Adieu ».‎

‎BRIGHT Jesse D. 1812 75 and WHITCOMB James 1795 1852‎

‎Signed Stone Lithograph‎

‎U.S. senators from Indiana. Most unusual item: single leaf 7" X 9" probably the frontispiece of an Indiana state history captioned "Indiana" at the top. Below this is a charming stone lithographed pastoral scene depicting a shirtless man in the foreground chopping down a tree vast fields extending behind him; the sun is just breaking over the horizon and a bull is romping playfully. Facsimile signatures of Indiana senators Albert S. White and Edward A. Hannegan appear below this. Their Senate terms overlapped from 1845 to '49 thus dating this frontispiece. Their two successors Bright who served 1845-62 and Whitcomb 1849-52 have each signed boldly beneath the facsimiles. Very good. Moderately foxed throughout but overall attractive. An interesting pairing of Hoosiers on an appropriate if odd item. Whitcomb died in office while Bright was expelled from the Senate for treason. unknown‎

To the Austrian art historian Franz Fuhrmann, thanking him for several days spent in Salzburg and expressing his awe of the "incomparable beauty of nature and human creations" in the city. - Brindisi had an exhibition at Galerie Welz in March 1956 that was opened with a presentation by Franz Fuhrmann. During his stay he met the expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka, who influenced his later work. Inspired by the beauty and history of the city, Brindisi painted "Salzburg - Mozartplatz" in 1956. - The inscription was written to thank Fuhrmann for his presentation. The "biographical note" in German with its added underlinings and annotations probably served Fuhrmann for his presentation. - Well preserved.‎

‎Brink, André, Schriftsteller (geb. 1935).‎

‎Ms. Brief mit eigenh. U. Grahamstown, 20. I. 1984.‎

‎½ S. 4to. An den schwedischen Schriftsteller und Journalisten Ingmar Björkstén: “By and large I think you have admirably captured the essence of our conversation. There is only one slip which I should like to point out: in part 2 of page 2 (of the translation of our interview), where I talk about expressing experience in different languages, it is much more concrete and thus better adaptable for the philosophic and the abstract: first I think ‘emotional threshold’ is a better expression of my thoughts than ‘pressure’. But much more importantly, I was referring to ENGLISH as being more suited to philosophical and abstract thought, NOT Afrikaans! [...] - Brink, Professor am English Department der Rhodes University, zählt zu den renommiertesten Schriftstellern Südafrikas. Sein Roman ‘A Dry White Season’ (‘Weiße Zeit der Dürre’) wurde 1989 von Euzhan Palcy mit Donald Sutherland, Susan Sarandon und Marlon Brando verfilmt. - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Briefkopf; mit kl. ‎Brink, Jules ten, Dutch composer (1838-1889).‎

‎Autograph letter signed. 9, rue de Douai [Paris], 1. III. 1888.‎

‎8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. To an unidentified editor, asking him to reprint an article from the French daily "L'Estafette" about the first concert of his son Henri ten Brink, a student of the Belgian violin virtuoso Martin-Pierre Marsick: "Mon fils Henri, élève de Marsick, vient de faire ses débuts dans le monde musical et a obtenu un beau succès. Je vous serais reconnaissant si vous vouliez bien reproduire le petit article ci-inclus et découpé dans l'Estafette". - Jules ten Brink was a student of Auguste Dupont in Brussels and Ernst Friedrich Richter in Leipzig. He worked as a bandmaster in Lyon from 1860 to 1868 and later as a piano teacher and composer in Paris. Ten Brink's compositions include an orchestral suite (1874), a symphonic poem (1876), a symphony, two violin concertos, as well as the comic operas Calonice (1869/1870) and Mascarille (1888). After his studies in Paris, Henri ten Brink (1856-1920) emigrated to South Africa, where he worked as a musician and composer. - Minor browning. Well preserved. With collector's notes in pencil (verso).‎

