1960ref. 52271Lincoln IL / Chicago IL: Lincoln College / Abraham Lincoln Book Shop 1960. Paperback. DOUGLAS: Edited by J.W. Gray and C.F. Brown. Folio. 20 individual issues each 4pp 13¼" X 18½" plus 4pp introductory leaflet housed in burgundy cloth-over-boards portfolio with gilt lettering. Fine/near fine. Portfolio lacks leather snap closure. LINCOLN: Edited by J.H. Jordan and J.B. McKeehan. Folio. 13 individual issues each 4pp 13" X 18" plus 4pp introductory leaflet housed in tan cloth-over-boards portfolio with gilt lettering and leather clasp. Fine/near fine. Faint touch of wear to portfolio only. DOUGLAS: First and only edition of this facsimile set limited to 500 sets most in presentation envelope and only a small number in this deluxe hardbound portfolio format. Outstanding facsimile reproductions of the full run of this newspaper all with large and ornate pictorial masthead "which was issued" as introductory leaflet notes in subtitle "to further the candidacy of Stephen A. Douglas for the Presidency of the United States." Begins with number 1 dated June 30 1860 through number 20 dated November 17 1860. Original issues of this campaign newspaper are rare and this centennial facsimile set is itself quite scarce. LINCOLN: Facsimile reproductions of the complete file of "The Railsplitter" beginning with August 1 1860 through October 27 1860 each with large ornate pictorial masthead. Edition limited to 150 sets -- this copy with a signature of Newman tipped beneath the limitation statement of introductory leaflet in which Newman also provides the 2-page history. Original issues of "The Railsplitter" are quite scarce and a full run virtually unattainable -- and this deluxe clothbound facsimile edition has itself become very uncommon. A clean handsome copy. This pair of facsimile sets both produced in 1960 and matching in size and format were clearly intended to be complementary -- but a set of each in the deluxe editions are rarely found together. Lincoln College / Abraham Lincoln Book Shop paperback
1983Hand-numbered copy #123 of 250. Facsimile reprint of the 1823 first edition. "Illustrated by a detailed plan of the operations, and numerous plates of moutain and river scenery." - title page. Fold-out map at title page. "The history of European warfare affords few examples of battles which have been more important in their results, or more brilliant in their achievement, than that of Vitoria. The campaign too which preceded it was distinguished by a series of the most able manoeuvres, compelling the enemy to retreat from the frontiers of Portugal to a defensive position behind the Ebro, without being able to oppose the allies in any general action. Thus, in the short space of one month, the influence which the French had held over the Peninsula, during several years, was brought to a fatal crisis." - pages 1-2. Clean, bright and unmarked with negligible wear. An excellent copy. Book
