred Coker their chief songwriter and Terri Quaye - the first professional female congaist in the UK. Assagai issued just two highly-reguarded albums both in 1971 on Vertigo Records one of the few if not the only all-black band signed to that legendary rock label and this poster dates from that peak. While they broke up shortly after this gig the members went on to long careers in various other jazz and prog groups. A striking poster from this significant but poorly documented group. Poster silk-screened in blue gold and red. Mild wear creasing. Some rubbing. Else bright and sound. Very good. Hull University unknown books

Light toning light edgewear to wrappers light soiling to exterior brief annotations and ink marks to front wrapper pencil marks to several pages of text. A very good copy. $150. A scarce survivor from the late-Victorian book trade this catalogue No. L represents the specialized stock of James Roche an established bookseller operating from 1 Southampton Row Holborn a premier location near the British Museum. Roche was a noted specialist in Standard Library Editions and the "Distinguished Provenance" cited-including the libraries of Judges Barons and Earls-reflects the significant liquidation of landed estate libraries during the Great Agricultural Depression of the 1880s. Printed by Bowden Hudson & Co. a firm known for high-quality bibliographic work the catalogue's emphasis on "Low Prices For Cash" highlights Roche's role in the 19th-century "Discount Bookseller" movement which disrupted traditional long-credit systems in favor of immediate liquidity. Roche's catalogues are historically significant for tracking the dispersal of aristocratic collections. 1969ref. 55917New York: Vantage Press 1969. First edition. Very good plus in a very good jacket. Garrulously inscribed first edition of this scarce self-published first-person account of life on the road with the Chicago Outlaws. Unassuming factory worker George "Rock Conte" Mitchell falls in with the notorious Chicago Outlaws seemingly out of nothing but curiosity: "I had never met or encountered anything which split my imagination as this group did." He published this account with Vantage Press at his own expense reporting credulously and forgivingly on the gang "many of the stunts they pulled off just didn't seem to make any sense . I had seen only one member smoke marijuana" some of whom were also seen and heard from in Danny Lyon's THE BIKERIDERS. Inscribing the book six years after publication Conte echoes the also presumably self-penned jacket copy in comparing his mission to that of John Howard Griffin in BLACK LIKE ME but OUTLAWS FOREVER brought no publicity to the divide between the straight world and that of the riders. Perhaps because HELL'S ANGELS had already claimed it all for Hunter S. Thompson several years before. OCLC locates just six scattered holdings. 8'' x 5.5''. Original black cloth boards silver stamped spine. In original unclipped $4.50 pictorial jacket. 8 pages of black-and-white photographs. 216 pages. Inscribed to front free endpaper: "To / Rob & Sue: / I feel like 'John / Howard Griffin' author of / 'Black Like Me'. There is / always another side to a story. / Sometimes one may pay a / dear price & suffer but one / should never give up. / I wish the two of you the best of everything and hope / your dearest dreams come true. / Sincerely Your friend / Always / Rock Conte / 5-24th-75." Jacket lightly toned with minor soil and few small chips. Faint toning to text block. Bit of pushing to spine tail. Overall sound and clean. Vantage Press unknown books