‎BRINKLEY David 1920 2003‎

‎Signed Postal Cover / Photograph‎

‎Highly-regarded American broadcast journalist who hosted NBC's "The Huntley-Brinkley Report" with Chet Huntley 1956-70 and ABC's "This Week with David Brinkley" 1981-98 among other things. Signed Postal Cover 6" X 3" cancelled in Wilmington North Carolina on July 10 1969. Near fine. 5-cent "Carolina Charter 1663-1963" and 1-cent "Thomas Jefferson" stamps. NOT a First Day Cover and with no engraved cachet at left -- but an imaginative collector had this cover cancelled on Brinkley's birthday July 10 in his hometown Wilmington -- very cool. No distracting recipient's name/address present -- but Brinkley signs near the "sweet spot" boldly and attractively in blue fountain pen. Small portion of original transmittal envelope also present. Accompanied by a fine 7" X 9" glossy publicity portrait showing a determined arms-crossed Brinkley in 1984 -- accompanying printed caption notes "ABC News correspondent David Brinkley will share anchor duties with Peter Jennings for 'The '84 Vote' coverage of the Democratic National Convention." A handsome pair. unknown‎

Très cordialement". Français‎

‎Brion, Marcel, French novelist, critic, and art historian (1895-1984).‎

‎5 autograph letters signed. Paris, Aix-en-Provence, Nervi (Genua), and Marcillat-en-Combraille, ca. 1935-1959.‎

‎Various formats. Altogether 10 pp. Correspondence with the publisher and librarian Maurice Delamain, his wife, and Delamain's publishing company Stock in Paris. The earliest letter, dated 18 March, concerns Brion's historical biography "Théodoric, roi des Ostrogoths" (Payot, 1935). Brion is glad that the Baltic German philosopher Hermann von Keyserling (1880-1946) was willing to read the book and informs Delamain that he asked his publisher to send a copy to Keyserling as well as to Delamain himself, as he was also hoping for him to comment on the book: "A writer is lucky to have two readers such as Keyserling [and you] and if, by any chance, this Théodoric does not discourage you from reading other historical books that I have written, I am infinitely happy to send them to you [...]" (transl.). Delamain was Keyserling's French publisher from 1933. - A letter dated 15 November that reached Stock on 20 November 1944 concerns a translation of the Danish novelist Jens Peter Jacobsen. Brion, who had proposed to Stock a translation of Jacobsen's short stories, reacts to the information that they were already working on a publication with Lucien Maury: "I have seen too many examples of such clashes of translations to feel too much of a disappointment reading your letter. Indeed, I am glad I did not offer my translation of J. P. J.'s novels to any publisher other than you, which would have provoked a 'double' [...]". He mentions the competing Whitman translations of Louis Fabulet and Léon Bazalgette as an example, underscoring that he has "no intention of entering in a competition with Mr Lucien Maury", whom he praises as an experienced translator. Brion offers his thoughts on Jacobsen and his support of the publication "in all the journals to which I have access [...]". Maury's translation of Jacobsen for Stock did not go forward, after all, nor did Brion's translations. In February 1946, Brion offered his novel "La rose de cire" to Delamain, which was ultimately published by Albin Michel in 1964. In the second part of the letter, Brion mentions that Maury wrote to him about "difficulties with paper" delaying the publication of his Jacobsen translation and lauds Maury's biography of Victoria Benedictsson. - The remaining letters in the collection are of a more personal nature. On 21 January 1959, Brion thanks Delamain for a gift: "a noble alcohol is the natural complement to a beautiful book, and I congratulate you on creating both the one and the other equally perfectly", also sending greetings to his wife. The only letter written to Delamain's wife, dated 11 May, concerns the cancellation of a meeting. - The letter mentioning Keyserling shows continuous tears along the borders causing minor text loss, with notes in pencil and strong browning. The remaining letters have occasional minor tears, creases, and minor browning.‎
