As an ornithologist he was a founder member of Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust SBBOT and was responsible for establishing a nature reserve at Gazen Salts. He contributed hundreds of b/w vignettes of birds to various British regional bird reports; his illustration of a Kentish Plover graced the front cover of the Kent Bird Report in the 1950's and 1960's but his principal contribution in this field was the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Report which from 1960s through to 2000 featured hundreds of his highly accomplished drawings of birds He is best known as a founder-member of The Society of Wildlife Artists SWLA along-side Talbot Kelly Eric Ennion Robert Gillmor Peter Scott and many more. The SWLA inaugural Exhibition held 13th - 27th August 1964 at the Galleries of the Federation of British Artists Pall Mall featured Harles works. In fact the first listed work in the catalogue is Harle's "Whitefronts Crossing the Dunes" and goes on to feature a further three paintings. Then these three were exhibited at Nature in Art in 2003 celebrating the 40th year since the inaugural exhibition of the SWLA. He contributed a coloured frontispiece and line drawings for The Birds of Kent: a review of their status and distribution. . unknown
