[Elisabeth of Romania].
Typed inventory of Princess Elisabeth's confiscated jewellery. Paris, 4. V. 1956.

A documentation for Maitre Lefevre-Pontalis, partly in Romanian, about four suitcases of jewellery confiscated during the forced departure of Princess Elisabeth (1894-1956) from Romania due to her expulsion in 1947, when the Romanian People's Republic had been proclaimed. Alexandre Scanavy, owner of a part of the jewellery in the cases, obtained the jewellery through the Romanian Communists but did not return it to the Princess. In 1948 several inspectors ascertained ten pieces of jewellery belonging to Princess Elisabeth, enumerated in a separate list. - Four leaves with blind-embossed letterhead "Maison civile en France de S. M. la Reine Elisabeth", one leaf with hand-written notes, some rust stains from an old paper clip, some slight marginal defects. Includes an autograph list by Elisabeth's lover Marc Favrat, noting photocopies given to Lefevre-Pontalis, and a leaf with a typed document titled "Dossier 'Affaire secours d'hiver Belge/Banca Romaneasca'" (with an additional copy), repeating Favrat's list and adding a note.

To Marc Favrat ("Sa Altesse Royale Prince Marc") in Golfe-Juan, concerning the final settlement for the Villa "Rosalba". Broken or lost inventory is noted, as well as outstanding bills for gas, electricity, and telephone. As there is no detailed information on the exact number of missing objects, a total debt of 40,500 francs is estimated, of which a note states that Favrat has already deposited 6,000 francs upon his departure. As the letter records, Favrat and the owner of the Villa "Rosalba", Madame Berger, are in agreement about the aforesaid objects and the generally good state of the villa: "Le tout est de savoir la quantité, mais comme l'inventaire ne le mentionne pas nous nous en reporterons à votre bonne foi pour faire une quote mal taillée entre les 6000 frs que représentent la quantité restant à votre départ et une estimation forfaitaire de ce qu'il y avait au début de la location [...]". - Marc Favrat gained some fame through his relationship with Princess Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956), former Queen of Greece, who settled in Cannes in the Villa "Rosalba" some years after her expulsion from Romania in 1947 when the Romanian People's Republic was proclaimed. The much younger aspiring artist Favrat became Elisabeth's lover, equerry, and adopted son in the year of her death. - With some handwritten annotations and a few small marginal tears.

A letter of safe conduct issued to the Jewish merchant Jassé Crémieu from the city of Carpentras, valid for a period of six months, during which presentation of this document will prevent Crémieu's arrest by his creditors in Avignon. Said creditors can still have Crémieu summoned and sentenced under criminal law, but only after the six-month period has passed: "Pour Raisons à nous connues, nous accordons à Jassé Crémieu neg[ocian]t juif de la ville de Carpentras sauf conduit et assurance de sa personne pendant le terme de six mois [...] il sera néan-moins permis aux dites créanciers de faire assigner le dite Cremieu et d'obtenir des sentences contrôlées, lesquelles ne pourront être exécutées contre Sa personne pendant lesdites six mois, si terrent pour cause criminelles [...]". - "A group of seven creditors of the Jewish community of Carpentras sued Jassé-Haïn Crémieu, son of the rich former syndic Jassuda-David Crémieu, who was the guarantor for many loans contracted by the former Jewish community. Crémieu was naturalized as French citizen settled in 1785 in Arles. In the year VII his son argued that the naturalization released his father and heirs from any individual responsibility to the creditors of the Jewish community of Carpentras. This argument was so weak that Jassé-Hain Crémieu was ready to turn over to the seven creditors six houses valued before 1789 at 40,000 livres which he owned in the Carpentras ghetto" (Zosa Szajkowski, Jews and the French Revolutions of 1789, 1830 and 1848 [New York, 1970], p. 646). - The rubrum on the verso states that the passport was based on the one accorded by the king. Extremeties slightly browned, with traces of old folds.

