Folio. 13 individual issues each 4pp 13" X 18" plus 4pp introductory leaflet housed in tan cloth-over-boards portfolio with gilt lettering and leather clasp. Fine/near fine. Faint touch of wear to portfolio only. DOUGLAS: First and only edition of this facsimile set limited to 500 sets most in presentation envelope and only a small number in this deluxe hardbound portfolio format. Outstanding facsimile reproductions of the full run of this newspaper all with large and ornate pictorial masthead "which was issued" as introductory leaflet notes in subtitle "to further the candidacy of Stephen A. Douglas for the Presidency of the United States." Begins with number 1 dated June 30 1860 through number 20 dated November 17 1860. Original issues of this campaign newspaper are rare and this centennial facsimile set is itself quite scarce. LINCOLN: Facsimile reproductions of the complete file of "The Railsplitter" beginning with August 1 1860 through October 27 1860 each with large ornate pictorial masthead. Edition limited to 150 sets -- this copy with a signature of Newman tipped beneath the limitation statement of introductory leaflet in which Newman also provides the 2-page history. Original issues of "The Railsplitter" are quite scarce and a full run virtually unattainable -- and this deluxe clothbound facsimile edition has itself become very uncommon. A clean handsome copy. This pair of facsimile sets both produced in 1960 and matching in size and format were clearly intended to be complementary -- but a set of each in the deluxe editions are rarely found together. 1897ref. 170872Dehra Dún India: Surveyor General of India 1897. One of the greatest difficulties felt at the outset of the Tirah Campaign was the lack of topographical information Rare map issued on the eve of the Tirah Campaign; 750 copies were printed at the Office of the Trigonometrical Branch Survey of India in August 1897 two months before the outbreak of hostilities. Printed on linen and clearly intended for use in the field attrition rates would have been high: we have traced no copies among institutional libraries. In October 1897 one of the largest operations on the North-West Frontier involving 35000 troops under Lieutenant-General Sir William Lockhart was launched against the Afridi and Orakzai in the Tirah. "The two tribes had attacked several forts but also captured posts in the Khyber Pass which bordered the north of their territory. As Lockhart's main force crossed the Samana Mountains it found its route blocked by 12000 tribesmen occupying a steep ridge at Dargai" National Army Museum. Lockhart's troops suffered heavy casualties in the open ground in front of the Afridi positions but in a famous action the heights were stormed by the 1st Gordon Highlanders and 1st/2nd Gurkhas to the sound of Piper George Findlater's bagpipes. Lockhart's force then fought its way into Tirah and from its fortified camp at Maidan columns fanned out to pacify the surrounding valleys and regain control of the Khyber Pass. The expedition lasted until January 1898. As Captain H. L. Nevill points out in Campaigns on the North-West Frontier 1911 "one of the greatest difficulties felt at the outset of the Tirah Campaign was the lack of topographical information Many of the parts about to be invaded had never been visited by Europeans". An 1897 map entitled Rough Map of Tirah and Surrounding Country scale 1 inch = 2 miles measuring 930 x 60 mm issued at Simla by the Intelligence Branch is known only by the copy at the British Library. Photozincographed map printed on linen unfolded 740 x 1020 mm; folded 260 x 200 mm; scale 1 inch = 2 miles. Housed in a custom green cloth flap case gilt-lettered spine. Creased where folded peripheral toning some soiling on verso yet this remains in very good condition. hardcover

1904ref. 42841New York : Bloch Publ. Co 1904. Hardcover. 2nd English Edition 1st was 1876 Singerman 2550. Original printed gray wrappers 8vo xiv 1 16-53 pages. 