1873réf. 17107Washington DC: GPO 1873. First Edition. Original three quarter roan. Good; some dust soiling and occasional spotting; front cover loose; small release stamp on a blank portion of the title but no other accessioning marks. 4to 28 pp. 22 mounted full page albumen photographs by Gutekunst In 1869 an Ecuadoran doctor named Casares administered the extract of the Cundurango plant to a dying cancer patient. The result was a 'cure'. Other cases were treated and the new cure was brought to the attention of the American Secretary of State. Through that office the Surgeon-General William Wood was informed and immediately dispatched J G Ayers to collect samples of the plant. The official expedition to collect samples arrived at Guayaquil in August 1871 it is interesting to note that it was preceded by a Dr Keene who was already deep in the bush collecting samples of the plant. Later that month Ayers was in the village of Malacatos where most of the samples were collected. By late September he was back aboard ship headed home with samples of 9 distinct species. The report offered here examines and illustrates the various species. Joseph Carson Prof. of Materia Medica at the Univ. of PA was called upon to assist in the botanical examination of the plant samples. GPO unknown books

1936réf. 8081Salisbury UK: Not published 1936. Unique. Contemporary three-quarter gilt stamped leather. Fine; some rubbing to the binding. Folio measuring about 21 x 13 inches. There are 205 full page mounted specimens and mounted photographs etc. A massive folio volume of mounted specimens of British grasses representing a life-time of work. The botanist/collector was H Goddard who was a well known authority on British flora in general and grasses in particular. He was the staff botanist for the firm of Dunns Farm Seeds in Salisbury. In 1936 after 50 years of collecting he presented the collection to the firm. They had it bound with introductory letter press. This is the folio volume being offered here. The preliminaries of the volume contain photos and mounted press clippings from which is derived the following: ' A collection of British grasses believed to be without equal . It took most of his life to get it together and two years ago it was put into a bound volume . and presented to the firm. A preface to it was written by Prof. R G Stapleton director of the Welsh plant breeding station and one of the world's authorities on grasses who pays it and the author a high tribute. He says" . in Mr. Goddard's collection they have a valuable possession which will stand for all time . the specimens are beautifully set-up correctly named and well arranged. Indeed it is such that could have only been brought together by a botanist of long experience and by one with infinite patience and with a deep feeling for the beauties of nature." Apart from some minor scuffing the volume is in fine condition with impeccably preserved specimens in tact. Each specimen has the common name genus species place and date collected noted on the mount. A superb and fascinating monument to scholarship science and natural beauty. Not published hardcover books
1824réf. 71329Parisiis Paris: Treuttel et Würtz 1824. First edition. Leather Bound. Very Good. Octavo 21 cm 1/4 green leather with bluish-green and black speckled paper over boards. On spines in gilt: "A. De Candolle. Prodromus." Extremities rubbed to varying degrees. "Conservatoire Botanique Ville de Genève" ink stamp on the title pages. Pages lightly foxed however occasionally the foxing is more pronounced. Periodic neat brief contemporary markings and manuscript notations in the text of the first half of the volumes these markings are quite unobtrusive consist primarily of x's or dashes and do not distract from the text. Markings most abundant in volumes 1 and 2. Marks all but completely disappear in the second half of the volumes. Stitching visible in the inside margins every now and then. Very infrequent staining to the pages. Pp. 85-92 in volume 3 are hanging on by a thread. Else bindings very tight and sturdy. With indexes at the rear of each volume but not containing the index that was issued in 1874. Known as "The Prodromus" this is Candolle's monumental descriptive classification of all heretofore known seed plants. Augustin Pyramus de Candolle prepared the first seven volumes of "Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis" with his son Alphonso completing the work with the help of various authors. Swiss botanist Augustin Pyramus de Candolle 1778-1841 is often described as one the greatest Swiss botanists of the early nineteenth-century. He is known for establishing scientific structural criteria for determining natural relations among plant genera. After Charles Darwin introduced the principles of organic evolution Candolle's criteria furnished the empirical foundation for a modern evolutionary history of plants. In his writings he argued that plant anatomy not physiology must be the only basis of classification for which he coined the term taxonomy. In addition to being credited with supplanting Linnaean classification Candolle is also remembered for pioneering the study of phytogeography the biogeography of plants. 