How and why a well-managed garden plant or an introduction from abroad will suddenly become an aggressive weed. This is a work of the first importance by the leading authority on the subject. For though Sir Edward Salisbury was best known for his thirteen years work as Director of Kew and for his outstandingly successful gardening books he has accumulated over years of study a first-hand knowledge of our weed flora that is certainly unique. Weeds and Aliens was the result of half a century of observation and curiosity; it is likely to remain for a long time to come a standard work for botanists farmers gardeners and naturalists alike. The history and geography of British weed flora and effects on them of social or agricultural changes the distribution of weed seeds - by birds or aeroplanes in grain cargoes or trouser turn-ups - every aspect is fully and clearly explained with the biological peculiarities of the different species always in mind. The idea that because weeds are a nuisance they must also be dull is dispelled in a few pages. Not only does the author show that an understanding of these criminals of the plant world will make their control both easier and more interesting: he also imparts to the reader something of his own delight and wonder. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Slightly Worn. Collins Hardcover

1751Best.-Nr. 017563Stockholmiae & Amstelodami: Kiesewetter Godofr & Chatelain Z 1751. Latin text. Engraved frontispiece But see notes below octavo title page dedication page lectori botanico page 362 pages 9 engraved plates 2 full page engravings a little age-toning the occasional blemish or small mark the title page is a bit creased and stained in the gutter margin and there is offsetting from the frontispiece. which is chipped and with a closed tear repaired and mounted on a paper stub. Bound in possibly original marbled paper and more recent half calf slightly worn. Soulsby 437. The frontispiece is often lacking but the one we have here is not the usual frontispiece ! It is possibly a little smaller than the page size though this is not certain as it has been repaired and mounted; the offsetting to the title page which is obviously of some antiquity is definitely from the plate currently bound in. So - is it a variant or has it been added by a previous owner Interestingly I can only find one copy of this particular image online in the Wellcome Collection R. Burgess Portraits of doctors & scientists in the Wellcome Institute London 1973 no. 1778.10 ; listed as by Gustav Lundberg. It is "the first textbook of descriptive systematic botany and botanical Latin". It also contains Linnaeus's first published description of his binomial nomenclature. Philosophia Botanica represents a maturing of Linnaeus's thinking on botany and its theoretical foundations being an elaboration of ideas first published in his Fundamenta Botanica 1736 and Critica Botanica 1737 and set out in a similar way as a series of stark and uncompromising principles aphorismen. The book also establishes a basic botanical terminology. RARE. First Edition. Half Leather. Good. Kiesewetter, Godofr & Chatelain, Z Hardcover
1855Best.-Nr. 017571Stuttgart: J.B. Metzler 1855. Large octavo pp viii 474 ii some foxing and age-toning throughout but otherwise very sound internally bound in half cloth and marbled boards probably early twentieth century slightly rubbed. One of the cornerstones of nineteenth century grass taxonomy. The second part concerned Cyperaceae. RARE and one of the best possible provenances - Eduard Hackel's copy with his extensive manuscript notes and insertions throughout. It then passed to the Dutch agrologist Pieter Jansen who gifted it to C.E. Hubbard after a visit to the Kew Herbarium. ERNST GOTTLIEB VON STEUDEL was born at Esslingen am Neckar in Baden-Württemberg. He was educated at the University of Tübingen earning his medical doctorate in 1805. Shortly afterwards he settled into a medical practice in his hometown of Esslingen and in 1826 became the chief state physician in what had become the Kingdom of Württemberg. In 1825 together with Christian Ferdinand Friedrich Hochstetter 1787-1860 he organized an organization in Esslingen known as Unio Itineraria Württembergischer botanische severein. The purpose of this society was to send young botanists out into the world to discover and collect plants in all of their varieties thus promoting and expanding botanical studies and herbaria throughout the Kingdom and beyond. Hochstetter himself traveled to Portugal Madeira and the Azores and Steudel was able to create a herbarium of over 20000 species. EDUARD HACKEL 1850 - 1926 was an Austrian botanist. HE studied at the Polytechnical Institute in Vienna and became substitute teacher at a high school in St. Pölten in 1869. He became full professor of natural history there upon obtaining his teaching certificate in 1871 and remained in this position until his retirement in 1900. He published his first agrostology papers on grasses in 1871 and soon became known as a world expert agrostologist on the grass family Poaceae. While he himself undertook only a single collecting trip - to Spain and Portugal he was charged with working up collections of grasses mainly from Japan Taiwan New Guinea Brazil and Argentina. Apart from agrostologisty systematics Hackel also contributed to the morphology and histology of members of the grass family. The genus Hackelochloa Poaceae is named for him. C.E. HUBBARD of RBG Kew was probably the foremost grass taxonomist of the twentieth century. First Edition. Half cloth and boards. Good. J.B. Metzler Hardcover
