Originally planned as a trip to study the bird life of the island it was soon enlarged to include an exploration of the interior. The original number of participants was 18 under the leadership of F C R Jourdain and was funded by subscription. A return trip occurred in 1922 by three of the original participants. This led to the organization of a second expedition in 1923 under the leadership of F G Binney devoted to exploration and a final expedition under Binney in 1924. Though Spitsbergen was a relatively well known area of the Arctic the interior had scarcely been seen. The goal of the expedition was a study of the "ecology" of the environment - something that was new. The Oxford University Expedition Club made small number of such trips to remote parts of the world prior to WWII issuing similar scientific reports. Oxford Univ. Very good; some rubbing to the cloth; pencil notes on the rear pastedown and endpapers as well as one offprint. Royal 8vo. The book bears the OUP press mark of the period on the spine and is bound in a green colored coarse weave linen cloth The club was founded in 1927 and mounted international expeditions on several occasions before WWII. The purpose of this expedition was twofold: 1 to find and climb the highest mountain in the New Hebrides; 2 to study the tropical rain forest where it was always wet. Mt. Tabwemasana at the interior of Espiritu Santo was highest peak in the islands. Members climbed to the top and left markers that were later located and recorded by American occupational forces during WWII. One of the members T H Harrisson remained behind to explore the little known island of Malekula south of Espiritu Santo for the Colonial Office. The report of his one man reconnaissance is included in this volume. Practical points of the expedition's progress and the conditions encountered on the island group were published in it's annual report for 1935. The expedition made no collections during this outing. Given the manner in which the book is made-up it is doubtful if more than 100 copies were produced. Oxford University Exploration Club by the Oxford Univ. Press hardcover books

John Buchan author of The 39 Steps advised the group to undertake a "tropical" expedition to avoid a succession of Northern undertakings the first club outing was to Greenland the previous year. The purpose of the expedition was not to explore unknown territory " . but to penetrate into the canopy of the tropical rain-forest which offered the prospect of discovering a zone of life practically untouched by science. . A preliminary ecological survey was to be attempted and such collections made as were relevant to the work in hand." The result were a series of pioneering reports offered here by the 12 members of the expedition. Given the manner in which the book is made-up it is doubtful if more than 100 copies were produced. Image size is 6 x 5 inches; including border and thin gilt frame the overall dimemsions are 14 x 9 1/2 inches. A fine watercolor rendering based on Ashmole's Foundation Portrait by John Riley at Oxford's Ashmolean Museum and used as a plate in Ackermann's The History of the University of Oxford 1814. The watercolor follows Riley very closely but there are differences: the subject's hand rests on a shorter book lowering the angle of the arm there is no ring on the left hand there are slight differences in costume and the subject's face appears thinner giving the impression of a younger man. Beneath the image is lettered in black ink "Elias Ashmole Esqr. / Founder of the Ashmolean Museum Oxford." Below this in the large bottom margin is written in pencil "The Original Drawing by Geo. P. Harding executed for Ackermann published in The History of the University of Oxford 2 vols 1814." Elias Ashmole 1617-1692 scholar courtier antiquary heraldric authority and author of The Institution Laws and Ceremonies of the Order of the Garter 1672 inherited through his friendship with John Tradescant keeper of the botanical gardens at Chelsea and his widow a large collection of artifacts and curiosities which he offered to Oxford with the stipulation that the University provide a building to house it which in 1682 it did. This building in Oxford's Broad Street is now the home of The Museum of the History of Science. Thus while he did not form the collection which bears his name it was he who catalogued it brought it to Oxford ensured its survival and set the Ashmolean Museum on the path to becoming the world-class institution it is today.