1534réf. 2839WITH MANUSCRIPT ANNOTATIONS IN PORTUGUESE MENTIONING BRAZIL 8vo 14.4 x 9.6 cm 180 ff. with 151 large woodcut illustrations of which 149 are of plants. Bound somewhat tightly in later vellum over boards covers gilt-ruled spine gilt with morocco title pieces a.e.g. Some marginalia cropped at time of re-binding as well as 2 pages of manuscript annotations in Portuguese. Minor tear repaired at edge of title just touching woodcut border; some minor soiling but generally a fresh copy with dark strikes of the woodcuts. Rare second Italian-language edition first 1522 of the Herbarius latinus important for the dissemination of botanical/medical knowledge in popular culture and particularly for the adoption of this originally German-printed Latin work for readers in the Veneto. The second section with 96 chapters includes information on laxatives aromatics fruits seeds gums and resins salts minerals goose-grease cheese honey ivory and much more. Anderson notes that this section probably contributed to the book's success: "It was concerned with the materials of medicine that were commonly available in the shops of apothecaries and spice merchants. Through the use of the Herbarius the average man could easily find what drugs to use and purchase them in most towns." According to Anderson "the Herbarius sold as well in Italy if not better. There its second section may have contributed to its success for it was concerned with the materials of medicine that were commonly available in the shops of apothecaries and spice merchants. Through the use of the Herbarius the average man could easily find what drugs to use and purchase them in most towns. The second section has 96 chapters though many of them are very brief. They deal with the following: laxatives; aromatics; fruits seeds and plants of garden and orchard; gums and resins; salts; minerals and stones; and a variety of animals and their products such as goose-grease cheese honey and ivory" Anderson Illustrated History of the Herbal pp. 86-7. The last chapter CLI de Vino e Aceto is illustrated with a woodcut showing wine barels in a cellar. According to Hunt the woodcut on the title-page showing Saints Cosmos and Damian appears here for the first time. Our copy has 2 full page and numerious marginal early 17th c. annotations in Portuguese mentioning Brazil in one case and giving the date of 1630 in another. There are two mentions of experiments in planting and cultivating cotton and ginger "brought from Brazil"--one of them dated 1643 f. aa6 r and f. Y6 r. In 1577 the Portuguese prohibited the cultivation of ginger in Bahia due to their interests in the India trade. However Bahian colonists ignored the law and continued to grow it selling it in secret to the Dutch and the English among others. The use of lead for treating bladder ulcers is also discussed f. Y6 r. Most curious is a recipe for avoiding and curing hemorroids by "Father Manoel da Anunciação Capuchino in the year 1630". The recipe involves frying small frogs in oil without salt "until the oil stops making noise. Once they are fried take them out of the oil and put the oil in a bottle and apply this liquid with your fingers on the bone and on the hemmorhoids and they will heal quickly" f. Y6 v. A Large Paper Copy. Cleveland Collections 557; Dunthorne 6; Sitwell "Great Flower Books" p. 67 69; Nissen BBI 18. ◆One plate with minor repair to fore-edge margin another with tiny rust hole not touching image half a dozen plates with insignificant smudges made during the printing process other trivial imperfections but A VERY FINE COPY clean fresh and wide-margined in a flawless binding. This is a major work of 18th century botany describing more than 2800 species of plants found in Italy's Piedmont region illustrating 237 previously unknown specimens and--crucially--classifying them all according to the new Linnean system becoming one of the first regional botanicals to use that taxonomy; as a bonus our copy comes in a particularly appropriate and charming binding with prominent botanical design elements. "Flora Pedemontana" was the chief work of Italian physician Carlo Allioni 1728-1804 professor of botany at the University of Turin and director of its natural history cabinet and botanical garden. The illustrations were drawn and engraved by the botanical garden's resident artist Francesco Peyroleri and his son Pietro. Our flora is also an important source of information on Alpine flowers. The modern binding is by an artisan who was proclaimed the "Grande Dame of French bookbinding" by the journal "Art & Métiers du Livre." Annie Boige trained at the Estienne School and at the Vésinet Applied Art Workshop before establishing her atelier in 1985. An art bookbinder she is noted for her monochrome color schemes and her use of beautiful leathers and vegetal materials a felicitous choice here. Michael Briolus unknown books
