ALS 3pp separate leaves 8�" X 11" Lincoln Memorial University letterhead Harrogate TN 1941 July 11. Addressed to noted Lincoln scholar ARNOLD F. GATES 1914-93. Near fine. McMurtry replies graciously to some huge research questions the young scholar must have posed. In part: ".your questions will be rather difficult to answer off hand. The questions to be properly answered would require weeks of research work. I would advise you to get a good history of Ohio Nicolay & Hay's 'Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln' and Daniel J. Ryan's 'Lincoln and Ohio' from the public library in Cleveland. In these books you will find most of the answers to your questions. I will be glad to help you on any technical questions that may confront you in your research work on Nancy Hanks." Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. On letterhead of "The Lincoln National Life Foundation" which cites him as director McMurtry discusses a Lincoln p.r. event coming up in that centennial era: "I was delighted to receive in yesterday's mail the Broadcast Music Incorporated's folder of the first seven broadcasts which they are featuring this Lincoln sesquicentennial year." Goes on about various Lincoln matters and signs off simply "Gerald" in black ink. Accompanied by one of these later BMI broadcasts authored by himself "The World of Tom and Nancy Lincoln" a 6-page 8�" X 11" radio broadcast script published by music licensing giant Broadcast Music Inc. later this same year. On delightfully corny letterhead of "Clyde McPhatter's Tune Shop" this rare letter was written shortly after his split from the Drifters and the height of his fame as a soloist. A gracious letter to an admirer reading in part: "Hope that you will like the little verse that I am sending you. Very sorry that I don't have any pictures at this time hope when you write again I'll have some on hand. So until then be good." Bold full signature. Yellowed tape stain at each corner and two more small tape stains along right edge touching slightly upon a couple of words. Curious free verse poem or song lyrics -- whether to one of McPhatter's published songs is uncertain. "I want to walk in the shadow of your arms" it begins. "I want to live by the touch of your lips. I want to be in the River with you while the sea's calm I want to live and love I don't want to miss. I want to live with a love that's divine I want to be with you and give you all my love. I want to say that you are mine. I want to ask faith from the one above." Boldly signed at the conclusion. An unheard-of McPhatter rarity quite intriguing and exceedingly scarce -- and worthy of further research. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. NOT a First Day Cover but a clever admirer had this envelope bearing an appropriate labor-related stamp cancelled in Meany's hometown New York City on his birthday August 16 -- which Meany then signs large and bold in purple fineline on the "sweet spot." Quite nice. Accompanied by a superb and scarce vintage glossy 9" X 7" news agency International News Photos photograph. Very good. Slight bit of edgewear. Candid half-length photograph of Meany standing alongside a smiling President Eisenhower. The original usually-absent mimeographed text printed on cheap acidic paper is still present dated 21 November 1952: "George Meany secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Labor right shown as he talked with President-elect Eisenhower at the general's Commodore Hotel headquarters today. Shortly after this conference news broke of the death today of William Green longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. 20,2:15,8 cm (Bildausschnitt) auf 34,4:25 cm (Blattgröße). Gewidmet ist die ansprechende halbfigürliche Darstellung dem “lieben Freund und Kollegen” Carl Baumann (1824-1907). - Der in Fürth geborene Schauspieler Leonhard Meck kam über Nürnberg, Hamburg, Bremen, Braunschweig und Magdeburg 1830 nach Frankfurt, wo er als Darsteller, Regisseur und seit 1848 auch als Musikdirektor wirkte. “Er zählte im Schauspiel und im Lustspiel zu den hervorragendsten Darstellern er[n]ster Väter und komischer Alten” (Philipp Stein, Dt. Schauspieler II, zit. n. DBA II 868, 123). - Der Lithograph Valentin Schertle (1809-1885) war Schüler und Gehilfe des nur um wenige Jahre älteren Lithographen und späteren Hofphotographen Franz Hanfstaengl (1804-1877) in München und Dresden. In St. Petersburg, Warschau und Frankfurt a. M. schuf er zahlreiche Lithographien nach Bildern von Delaroche, Raffael, Guido Reni u.a. Vgl. Thieme/Becker XXXX, 37.

Eigenhändige Sentenz mit U., eh. ausgefülltem Formularteil und eh. Namenszug und eh. Sentenz mit U. Berlin, o. D.
2 SS. auf 2 Bll. Folio (223:282 mm). Jeweils mit gedruckter Bordüre (davon eines mit gedr. Fußzeile "Beitrag zum Selbstschriftenalbum 'Deutschlands Zukunft'" und gedr. Formular für biograph. Daten, eines mit montiertem Schildchen "Beitrag zum [...]"). Jedes Blatt aufgezogen auf einen Bogen Pergamentpapier (ca. 330:344 mm). "Die Epigonen machten stets den Geist zum Handlanger der Macht. Aber: 'Macht allein bezwingt nicht, sie muß der Handlanger des Geistes sein, nur dann ist sie von Dauer'. Das ist aller Staatsgründer gutes Prinzip! [...]". Die zweite Sentenz von ähnlichem, etwas abgewandeltem Inhalt. - Geschrieben als Beitrag für die von Friedrich Koslowsky im Berliner Eigenbrödler-Verlag herausgegebene Faksimile-Anthologie "Deutschlands Köpfe der Gegenwart über Deutschlands Zukunft" (1928). Die erstgenannte Sentenz bei Veröffentlichung in Druckschrift wiedergegeben. - Walter Meckauer war von 1918 bis 1922 Leiter der schlesischen Ullstein-Redaktion, danach Dramaturg an mehreren deutschen Bühnen. Begleitschreiben an den Mediziner und Autographensammler Joachim Ruf in Pfungstadt mit Dank für übersandte Texte, mit Freude über die bevorstehende Heynicke-Publikation Rufs, der Absage an eine Illustrationsanfrage und mit einem Verlagstipp: "Illustrieren oder bebildern will ich nicht, kann ich nicht, bin kein Illustrator und mag Bücher nicht, die man mit Grafik teuer macht (und die dann keiner liest). Am besten wäre ein junger Verlag, kein grosses Haus und kein bibliophiles, zum Beispiel könnte man die Janus-Presse in Berlin zu interessieren versuchen (Verleger ist der Mann von Christa Wolf) [...]". - "Da ich Manuskripte, private Papiere nicht in unbekannte Hände weggeben will, bitte ich Sie dieses Gedicht, extra abgeschrieben für Sie, für Ihre Sammlung anzunehmen [...]" (signiert mit Stern und abnehmendem Sichelmond). - Ohne die erwähnte Beilage.

1 S. Gr.-8vo. An das k. k. Kameralzahlamt betr. "der in den Monaten September und Oktober l. J. aufgelaufenen Auslagen". - Seit 1828 im Staatsdienst stehend, wurde Karl Frh. Mecséry von Tsoor 1848 Vizepräsident des Guberniums in Prag und im Jahr darauf Landeschef und Statthalter von Böhmen; 1860 wurde er als Polizeiminister nach Wien berufen und war zuletzt als Statthalter in der Steiermark tätig.