23 cm. English translation of the Jewish Response to the First Anti-Shechitah Campaign in America giving an explanation of the necessity for Jews to maintain the laws of ritual slaughter. Aaron Zebi Friedman 1822-76 served as shochet or ritual slaughterer in his native Poland before immigrating to New York in 1848 where he found employment in one of the city's largest kosher slaughterhouses. In 1866 the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals launched the first anti-Shehitah campaign in America. The president of the Society Henry Bergh dispatched a letter to the proprietor of a kosher abattoir in New York accusing him of engaging in "barbarous revolting and wicked" practices-the letter is reproduced in full in this work. Bergh further called on him to desist from violating the laws of New York and of God by "mangling and torturing his creatures." Interestingly among the members listed in the letterhead of Bergh's letter were August Belmont the Rothschilds' representative in America and Charles P. Daly a chief justice of New York. In 1875 Aaron Zebi Friedman renowned for his piety composed a sharp rejoinder entitled Tub Taam to refute Bergh's accusations. He not only succeeded in silencing Bergh but even in convincing him: In 1885 Bergh defended shechitah against charges of cruelty leveled by the Philadelphia branch of his Society. Goldman 1092; JE Vol. V p. 518. Among those who supported the Jewish position on Shechitah in the struggle against the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was President Ulysses S. Grant. According to Joakim Isaacs Grant "was moved by this English translation.to eat only ritually slaughtered meat in the latter part of his life" See J. Isaacs "Candidate Grant and the Jews" American Jewish Archives 17. 1 1965 p. 15 n. 31; I. H. Sharfman The First Rabbi 1988 pp. 591-92. Apropos of the current culture wars animal rights organizations and activists within and outside of the Jewish world continue to criticize kosher slaughtering practices on the grounds of animal cruelty. The 1st edition of the English translation from 1876 sold at auction in 2015 for over $8000 with commissions; indeed that 1876 edition OCLC: 191279661 is rare with only 5 copies listed between Singerman and OCLC AJHS HUC Princeton Bar Ilan American Antiquarian. 2016ref. 83759New York City : The Donald J. Trump for President Campaign 2016. Presumed one of a limited number of original media request tickets. Laminated card/ticket. As new. Approximately 7.375 inches by 4.25 inches. Printed on only one side. The right side has a bar code and number at the top. Below is a picture of Donald J. Trump and Mike Pence together. Below that are two images one is of the original Trump Pence logo and the other is one of both Trump and Pence standing behind the original logo. As Donald Trump announced his new running mate Indiana Gov. Mike Pence his campaign unveiled a new logo that immediately became the object of ridicule on social media and inspired oh-so-many sexually suggestive responses. The new Trump-Pence logo enmeshes the candidates' initials — TP — with the American flag sparking immediate references to toilet paper and other bathroom wit. As the day continued T The designers might have anticipated this before releasing into the wild a logo with one letter penetrating another. "I can see this being sold to them as a visual representation of two people working hand-in-hand" said Ethan Imboden vice president of creative at Frog Design. "My guess is that was the intention to represent them more in the form of a monogram bringing together a T and P as a partnership." Trump's campaign unveiled a modified version of its Trump-Pence logo after the original graphic drew a lot of unintended attention. During Trump's official introduction of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate the campaign adorned a fundraising email with a simple "TRUMP" atop a "PENCE". Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller told CNN "We have a number of logos. The final one won't be unveiled until the convention." Over at the New York Hilton Midtown 1335 Ave of the Americas only a few blocks from his Trump Tower the Donald J. Trump Victory Party opened its doors at 6:30 p.m. Trump and running mate Mike Pence are hosting an invite-only gathering for friends and supporters of the campaign a divergence to the GOP candidate's usually large rallies. Trump admitted on Fox & Friends Tuesday morning that he is "a little superstitious" something a Washington Post source cited as the reason behind the low-key event. Make America Great Again hats and pins encased in glass cases bookended the stage inside the Hilton ballroom which was decorated with country and state flags. The loudest and most sustained cheer of the night erupts when the event's cable network of choice Fox News announced Ohio for Trump. Random "USA! USA" cheers erupt intermittently. The crowd keeps cheering "President Trump!" as NYPD counterterrorism bureau cops increase their presence. MAGA hats are being handed out. from suitcases. It became a long night for both campaigns.
