1910ref. 2210038n.p.: n.p. 1910. Soft cover. Near Fine. This real photo post card RPPC of an unidentified mounted cowboy has a classic look it to it and he is well appointed as is his horse. This is a generic divided back post card with no stamp block. On the back of the card hand-printed in pencil is a family name we can't quite make sense of plus a bit of other information: FAMILY / EAGLE RIVER / WI / CIRCA 1910 / PHOTO FROM WEST" We presume from the modern abbreviation of Wisconsin that it is a modern description by someone who knew the family or in some was connected. Eagle River is up in the Northwoods not far from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Slight toning on the back and the photo is quite sharp and correctly exposed. We are providing a close-up of the revolver and holster. We think we know the maker of the firearm but not being experts in this will refrain from saying. There will likely be plenty of lookers who can identify it. Although this card is unstamped and therefore unmailed it could be that it was mailed in an envelope to folks back home who would be impressed with him. "Doesn't our boy look like a real cowboy" Perhaps he indeed was! n.p. unknown

1860pp. xvi, 423 + Frontis. Slight foxing. 12mo. 19 cm. Original full cloth binding. Engraved ExLibris of George Dawson Coleman. Very good. This first American edition of the first of what eventually became four series. It includes Buckland's popular essays on: 'A Hunt in a Horse-pond; 'Rats'; 'The Cobra di Capello'; 'Fish and Fishing'; and 'My Monkey Jacko.' Known as the People's Naturalist, Buckland was trained as a medical doctor but spent a great part of his time as a fisherman, antiquary, and naturalist. In 1867 he was appointed to the congenial post of Inspector of the Salmon Fisheries. "Genial, sagacious, enthusiastic, always prone to look at the humorous side of his subject, Buckland aimed rather at enlisting the sympathies of others in his favourite studies than at acquiring the name of a profound writer on science. He held the ordinary usages of society in supreme contempt when they appeared to interfere with his zeal for experiment and research in natural history. His friends love to recall him - now wading into some icy cold river to capture salmon for the purposes of artificial breeding - now smoking and in his shirt sleeves as he arranged curiosities at South Kensington - and now again humorously dilating in his house in Albany street about the habits of the pet animals which generally ran loose through his rooms" - From the 'Dictionary of National Biography' Scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!
