Bowitsch, Ludwig, Schriftsteller (1818-1881).
“An Ihn”. Eigenh. Gedicht mit U. O. O. u. D.
1 S. 4to. Vgl. Kosch I, 205 und Giebisch-G. 36.

In part: "Certainly your 70 years have been crowded and crowned with honors as Secretary of the American Copyright League whose work will I hope be crowned by our entrance into the International Copyright Union before we pass over to the majority; as Editor of the Century; as Scribe of the Immortals himself immortalized in contiguity; and finally as Ambassador from his beloved country to the land of his love." This last refers to Johnson's 1920-21 term as U.S. ambassador to Italy. An unusual item from one giant in the world of editing to another. unknown

BOWLER John P. ? ?
Typed Letter Signed
In 1927 this surgeon and urologist founded the revolutionary Hitchcock Clinic in Hanover New Hampshire -- the nation's first multi-speciality group practice -- and became its president in 1943 for many years; from 1927 until 1945 he also served as dean of the Dartmouth Medical School. TLS 1p 5" X 8" Hanover NH 1967 April 14. Addressed to Basil O'Connor 1892-1972 FDR's well-known law partner. Very good. Two file holes along top not affecting text. On "Hitchcock Clinic" letterhead Bowler regrets missing O'Connor's 75th birthday party. In part: "A flagrant imposition -- but I am sending under separate cover a copy of proceedings at your 75th birthday luncheon in New York. Will you autograph it for me I would like to leave it for my grandchildren -- that I knew such a man. I regretted missing it more than I can tell you -- was starting on my way but big storm and no planes and got stuck. I have never read a comparable list of honors and decorations for contributions for the good of humanity. You must be very happy and can be justly proud." Boldly signed "Jack Bowler" in blue fountain pen. A handsome little medical item. unknown

BOXER REBELLION. NORTON WF. ? ? W. F.
Signature and Salutation
In 1901 the United States Army dispatched two regiments to China during the Boxer Rebellion and the China Relief Expedition; one of them the 9th U.S. Infantry or "Fighting Ninth" one of the oldest regiments in the Army was sent to Qing and successfully assaulted the walled city of Tianjin -- earning them the nickname "Manchus"; afterward they returned to the Philippines. Offered here is quite a military oddity: A signed and inscribed card from a run-of-the-mill American soldier who participated in this action a regular G.I. Joe -- not one of the handful who earned Medals of Honor for special conduct. "With complements of / Sergent W. F Norton / Co. 'M' 9th United States / Infantry. / Pekin / China" penned boldly in black on a heavy stock 4" X 2" card n.y. Very good. Moderate age toning. Highly unusual and interesting in that Norton was not signing this back in the U.S. and noting his participation in the quelling of the Boxer Rebellion -- but actually signed while in China! A note penned on the verso in another hand reads: "Pekin May 1-1901 / Sir: / This is from the / Chinese Imperial Press / of Pekin as a sovenir / from China." We've not been able to unearth any specifics about Norton or his role. unknown
