1923rif. 260827002San Francisco: The Book Club of California printed by The Grabhorn Press 1923. Limited Edition. Leather bound. Fine. Lange Dorothea; H. Von Schmidt. One of 400 copies quarto size 140 pp. in a deluxe binding with slipcase. A tribute to Oscar Weil 1839-1921 born in New York and educated as a musician. When the Civil War started he enrolled in the Northern cause as a private and by the end of the war he was a Major; however injuries received during the war meant he could no longer be a violinist. He therefore turned to composing and settled in San Francisco where he also served as the music critic for the Argonaut newspaper; he was a man much loved by the community as attested to by this memoir. Frontispiece a tipped-in photograph by Dorothea Lange from a painting of Oscar Weil by Olga M. Ackerman; when this photograph was taken Dorothea Lange 1895-1965 was living in Berkeley having recently married the western painter Maynard Dixon. Printed by the Grabhorn Press the renowned publishers/printers Edwin and Robert Grabhorn. This copy in a deluxe leather binding beautifully executed but with no binder's stamp or ticket that we can find. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full tan leather both boards with horizontal ruled borders one gilt and one black gilt lettering on the spine the spine bands extending slightly onto both boards with their tips decorated with a gilt star top edge gilt fore- and bottom edges uncut pastepaper endpapers tissue-guarded frontispiece the photograph by Dorothea Lange of a painting of Oscar Weil as referred to above title page in red and black almost every page of text has red lettering for marginal notes and capital letters some of which are blue; binding quarto size 11 1/2" by 7 3/4" pagination: i-xiv 1-119 blank 120 divisional title page "Compositions of Oscar Weil" 121 blank 122 3 pp. of compositions 123-125 colophon page 126 issued in an edition of 400 copies this no. 343. Housed in a slipcase covered with pastepaper with the opening trimmed in leather. ___CONDITION: The volume fine the leather smooth and supple and utterly without wear the corners straight and unrubbed a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; a stunning example. In Beatrice Harradens preface in the original text she writes "This record of the work of the Women's Hospital Corps in France and especially at the Military Hospital Endell Street is a valuable contribution to the literature of the Women Movement. Dr. Flora Murray and Dr. Garrett Anderson made history at Endell Street. Through their initiative endeavor and efficiency they opened the doors to further fields of opportunity for women physicians and surgeons and not only for medical women but for all women who are setting out or have already set out to conquer fresh territory. A thank you letter to a Mrs Blackhouse in relation to the club that deals with interests of the women. Flora Annie Steel 1847 - 1929 was a writer who lived in British India for 22 years. She was noted especially for books set in the Indian sub-continent or connected with it. Her novel On the Face of the Waters 1896 describes incidents in the Indian Mutiny. Size is 115mm x 90mm. His early life is an intimate picture of the New Hampshire family with a large family. In 1832 he joined Capt. Wyetg on a trip to Oregon Then he becam a passenger on a whaling vessel. Charles Wilson Greene 1865-1947 E Completed His Ph.D In 1898 And Taught At Depauw Normal And Preparatory Schools From 1889-1891 And At Stanford University Between 1891 And 1900 When He Became Professor Of Physiology And Pharmacology At The University Of Missouri. There He Established The First Laboratory For Experimental Pharmacology In The Mississippi Valley. Flora Hartley Was A Prominent Home Economist. Burton Warren Evermann Received His Doctorate From Indiana University In 1891 And Then Later Also Received An Honorary Doctor Of Laws Degree From The University Of Utah. He Was A Professor At Indiana State University Then A Lecturer At Stanford Cornell Yale And Later Worked For The U.S. Government And Traveled Widely Becoming The Chief Of Alaska Fisheries For Four Years And Fur Seal Commissioner After That. In The 1920S He Moved To California To Become Director Of The Museum Of The California Academy Of Sciences And Later Also Director Of The Steinhart Aquarium Of Golden Gate Park Which He Held For The Rest Of His Life. Meadie Hawkins Evermann 1854-1929 Was The First Married Woman To Graduate From Indiana University With A Degree In Zoology/Biology. First Book By Bradford Torrey 1843 - 1912 An American Ornithologist. Bradford Torrey Was Born In Weymouth Massachusetts On October 9 1843. He Was Educated In The Public Schools Of Weymouth Taught For Two Years And Subsequently Engaged In Business In Boston. In 1886 He Became An Assistant Editor Of The Youth's Companion. He Was Also A Frequent Contributor To Periodicals.Torrey Devoted Much Time To The Study Of Birds Their Habits Peculiarities And Domestic Traits. He Died In Santa Barbara California On October 7 1912.
