Charming letter to an actor or playwright, possibly Léon Guillard, asking him for a box seat for the performance of his latest play: "vous n'êtes pas gentil, vous ne m'avez rien réservé l'autre jour pour voir la pièce nouvelle. Ce soir, je voudrais la voir. Je viendrai au théâtre et je vous prie de me bien placer dans une loge. Je serai toute seule, car je ne veux pas voir le reste des spectacles et je n'inviterai personne à venir avec moi. - J'irai causer avec vous après [...]". - François-Joseph Talma discovered Louise Rosalie Allan-Despreaux in Brussels at the age of ten and engaged her to play children's parts at the Comédie-Française. In 1831, she joined the Gymnase theatre, where she performed for six years, delivering a series of successes. Following an equally successful ten-year engagement at the French Theatre in St Petersburg, Allan-Despréaux returned to the Comédie-Française in 1847. For her return, she personally selected Alfred de Musset's "Un Caprice", which she had played in St Petersburg. The premiere at the Comédie-Française laid the cornerstone of Musset's lasting fame as a playwright. - With collector's notes in ink and pencil. Traces of creases and a tear to the fold.

Grün-blauer Leinenband mit goldgepr. Deckeltitel "Notes", goldgepr. Umschlaglasche, 1 Einsteckfach und Stifthalterung. Kl.-8vo (Blattgröße 123 x 74 mm). Stempel "Nachlass Sig. L'Allemand". Mit einer Beilage. Das vorliegende Skizzenbuch enthält vorwiegend Ansichten von Häusern, Kirchen, Dörfern, Kuppen und Landschaften, daneben aber auch eine Anzahl von architektonischen Detailstudien (Dächer, Pilaster, Fenster, Torbögen), mehrere Portraits (ein Klosterbruder, ein Frauenkopf und ein Polizeibeamter oder Soldat) sowie Skizzen von Pferden, Hirschen und einem Löwenkopf. - Auf den ersten Seiten finden sich teils englischsprachige Notizen, aus denen nicht deutlich wird, ob es sich um die Stationen einer Reise handelt, da nur zwei Bewegungen vermerkt werden ("Bridge of Stein […] we arrived there at half past two" und "Sunday the 19th left Linz on bo[a]rd oft he Bavarian steamer 'Queen Mary'"), sonst aber nur Aufzeichnungen anderer Art über Städte und dort Ansässige. Vermerkt sind Salzburg ("Gablerbräu" und "Untersberg"), Graz ("Mariahilf Josefigasse 132 St. Jacob"), München ("Gasthof zum Ober Pollinger Karlsthor - München", "Franziskaner vis à vis der Post", "Schellingstraße No 12"), Walhalla ("248 Stufen Steinmetz Meister Baumgartner") und Nürnberg ("Rössel Gasthaus"). Weiters finden sich darin einige Sinnsprüche ("Wandrer! steh hier still / Und weil ein Wenig hier / Sieh Deiner Reise Ziel / Das bleibt von allem Dir"; "Ohne Trennung kein Wiedersehen / Ohne Tod kein Auferstehen"; "Auf und nieder geht der Eimer / Und die Krüge sind gefüllt; / Doch das Plaudern nimmt kein Ende / Wann wird Neugier je gestillt"; "Ich bin eine Jungfrau wohlgestalt / Und wen ich küß, der wird nicht alt"; "Es eilt das Kind mit leichtem Herzen / Durch seines Daseins sel'ges Glück, / Und läßt dabey von seinen Füßchen / Im Sand kaum eine Spur zurück"; "Dem Jüngling ist das Herz schon schwer / Er trägt noch andre Herzen mit - / Und tiefer drücken sich die Spuren / Im Staube ab bei jedem Schritt") und auf den letzten Bll. eine dreiseitige trivialphilosophisch anmutende Betrachtung ("Gibt es nicht mehr Dinge im Himmel und auf Erden als sich unsere Filosofie träumen läßt? One of the last of the singing cowboys known as "Mister Cowboy" and "The Arizona Cowboy" Allen starred in cowboy films of the 1950s and is credited with composing 300 songs among them "Crying in the Chapel" 1953. Uncommon glossy oversize IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" Kankakee IL 1961. Very good. Image is superb and unflawed but ink contrast is good only. Handsome head-and-shoulders closeup of a smiling Allen in plaid shirt scarf and white ten-gallon hat inscribed enormously in the light area above his hat in blue ballpoint: "To Donald / My Best Always / Rex Allen / 1961 / 'Kankakee.'" Very attractive and unusual despite mediocre ink contrast -- likely created for some cryptic promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. Choice vintage piece probably one of a kind in this large format. Striking display item. unknown

This American lawyer is best known as the author of popular adventures tales for young adults such as "Silver Rags" 1886 and as editor 1881-93 of "The Cottage Hearth" "The Wellspring" and "Our Sunday Afternoon." AMS 1p 5�" X 7" n.p. n.y. minuscule pencilled 1922 December 17 in another hand. Near fine. Boyd boldly pens a poem titled "Sunrise" in black ink eight lines of verse reading: "Age calls us not to grieve our lives away / With sombre face turned toward the setting sun; / But as the Alpine guide at break of day / Surmounts the rugged foothills one by one / Leaving the waning shadows of the night / To meet the radiant dawn but just begun / Bids us fare onward upward toward the light / Climbing into the sunrise on the height." Handsomely accomplished with large margins. Boyd published one volume of poetry "In the Morning" 1890 but "Sunrise" is not included in that collection and it is unknown whether this piece ever appeared in print. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Johannsen's original 8�" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown

Francis M.D. 1789-1861 an influential physician and New York Historical Society. Near fine. Interesting content concerning John Pintard 1759-1844 a merchant and philanthropist who helped found the New York Historical Society. "Ich glaub an die Wiener Dreieinigkeit | An das 'Weib', an den 'Wein', den 'Gesang' | Ich glaub' an mein Wien, an mein herrliches Wien | Mein ganzes Leben lang". - Geboren als Sohn eines Wiener Gemeinderates, besuchte Franz Allmeder die Kunstgewerbeschule und danach die Akademie der bildenden Künste. "Daneben widmete er sich auch der Musik und studierte an einem Wiener Konservatorium. Bereits während dieser Zeit komponierte und textete er seine ersten Wienerlieder und wienerischen Tanzstücke, einer Sparte, der er Zeit seines Lebens treu blieb. In der Folge etablierte sich Allmeder vor allem als Textautor und Schriftsteller, schrieb zahlreiche Liedertexte für die Volkssängerin Hansi Führer sowie für alle führenden Komponisten des Genres, u. a. für Edmund Eysler, Ludwig Gruber, Rudolf Kronegger, Roman Domanig-Roll, Heinrich Strecker" (Österreichisches Musiklexikon, s. v., Abbreviaturen aufgelöst). 1921 war Allmeder zusammen mit Ludwig Gruber Mitbegründer der Gesellschaft zur Hebung und Förderung der Wiener Volkskunst.
