One of the world centres of crop evolution and origin Ethiopia has long been recognized as an important area of diversity for several major and various minor crops. Based on an international conference held in Addis Ababa this book describes how this genetic diversity is of vital importance in breeding varieties of crops with desirable characteristics such as increased resistance to pests and diseases and greater adaptation to heat and drought. The three main sections in the book consider the Ethiopian centre of diversity germplasm collection and conservation in Ethiopia and the evaluation and utilization of Ethiopian genetic resources. A broad range of food and feed crops and plants of medicinal and industrial importance are discussed both at a national and international level. A brief account of those conservation strategies and genebank problems unique to Ethiopia is also given. The importance of Ethiopia's plant genetic resources to world agriculture has been demonstrated on more than one occasion. First Edition. Boards. Very Good. Cambridge University Press Hardcover

He was one of the six Austrian teachers invited by Amir Kabir the Persian chief minister as the instructors of Dar ul-Fonun the first modern higher education institution in Iran. By his own account he entered Iran on 24 November 1851 before the inauguration of the Dar ul-Fonun. From 1851 to 1860 he taught medicine at Dar ul-Fonun. In the beginning he taught in French and used a translator. Soon the incompetence of the translators motivated him to learn Persian. He learned Persian in six months and then taught his course in Persian. In 1885 he funded Otto Stapf a Viennese botanist to undertake a botanical expedition to South- and Western Persia. This led to the discovery of numerous new species of plants. First Edition. Paperback. Fair. Karl Gerold's Sohn Paperback

2018réf. 013306Beckenham 2018. Tall quarto 224 pages pictorial boards a very good new copy. Published in an edition of just under one thousand copies and now out of print. The book celebrates the 500th Anniversary of the Royal College of Physicians and the 400th Anniversary of the Colleges "Pharmacopoea Londinensis" - the first pharmacopoeia to be mandatory for a whole country. This book contains specially commissioned paintings and drawings and late medieval woodcuts of nearly 200 plants growing in the Medicinal Garden of the College which were ingredients in the Colleges Pharmacopoea of 1618. Their contemporary uses are given from the publications of Nicholas Culpeper in 1649 and John Parkinson in 1640. The 17th century names of the 634 medicinal plants used in the Pharmacopoea have been painstakingly identified and listed with their modern botanical names - an invaluable resource for all interested in the history of plant-based medicine. The artists directory is included for all who seek commissions from them. Their work is a delight as are the earlier woodcuts from Fuchs Ruellius Matthiolus Dodoens Turner Lyte Gerard Parkinson Blackwell and Woodville. First Edition. Pictorial boards. New. Hardcover

2004réf. 1016Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh 2004. Fine/Fine. Hard covers dust jacket Fine in fine d.w. A "new type of flora" covering both the systematic and ethnological aspects of the Socotran flora Soqotran if you must. Designed some might say over-designed by Diccon Alexander and with ingenious fully-illustrated tabular keys this book is a mine of scholarship by Miranda Morris and Tony Miller. Colour plates from p. 233 to 280 are not up to the standard of reproduction achieved elsewhere in the text though anyone familiar with Migahid and Hammouda's flora of Saudi Arabia will not be disappointed. Per head of population Socotra must have the highest ratio of Plant Species to Humans of any island of comparable size in the world as well as one of the highest rates of endemism. This book deserves to be owned by anyone interested in owning a uniquely detailed account of one of the world's most bizarre and fascinating floras. Book is rather heavy: please ask for a transport quotation when ordering. Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh hardcover
