2000ref. 2045ARCHIVE OF THE FIRST 20 YEARS OF THE HUMAN GENOME PUBLISHED IN NATURE AND SCIENCE. Tracing the history of a collaborative international triumph of research in the dawn of the 21st century offered is a collection of 6 issues of Nature 3 issues of Science an issue of Newsweek a poster published by the Department of Energy and 2 compact discs. All items are in fine condition enclosed in an archival box with metal corners. Nature is a British weekly international scientific journal publishing peer-reviewed research across the natural sciences including biology physics chemistry the earth sciences and related interdisciplinary fields. Science is the peer-reviewed academic journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science publishing original scientific research and research reviews. Both journals are regarded as the premier publications of cutting-edge research with an international readership. The Human Genome Project was an international scientific research project with the goal of determining the base pairs that make up human DNA and of identifying mapping and sequencing all of the genes of the human genome from both a physical and a functional standpoint. It started in 1990 and was completed in 2003. It was the world's largest collaborative biological project. Level "complete genome" was achieved in May 2021 with only 0.3% of the bases covered by potential issues. Funding came from the US government through the Department of Energy and National Institutes of Health as well as numerous other groups from around the world. A parallel project was conducted outside the government by Celera Genomics which was formally launched in 1998. An initial rough draft of the human genome was available in June 2000 and by February 2001 a working draft had been completed and published followed by the final sequencing mapping of the human genome on 14 April 2003. The Human Genome Project through its sequencing of the DNA can help researchers understand diseases including: genotyping of specific viruses to direct appropriate treatment; identification of mutations linked to different forms of cancer; the design of medication and more accurate prediction of their effects; advancement in forensic applied sciences; biofuels and other energy applications; agriculture animal husbandry bioprocessing; risk assessment; bioarcheology anthropology and evolution. 1935ref. 236921935. Federal venereal disease control bulletin from October 1935 issued by United States Public Health Service on syphilis prevention and state health administration. The opening editorial "Social-Service Work in the Prevention of Syphilis" argues that syphilis should be treated as a communicable disease requiring investigation of infection sources cooperation among cities and states and trained public health personnel. Published before the expanded national antisyphilis campaign of the late 1930s the issue records the administrative and diagnostic framework being assembled to address the health crisis. Pencillin now the primary treatment for the disease was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928 but not found to be effective in the treatment of syphilis until 1943. Vonderlehr R. A. ed. Venereal Disease Information. Vol. 16 No. 10. Washington: United States Government Printing Office 1935. 32 pages paginated 347-378. 6 x 9 inches. Issued by the United States Public Health Service under Surgeon General Hugh S. Cumming with Vonderlehr identified as Assistant Surgeon General and Chief of the Division of Venereal Diseases. The editorial cites case tracing in Nancy Rotterdam New York and Virginia and calls for social workers to locate sources of infection and induce treatment while also revealing the period's moral and gender assumptions in its discussion of "frequently girls" prostitution delinquent minors and compulsory intervention. Subsequent sections summarize international reports on late syphilis lymphogranuloma inguinale salvarsan allergy calcium metabolism gonococcal polymorphism neurosyphilis congenital syphilis spinal fluid testing and the Wassermann reaction. The treatment section documents malaria therapy tryparsamide mercury injections arsenical poisoning diathermy and other methods employed before penicillin transformed the management of syphilis in the 1940s. The issue belongs to a period when federal officials increasingly defined venereal disease as an epidemiological problem requiring surveillance laboratory standardization and intergovernmental coordination while retaining coercive and moralizing ideas about sexuality prostitution race and public responsibility. Its discussion of malaria inoculation for neurosyphilis mercury and arsenic compounds cisternal puncture spinal fluid analysis and congenital infection preserves the working medical vocabulary of the pre-antibiotic era. An article titled "Arsphenamine poisoning occurring among negro women" attributes treatment complications to racial assumptions about anatomy and behavior. Wrapper soiling and staining edge wear rust at the two staples localized interior staining near the gutter light creasing and a small chip at the upper corner of the final leaf. "Between the World Wars the French took this ordinary craft stencilling and raised it to a high art notably in the livres d'artistes movement. Used for making coloring illustrations the stencil process pochoir in French brought brilliance to illustrated books never seen before and very little since. Stencilling is labor intensive; colors are applied by hand and as with many handcrafts went out of use by the beginning of World War Two. Jean Saudé most influential in the development of pochoir into an art and author of Traite d'Enluminure d'Art au Pochoir Paris 1925 believed that the technique could serve as a hyphen between the artist and the public and proclaimed that pochoir through its dependence on manual application in the reproduction process made possible true art instead of altered reproductions. Saude believed that pochoir was the only process which translated the artist's original intent from the first to the last print because it was done entirely by hand" V. Gerry Stencilling. Saudé specialized in finely illustrated books and collector's pieces but this book is his greatest legacy. It was the only contemporary book on the mechanics of pochoir and remains its finest example. HBS 69144. $3500. Editions de l'Ibis unknown books

1919ref. 189681919. Survey of Relief to Widows and Children Presented to Parliament by Command of His Majesty. Ministry of Health. 186 pages. London: His Majesty's Stationary Office 1919. Measures 9.5" x 6." Issued under the rule of George V a champion of welfare reform and social work. A landmark government report on post-World War I welfare policy documenting the scope administration and social implications of public assistance to widows and dependent children in Britain. Issued by the Ministry of Health and presented to Parliament in the immediate aftermath of the war this 186-page survey represents one of the earliest comprehensive attempts to analyze the treatment and conditions of war widows and impoverished families under the Poor Law system and other charitable schemes. The report is presented in dense statistical tables and detailed narrative assessments distinguishing between rural and urban jurisdictions and evaluating the differential treatment of illegitimate children and the moral assumptions underlying state relief. As stated in the Survey's prefatory note the decision to publish a report on the well-being of windows and children arose after a 1914 House of Lords case in which a poor mother was convicted of child cruelty. The woman whose earnings were 10 shillings a week locked her children in a rented room "where they were found in an indescribable state and in a mental condition bordering upon idiocy." The mother said she did not want to seek governmental assistance for fear that her family would be separated. This resulting survey examines the efficacy of Britain's social safety net as well as that of the United States. It contains case studies investigations and inspections.
