‎JACK AND THE BEAN STALK CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS Set of Six‎

‎An assortment of 19th century chromolithoraphic prints that were pulled from a children's book at one time. Colors are still bright. Some of the chromos have text of the children's book on reverse. Title above lines of text is "Jack And The Bean-Stalk." Full page prints on 9 by 10 3/4 inches pages. One of the pages has print slightly cut down with lower corners clipped and mounted on page of same type as the other pages. Possibly a publisher error at the time of printing with that print tipped in. These chromos were found together with a lot of Uncle Sam prints I am offering separately. They were possibly all from the same 19th century children's book but I can identify no such book. Some edgwear to the blank margins but prints themselves in nice condition aside from the one that is mounted. Four of the six prints show Jack with the giant. Beautiful examples of the chromolithographic art. Disbound. Very Good/N/A. 9 By 10 3/4 Inch Prints. Paperback‎

‎The Chromolithograph‎

‎London.: Zorn and Company. 1867-1869. Ex-library copy of an uncommon journal. Two volumes 141 OF 143 tipped-in lithographic plates 11 x 8 inches firmly bound in red cloth boards library binding with gilt title lettering to spine but no external library markings to spine; paste-down library ID on interior front covers of both volumes with clear evidence of a removed "check-out" slip on both volumes' front free end paper. 378 pp Volume I; 366 pp Volume II. Volume I: damage to image p. 267 and image p. 153 missing. Volume II p 214: private parts of Infant Jesus Titian surgically excised. Volume II pp 43-56 missing never bound in with loss of one plate. Offset or creasing to a margin on several tipped in plates; the bulk are clean and bright. Foxing chiefly to title page and table of contents in both volumes. A journal offering instruction in various aspects of art flower and fruit painting figure painting the art of illumination etc. with commentaries on the work of old masters with chromolithographic reproductions of famous paintings or contemporary art work. Numerous articles of general interest on a variety of subjects. It appears a primary aim of the journal was to provide color images of great works of art to the masses. The journal evidently was suspended for several months in late February 1868 and resumed publication with the July 4 number in which the publishers write: "Messrs. Zorn & Company consider it desirable to offer a few observations to the readers of 'The Chromolithograph' on the publication of the first number that has been issued since they became its proprietors. It is intended to spare neither exertions nor expense in endeavouring to carry out the view which 'The Chromolithograph' was originally established namely: That of placing within the reach of all classes of people an Art Journal illustrated in colours and in all respects of a high order of merit." Volume II contains the issue of March 27 1869 with three plates. This the final number is not present in copies held by many of the libraries having "The Chromolithograph" in their collections. . ‎CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS FLOWERS / SENTIMENTS Jones Owen illus‎

‎Eleven chromolithographs of fruit and flowers from "Fruits from the Garden and Field."‎

‎London. 1850. Each plate 10 x 7 inches. Plates have overall light foxing; the peach has discoloration at the top left of the sheet. Loosely laid into the original elaborately embossed leather binding which has been mended with a soft brown leather spine. Sold as a group of plates. This is a group of 11 of the 12 plates that were published in Fruits from the Garden and Field. As one would expect with a work associated with Owen Jones the chromolithography is of an extremely high quality including the use of gold lettering. These are naturalistic treatments of plants as opposed to the decorative design of much of Jones work but pattern is an important part of the image. Each plant is associated with a quality or sentiment which is elegantly but lightly lettered in gold and sometimes a little hard to read. The fruits and flowers are: apple utility; pomegranate hard to make out - amb.; wheat and hops strength & wealth; blackberries and other red berries charity; strawberries kisses; grapes hospitality; hazelnuts and grain retrospection; cherries smiles; mulberries tears; peach sensibility; apricots independence. . hardcover‎
