ABOUT THIS BOOK: One of America's most innovative artists Romare Bearden 1911-1988 made colorful and passionate images that reflected his life in a time of creative ferment. His influences ranged from the old masters to African art as well as the world around him: popular religion and ritual jazz clubs and brothels the history and literature of his time and the places he lived the rural South Pittsburgh and Harlem the Caribbean island of St. Martin. The resulting images are fresh and evocative filled with quirky details and rhythmic forms. This authoritative and beautiful book which accompanies a major retrospective opening at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. provides a provocative and absorbing look at a beloved artist. The Art of Romare Bearden showcases compelling examples of his pioneering work: complex collages and photostats; watercolors gouaches and oils; little-known landscapes; his only known sculpture; costume designs; and book illustrations. In a career that spanned much of the twentieth century Hungarian-born photographer Andre Kertesz 1894-1985 created deceptively simple yet compelling and poetic photographs. This book presents approximately 120 of these striking images as well as previously unpublished archival material that sheds important light on the artist and his work. Like the exhibition it accompanies "Andre Kertesz" takes us through Kertesz's years in Budapest Paris and New York. Unlike other works on Kertesz it presents only vintage prints and includes several seldom seen photographs from throughout his career. Written by renowned art historian Sarah Greenough and Kertesz Foundation curator Robert Gurbo "Andre Kertesz" includes excerpts from the photographer's previously unexamined journals and correspondence - documents that prompted the authors to reexamine every period of Kertesz's life and work. They reflect on their findings in essays covering each of the major phases in Kertesz's career. While the book includes examples of the artist's most important photographs including Chez Mondrian The Satiric Dancer and The Eiffel Tower it also focuses on the intensely autobiographical nature of his work. It elegantly demonstrates the ways in which Kertesz injected his persona both literally and metaphorically into his work. Accompanying the book's essays and exquisite tritone reproductions of his photographs are an illustrated chronology that corrects many previous errors a comprehensive bibliography and selections of previously unpublished writings by the photographer. A matte softcover book with white text on a red spine and a black-and-white pictorial front cover. xiv 302 pages; profusely illustrated in black-and-white. "Andre Kertesz 1894-1985 is one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century. In a career that spanned more than seventy years he made some of the most deceptively simple yet compelling photographs ever created. He sought to capture the poetry of modern urban life revealing its quiet incidents and odd occasional comic even bizarre juxtapositions. This book chronicles his art from his first works taken in his native Hungary just shortly before World War I to his highly celebrated photographs of Paris in the 1920s and 1930s and his studies of New York from the late 1930s to the early 1980s. Greenough and her colleagues have examined the extensive archive of diaries letters date books clippings and other memorabilia preserved by the artist himself. In their essays and an illustrated chronology they provide new insights into the development of Kertesz's life and art and its significance for twentieth-century photography. This book includes more than 250 reproductions and numerous excerpts from the photographer's previously unpublished correspondence and diaries." National Gallery of Art paperback books
