"Re-examines the record in order better to appreciate the past and present problems of Europe political and economic. The career of Hjalmar Schacht happens to be an excellent mirror for those problems: why democracy fell in Germany as it had in much of the world; why the unspeakable Nazi came to despotic power over one of the most cultured and civilized nations of the world; whether dictatorships are better qualified to deal with the complexities of industrial life; why foreign trade in the post-war world departed so far from the cherished principles of the nineteenth century; how and why war came to Europe and the world in 1939; how the citizen can react to the modern police state; what can be done to remove a modern dictator or whether it is possible at all; whether one major trend of the modern world class struggle can be replaced by the other nationalism; whether 'strong-man-rule' is the proper solution to the 'Bolshevik Danger'; what action can be taken to curb the dominant trend in the economy toward inflation; how should peace-loving powers treat a fanatical dictator - with force or with conciliation. It is a study of these basic problems of modern civilization rather than merely as the study of an individual who sought and obtained world-wide fame that this work was attempted." - Foreword. 1988réf. 736j2288New York: Columbia University Press. Good in Fair dust jacket. 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. 0231068387 . "Tells the story of the unusual and highly secret relationship between Abdullah the Hashemite ruler of Jordan and the Zionist movement. Spanning three eventful decades from the appointment of Abdullah as Emir in 1921 to his assassination in 1951 it focuses in particular on the clandestine diplomacy and the political and military processes which determined the fate of Palestine between 1947 and 1950 and which left the Palestinian Arabs without a homeland. Proves conclusively that Abdullah not only colluded with the Zionists to gain control over as much of Arab Palestine a possible but that he also received occasional payments for his collaboration. A riveting account which demolishes many of the myths and legends that have come to surround the birth of Israel the origins of the Palestinian problem and the causes of the Arab-Israeli conflict." - dust jacket. xvi 676 p. 1899réf. 313a1213Chicago: W.B. Conkey Company. Good. 1899. First Edition. Hardcover. 483 pages. "In this volume the author endeavors to give an accurate history of the present National Bank System of currency including an account of the first United States Bank - both of which were borrowed from Great Britain by those statesmen who like the father of Sir Robert Peel believed that a national debt was the source of prosperity. It is believed that the facts adduced in the following pages will be productive of some good in pointing out the immense evils lurking in that system of banking - a system which has produced panics at will and which is the active abettor of the stock gamblers railroad wreckers and those industrial tyrants of modern times the enormously overcapitalized and oppressive trusts. It is sought to point out the great dangers of delegating purely government powers to these greedy monopolists by which they are enabled to organize a money trust far more tyrranical than all the other combinations now in existence; and by which they absolutely defy the authority that endowed them with corporate life." - from Introduction. Twenty-one black and white illustrations including a tissue-protected black and white frontis portrait of author. Seven maps. Updated version of the first edition first published in 1918. "In the following pages I speak of Russian affairs with the experience of an observer who has lived from early boyhood among the Russian people and has shared with them their joys and sorrows. Since her collapse Russia has become the focus of social unrest throughout the world. Bolshevism - a foe more deadly to our civilization than German Militarism - cannot be effectively combated unless we understand the circumstances of its origin and working indissolubly connected with the so-called Russian Revolution - a Revolution that has still to justify its name. The questions that have been put to me so often will rise to the readers' lips - What is Bolshevism and Why did the Russians succumb to its influence. This book answers these questions in full." - from Preface. 1945réf. List3642The Bronx New York 1945. Approximately 120 drawings with one short school essay and one photograph captioned verso. Drawings generally measuring 9 x 12 inches. Conditions vary; drawings generally fairly delicate with damage to margins. Overall very good to excellent. A collection of artworks produced by Joan Meredith Legg 1931-2012 and her future husband Adrian C. Winkelhoff 1924-2016 when they were children in the Bronx about 1937 to 1945. Based on one caption the two were likely students at P.S. 46. Subjects include indoor and outdoor scenes many with New York City apartment blocks with figures standing outside; advertisements and PSAs for Fitch's Shampoo and Hair Tonic and for eating one's fruits and veggies; historical topics such as pilgrims and Indigenous people Thanksgiving scenes and several drawings themed around China with one of a man with a queue captioned on the verso "In the olde times in Chinia all Chiniamen wore pig tales and this Chinia man came from Chinia and got killed here". There are animals and circus scenes houses and boats gardens and snowmen. Legg also drew a series of geometric pattern designs from floral and Christmas-themed to an "Indian" design likely for a unit in school; and designs for a handkerchief napkin and several vases including a brightly-colored vase with a figure in a sombrero and poncho resting under a cactus. Several drawings are potentially related to current events such as a drawing of a factory and a series of two ships one with an American flag and another flying a nonspecific red flag. Overall the collection covers the children's observations of their neighborhood's apartment blocks and storefronts; their usual activities including church play and domestic scenes; units in school; and experiences of advertising and PSAs. Of interest to researchers studying urban childhood education and children's visual culture in late Depression- and World War II-era New York City.

1808réf. 6471Guadalajara: Apud Mariannum Valdez Tellez Giron 1808. Good. Three stitched fascicles totaling 30 manuscript leaves and fifteen printed broadsides and broadsheets completed both in manuscript and in type. Some folded. Straight vertical cuts from foot of one fascicle. Some dust soiling and toning; scattered damp staining and foxing. A few separations along folds of printed sheets. Head of some printed sheets trimmed away effecting some loss. A fascinating combination of printed and manuscript material relating to the completion of baccalaureate requirements for degrees in divinity from the University of Guadalajara in the early 19th century. Present here are three stitched fascicles each relating to a different student that contain manuscript attestations from the candidates themselves and university professors as to the individual's achievements as well as printed copies of their degrees and other official documents from the university bestowing honors upon the recipients. Each recipient was conferred a copy of their degree completed in manuscript and affixed with the printed seal of the university attesting that after four years in the study of "Sacrae Theologiae" he had achieved the rank of Baccalaurens. Then the three students Gabriel Sanchez Leñero Joaquin de Valdecañas and Miguel de Talaveras received different printed broadsheets completed to varying degrees in type and in manuscript according to their specific studies and accomplishments. In all we identify eleven different printed forms and broadsheets none of which are located by Medina or OCLC. Most bear the imprint of Mariano Valdes Tellez Giron the first printer of Guadalajara who worked alone in the city from 1793 to his death from an epileptic seizure at the end of 1807 making the present job work some of the last printing completed by this important printer. Some of the broadsheets printed on two joined leaves and folded into each fascicle have been trimmed at the head with the loss of some material including engraved illustrations. Nevertheless the present documents represent a trove of previously unrecorded early job printing from Guadalajara. Apud Mariannum Valdez Tellez Giron unknown
