Covers soiled edges worn residue of rusted paper clip top of covers staples rusted text pages browned but unmarked. A good but age-worn copy of a rare offprint in protective mylar sleeve. It represents an important study in pediatric infectious disease child abuse public health and society in turn-of-the-century urban America by a pioneering female physician. "FLORA POLLACK 1865 – 1938 attended the Woman's Medical College of Baltimore graduating in 1891 then interned at the Blockley Hospital in Philadelphia. From 1896-1897 she was a Lecturer on Embryology at the Woman's Medical College and she became Associate Professor of Embryology and Physical Diagnosis there in 1897. She studied in Berlin in 1897 and then returned to Baltimore. She became an assistant in the Department of Gynecology at Johns Hopkins Hospital specializing in women's venereal diseases in 1900 and worked there until 1913 with a leave of absence in 1912. In 1909 during her time at Johns Hopkins she published a report titled "The Acquired Venereal Infections in Children: A Report of 187 Children Treated in the Women's Venereal Department of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Dispensary" offered here. In the report she detailed a trend that she had been seeing in her patients at the hospital - that of "the unusually large number of young children brought there for the treatment of acquired venereal infections." After investigating this situation she formed what she called an "infectionist theory." Apparently at the time there was a superstition widely circulated that a person infected with either gonorrhea or syphilis could rid themselves of the disease by infecting another person with it. The preference was to infect a virgin which meant that children were often the targets. Pollack hoped to counter this superstition with accurate medical information which led to her giving numerous talks on hygiene at various women's and children's institutions over the years. Pollack was one of the first doctors to attribute the extreme spread of gonorrhea and syphilis in children to assault by infected adults rather than through transmission via shared linens or restroom facilities. Along with Dr. P. S. Bourdeau-Sisco she founded the Woman's Medical Society of Maryland in 1914. Her main connection to the suffrage movement came in 1910 when she traveled to Annapolis to speak at a hearing before the Committee on Constitutional Amendments. Dr. Pollack argued for the right of women to vote based on the ability it would give them to protect their children through political action. Unfortunately this hearing did not lead to any concrete action by the Maryland Senate."-- Anna Assogba Research Librarian Harvard University Cambridge Massachusetts. Johns Hopkins paperback books

1900réf. 5954Fulton Pittsburgh 1900. Faux cloth over marbled boards with ownership label to upper left corner with school district and compiler information. Measuring 9 x 11.5 inches and comprised of 22 pages of sketches herbal specimens and sample essays all recto. Firmly bound and with some dampstaining to the lower gutter not affecting text. Representing a range of exercises completed by state normal school student Flora Yagle the book presents researchers with a range of study opportunities including turn of the century pedagogical practice and curricula as well as genealogical and social history work regarding the family structure work and education of first-generation immigrants living on the East Coast. One of seven children born to German immigrants Flora Yagle b. 1886-7 clearly grew up in a family that emphasized education and upward mobility. The paper label identifies Yagle as an eighth-year student indicating that she was probably in her early teens when she completed these lessons. Census documents from around the time of her birth and childhood list her father as a foundry worker; and into her adulthood they shift to record him as the general manager of the foundry. Similar ambition was instilled in his children who are documented in census information as students or unemployed during their childhoods with work only appearing in their adulthoods. During Flora's youth she had brothers working as clerks and bookkeepers. By the time of her adulthood she has become a school clerk while her sister has obtained a position as a librarian. Part of Flora's training would have been conducted at the Fulton Elementary School located in Pittsburgh's Highland Park. A neighborhood for the rising middle class Highland Park and its schools were still in their infancy while Flora was in hers; while the residential district had been opened in 1879 the school was founded in 1894 and both intended to provide fresh air open spaces and pleasant living to skilled workers and their families who were flocking to Pittsburgh for its work opportunities. Historically Pennsylvania had been a vanguard for public and progressive education. "In his 1830 address to the state legislature Governor George Wold championed the cause of universal public education" as a scaffold for "the security and stability of the individual privileges we have inherited from our ancestors" Explore History. Before the decade was over "more than 1000 local school districts under a single statewide system of instruction" had been founded working to regularize "educational standards curriculum and instructional credentials" in tandem with the 1857 Normal School Act which founded "a network of ten state academies to prepare public school teachers" Explore History. Flora's generation was a beneficiary of these policies. Her notebook shows a range of work with creativity and visual arts central to her learning. In addition to pressed floral specimens likely from the school grounds or her home garden her book also contains a visual and textual representation of the spectrum of colors in a rainbow; illustrated lotus blossoms with a short essay on the botanical facts and cultural uses of the flower in Egypt; black and white sketches focused on perspective and shading; geometrical figures designed to be cut out and folded but here present; and figure drawings of children in Victorian clothing much like she and her classmates would wear. Slightly cocked spine toning on the endpapers and slight wear on the board edges thus very good. According to the preface of the revised edition; "After training to be a doctor at the London School of Medicine for Women Flora Murray became an active member of the Women's Social and Political Union. At the outbreak of the First World War she and her fellow suffragists laid down their banners and sought to aid the Allied war effort. Working within the newly formed Women's Hospital Corps Murray and her colleague Louisa Garrett Anderson overcame initial prejudice and established two military hospitals in France in the period 1914 -1915. Their success prompted an invitation from the War Office to open the Endell Street Military Hospital in London staffed entirely by women. First published in 1920 Murray's account illustrated with numerous photographs records important steps in furthering the acceptance of women in the medical profession. For female doctors surgeons and nurses the war provided not only the 'occasion for service' but also 'get professional opportunities.' In Beatrice Harraden's preface in the original text she writes "This record of the work of the Women's Hospital Corps in France and especially at the Military Hospital Endell Street is a valuable contribution to the literature of the Women Movement. Dr. Flora Murray and Dr. Garrett Anderson made history at Endell Street. Through their initiative endeavor and efficiency they opened the doors to further fields of opportunity for women physicians and surgeons and not only for medical women but for all women who are setting out or have already set out to conquer fresh territory. We owe them a debt of gratitude the recognition of which will become even more accentuated as the years go on." A nice copy of an important women's medical text. Hodder and Stoughton hardcover books
