1810réf. 146931810. Arabian and Turkish Horses printed in Prague in 1810 presents two regional horse types within the European visual culture of natural history and comparative animal classification. Issued as part of Westasiatische Thiere or "West Asian Animals" the engraving distinguishes Arabian and Turkish horses through bodily form movement coloring and the dress of their handlers. The plate supports study of early nineteenth-century European representations of Middle Eastern equestrian culture animal breeding regional identity and the use of human costume to establish geographic context in zoological illustration. Das Arabische Pferd and Das Türkische Pferd. Prague 1810. Engraved plate from Westasiatische Thiere. Approximately 7 × 10 inches. The sheet contains two horizontally arranged scenes. Above beneath the caption "Das Arabische Pferd" a turbaned handler controls the reins of two animated black-and-white horses shown lifting their forelegs and turning toward one another. Below "Das Türkische Pferd" depicts a second turbaned figure in boots leading two more heavily built dappled horses. All four animals are shown intact and presented in profile or near-profile allowing comparison of their proportions musculature coats and carriage. The contrasting poses differentiate the lively movement assigned to the Arabian pair from the steadier stance of the Turkish horses. The plate uses regional labels and costume to organize equine varieties for a German-speaking European audience combining zoological comparison with generalized representations of Middle Eastern appearance. Its imagery is therefore relevant not only to the history of horses but also to the ways European publishers classified animals and peoples through geographic typologies. No tears losses or significant staining are reported with only minor evidence of age and handling. Very good. A visually detailed comparative plate connecting Arabian and Turkish horse culture with the classificatory conventions of early nineteenth-century illustrated publishing. unknown books
