La crociata è stata iter, peregrinatio, passagium: spedizione militare, viaggio religioso, itinerario marittimo. Se ai tempi della prima spedizione (1096-99) la volontà di liberare dall'occupazione musulmana le terre in cui era vissuto Gesù si accompagnò a un grande fervore religioso, in seguito altri fattori decisivi motivarono le campagne militari in Terrasanta. Per le repubbliche marinare, la possibilità di ottenere il controllo strategico di rotte e porti mediterranei; per il papato, di aumentare il proprio prestigio; per i sovrani laici, di liberarsi di folle insofferenti e aristocratici riottosi; senza contare il desiderio di avventura, molto sentito nella società feudale, e il richiamo dei tesori d'oriente. Fede, interesse economico, attrazione per l'ignoto spingono dunque l'Europa cristiana in Oltremare. Più tardi la crociata diventerà lotta all'eresia, strumento di controllo politico, atto di difesa dell'antemurale balcanico e mediterraneo-orientale contro le offensive ottomane, custodia maris contro i corsari barbareschi, impegno di cristianizzazione del Nuovo Mondo. Un potente affresco che tesse in un'ampia narrazione una storia della crociata che, come idea e fatto, giunge fino ai giorni nostri.
