1983réf. 73511983. Bailey Pearl. Fred Allen Humanitarian Award presented on November 5 1983 honoring the African American singer actress and entertainer for public service beyond her stage and screen career. Bailey combined national prominence in theater film television and music with sustained humanitarian and diplomatic activity including service as a United Nations goodwill ambassador and recognition by several presidential administrations. The award documents the public-service dimension of a career that also included a Tony Award for the all-Black 1967 revival of Hello Dolly! and later the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988 supporting research into Black women in American entertainment celebrity humanitarianism and the cultural diplomacy of the late twentieth century. The Fred Allen Humanitarian Award / Pearl Bailey / November 5 1983. Shield-shaped presentation award with a metal plate mounted on a corresponding shield-shaped wooden plaque. The upper portion incorporates the paired theatrical masks of comedy and tragedy visually linking the honor to Bailey's work as a performer while the engraved plate identifies the award recipient and date. The object records a formal recognition of Bailey's humanitarian reputation during a period when she was known not only as an entertainer but also for diplomatic and charitable service; contemporary biographical accounts note her designation as an "Ambassador of Love" her United Nations work and her longstanding association with USO programs. Metal plate and wooden mount remain clean and well preserved with no significant wear reported; near fine.
