First edition of this scarce and unusually complete salesman sample catalogue for Jazz era men’s suits in 1928-1929. J.L. Taylor maintained a huge tailoring operation in both Chicago and New York until after World War II employing hundreds of tailors and seamstresses to fill orders. The catalogues were very expensive to produce and so were most often found in department stores mercantiles and men’s stores which would have these catalogues on the sales floor for two years or more. The catalogue offers invaluable illustrated historical reference for the colours styles and fabrics during the era of F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Flappers. Most of the colour fashion plates illustrating the available styles have elegantly dressed women and settings in the background including with an emphasis on sporting in summer so golf tennis croquet canoeing boating and swimming all make an appearance. Of particular interest is the wonderful dress chart indicating styles needed clothes accessories and shoes which one would need for Day Wedding Matinee Reception Evening Dress and many others offering an excellent marketing opportunity for the store to sell the customer items to compliment his suits overcoats and other fashion wear ordered from J.L. Taylor. The final plate focuses on the lightweight “Palm Beach” & “Mohair” suits at the height of the 1920’s boom in Florida featuring snappily dressed models in Panama straw hats and a lightweight fedora. Worldcat locates 1 partial copy Preserved at the Library of Congress stripped of samples and used as scrapbook for Wilbur’s Drug Store prescriptions of Portland ME -- not an unusual occurrence. J.L. 1980réf. 223104Unknown.: No publication details. circa1980. A poster with the image of an old man Lao Lai Zi outlined with white characters on a black background text in simplified Chinese characters 77 x 52.5cm small 1cm closed tear right edge and lower left corner repaired. In good condition with clear and well defined characters making the text easy to read. Lao Lai Zi a symbol of aging and filial piety is here represented in what appears to be a white line drawing on a black background. On closer inspection however the lines are made up of poignant and occasionally amusing rhyming verses listing the indignities of old age imploring the young not to look down on the elderly. The original stele carved with a similar image titled “Lao Lai Nan” Growing Old is Hard is located at the Temple of the Medicine King in Beipo village in Shaanxi Province. It isn’t known exactly when the Beipo stele was carved but it is said to be related to a Mrs Li who lived in the temple and wanted it carved to teach her unfilial children a lesson. The use of simplified characters and catchy verse written in modern Chinese indicate that it is a 20th century artefact. The Beipo stele includes smaller carvings of eight old people using sticks along the vertical edges. This poster is a modern artistic stone rubbing interpretation of the main visual feature on the Beipo stele i.e. the central figure outlined in characters in a pose and design similar to the original. A well known educational Chinese folk illustration “Lao Lai Nan” is a moral lesson on respect for the elderly. 老来难, 老来难,劝人别把老人嫌, 当初嫌别人老,如今轮到我头前,千般苦, 万般难,听我从头说一番。耳聋难与人说话, 差七差八惹人嫌. … Getting old is hard it’s hard I urge you not to look down on the elderly. Earlier I despised others for being old but now that I’m facing it head on with a thousand kinds of troubles and difficulties listen to everything I say. Being hard of hearing makes it difficult to communicate if you miss this or that you annoy people… … … … … It’s hard to explain all the difficulties one can’t sleep and every night one gets up to urinate seven or eight times. I hate long nights cold breezes and I get sick from being in draughts. My lungs are weak and I cough and cough and cough up phlegm so my children dislike talking to me. They seem to think I’m unkempt and don’t look like my former self. So old and still not dead how much longer am I planning to live . No publication details. unknown

1804réf. 42382New York 1804. Single sheet written in ink script on recto. A deed 8" x 12-3/4" recording the sale of the 17-year-old "Negroe Boy Isaac" to Robert Weir by Catherine Brinckly 12 January 1804. Signed at the end "Catherine Brinkly" and witness John Brinckly. Toned old folds stabilized with text preserved by matting in a contemporary frame. Good plus. British policy in the early 17th century under the Duke of York owner of substantial interests in the Royal African Company encouraged importation of slaves to New York. By the early 18th century slavery was a cornerstone of the City's economy. Slave Codes rigidly regulated the activities and lives of slaves. But by 1804 slavery in New York was in decline thanks to tireless emancipation efforts of the New York Manumission Society Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. In 1799 New York passed an Act emancipating everyone born after 1799. But "It was not until March 31 1817 that the New York legislature ended two centuries of slavery within its borders setting July 4 1827 as the date of final emancipation and making New York the first state to pass a law for the total abolition of legal slavery. When Emancipation Day finally arrived the number of emancipated men and women freed was roughly 4600." Celebrations and parades occurred throughout the state web site of Historical Society of the New York Courts. By this deed Isaac became the property of Robert Weir 1770-1825 a prosperous New York merchant from Scotland who had recently married Mary Katherine Brinckley Brinkley 1783-1840. Mary Katherine Weir is known as composer of the song "The Lord of the Castle." Their infant son Robert Walter Weir 1803-1889 just six months old when this deed was signed became a well-known Hudson River School painter; two of his sons also became famous artists. Robert Sr. declared bankruptcy in 1813 due to French confiscation of shipping goods. "Weir Robert 1770-" Robert Weir Papers Brigham Young University Library Vault MSS 511 Series 1. The grantor Catherine Brinckly was likely Weir's grandmother-in-law mother of Mary Katherine's father Thomas Brinckley born 1754; or some other close relative. We located Thomas Brinckley spelled with the "ck" listed in early New York City directories as city marshal. His name last appeared in 1794 at Cedar Street and Catherine's name began appearing in 1795 at the same street with "widow" following her name. The 1810 census shows one free person of color living with the Robert Weir family and no enslaved people suggesting that Weir had emancipated Isaac .
