THE WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON CHILDREN AND YOUTH was a series of meetings hosted over 60 years by the President of the United States and was the first White House conference ever held. Under the leadership of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt Woodrow Wilson Herbert Hoover Franklin D. Roosevelt Harry Truman Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon the Conferences involved thousands of delegates from around the country. According to the Child Welfare League of America "the conferences were devoted to improving the lives of children across the Nation." Each conference focused on issues relevant to the decade in which the conference was held. In 1960 the "Golden Anniversary White House Conference on Children and Youth" expanded ways for children to explore their potential in order to discover creative freedom. The 7000 delegates attending this conference during Eisenhower's presidency met to study the factors that influence individual fulfillment—family religion education health and community life. As stated by Roy Sorenson in the INTRODUCTION "The Committee is proud indeed that Pearl Buck has provided the text for The Joy of Children and that she has written it with such heart. As a 1932 Pulitzer Prize winner and recipient of the 1938 Nobel Award in literature Pearl Buck stands in the ranks of American writers. And now in The Joy of Children her sensitivity to the universal and spiritual meaning of childhood adds another dimension to photography. The beauty and rhythm of her words combined with the appeal and vividness of the pictures has transformed an exhibit called "These Are Our Children" into a book titled The Joy of Children." PEARL S. BUCK 1892-1973 writes "The individual human cycle is not whole until man and woman look back to the parents who gave them life and forward to the children to whom they themselves give life. Only thus does the individual feel assured of his place in the eternal scheme of creation. … The strength or weakness of a nation is in the hands of its children. Yet our children are what we make them. They come to us helpless malleable dependent upon what we provide. They leave us as men and women the next generation the blessed or the doomed." 1941réf. 127181941. Youngstown Vindicator December 8 1941 records the United States' entry into World War II one day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and on the day Congress declared war on Japan. Published as military reports from Hawaii and the Philippines were still developing the issue presents American readers with casualty estimates reports of damaged battleships Japanese attacks on Manila and the congressional vote requested by President Franklin D. Roosevelt after his address describing December 7 as "a date which will live in infamy." The issue preserves the speed with which the Pacific war entered American civic and political life through breaking military news maps photographs and reports from Washington. Youngstown Vindicator. Youngstown Ohio. December 8 1941. Complete issue of 30 pages measuring 17 × 23 inches. The stacked front-page headline declares "Bombs Batter Manila / 1500 Killed 2 Ships Sunk at Hawaii / War Declared by U. S." Two photographs of United States battleships and a map of the Pacific theater accompany the coverage. Secondary headlines include "Raiders Fire Gasoline Dump Terrific Damage Reported at Philippine Capital; 1500 Die in Hawaii" "U. S. Fleet Will Press Blockade" "U. S. Battleships Reported Damaged Sunk" and "Congress Acts Against Japan Senate Ballots 82-0 House 388 to 1 After President Makes Personal Request." Interior pages include photographs of American jeeps aircraft and military installations extending the issue's coverage from the attacks themselves to the armed forces mobilizing for war. The December 8 publication date places the newspaper within the first twenty-four hours of the American wartime response before casualty figures and reports of naval losses had been fully established and while Japanese forces were simultaneously attacking American positions across the Pacific. The congressional vote reported here formalized the country's entry into a global conflict that would transform the American military economy and home front over the following four years.