Large 8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. On scritta stationery with printed letterhead of the "General Council of the International Working Men's Association, 256, High Holborn, London, W.C.". In German. A political article written for publication in the "Volksstaat", the official newspaper of the Social Democratic Workers' Party, edited by Wilhelm Liebknecht in Leipzig. Marx, writing as "Secretary of the General Council of the International Working Men's Association for Germany", defends himself against false reports published by the "Paris-Journal" concerning supposed anti-German tendencies among the French members of the "International". Only a few weeks earlier, on 26 February, the Treaty of Versailles had ended the Franco-Prussian War of 1871. - "The Paris-Journal, one of the most successful organs of the Paris police press, published an article in its March 14 issue, under the sensational heading 'Le Grand Chef de l'Internationale' [...]. 'He', begins the article, 'is, as everyone knows, a German, what is even worse, a Prussian. He calls himself Karl Marx, lives in Berlin, etc. Well now! This Karl Marx is displeased with the behaviour of the French members of the International. This in itself shows what he is like. He finds that they continually spend too much time dealing with politics and not enough with social questions. This is his opinion, he has formulated it quite categorically in a letter to his brother and friend, Citizen Serraillier, one of the Paris high priests of the International. Marx begs the French members [...] not to lose sight of the fact that their association has a single goal: to organise the work and the future of the workers' societies. But people are disorganising the work rather than organising it, and he believes that the offenders must be reminded again of the association's rules [...]'. In its issue of March 19, the Paris-Journal does indeed have a letter allegedly signed by me which [...] found its way into the London papers. [...] The letter, as I have already explained in The Times, is a brazen fake from beginning to end. That same Paris-Journal and other organs of Paris's 'good Press' are spreading the rumour that the Federal Council of the International in Paris has taken the decision [...] to expel the Germans from the International Working Men's Association. The London dailies hastily grabbed the welcome news and published it in malicious instigating leaders about the suicide of the International at long last. Unfortunately, today The Times contains the following announcement by the General Council of the International Working Men's Association: '[...] Neither the Federal Council of our association in Paris nor any of the Paris sections that it represents have ever dreamed of taking such a decision. The so-called Anti-German League, in so far as it exists at all, is exclusively the work of the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. It was brought to life by the Jockey Club and kept going with the consent of the Academy, the Stock Exchange, some of the bankers and factory owners, and so forth. The working class has never had anything to do with it. The purpose of this calumny is immediately obvious. Shortly before the recent war broke out, the International had to be the scapegoat for all the unpopular events. The same tactics are now being repeated. While Swiss and Prussian papers, e.g., are denouncing it as the originator of the injustices against the Germans in Zürich, the French papers [...] are simultaneously reporting on certain secret meetings of the Internationals in Geneva and Berne, under the chairmanship of the Prussian ambassador, at which the plan is to be devised of handing over Lyon to the united Prussians and the Internationals for the purpose of jointly plundering it.' So much for the statement of the General Council. It is quite natural that the important dignitaries and the ruling classes of the old society who can only maintain their own power and the exploitation of the productive masses of the people by national conflicts and antagonisms, recognise their common adversary in the International Working Men's Association. All and any means are good to destroy it [...]" (transl.). Marx signs in full as "Karl Marx, Secretary of the General Council of the International Working Men's Association for Germany". - The writing of this article coincided with the formation of the Paris Commune, about which Marx later wrote that it would "be forever celebrated as the glorious harbinger of a new society" ("The Civil War in France", MEW 17, p. 362). The article was published in the "Volksstaat" on 29 March 1871 and also in other newspapers of the "International", as well as in the paper "Die Zukunft", edited by Johann Jacoby. - Tiny flaw to lower right corner of the first leaf, resulting in very slight loss to the lower loop of one letter "h". A single ink smudge by Marx's own hand; a few tiny edge tears. The headline has been crossed out by the an editor and replaced by the new title "Erklärung" ("Declaration"). - Complete manuscripts by Karl Marx are of the utmost rarity in the trade. Published under the original title in MEW 17, pp. 298-300, as "An die Redaktionen des 'Volksstaats' und der 'Zukunft'" in MEGA I.22, pp. 5-8 (English ed., pp. 288-290).

Otto berichtet erfreut, dass ihm Ludwig II. endlich erlaubt habe, am Deutsch-Französischen Krieg teilzunehmen. Dieser sei blutig und schrecklich, doch sei am Ende eine Belohnung für die Opfer zu erwarten. Er werde wohl bei Châlons eingesetzt und vielleicht an der Einnahme von Metz beteiligt sein ("le Roi m'a enfin donné la permission de me rendre à l'armée pour prendre part à la campagne contre la France; - c'est une guerre bien sanglante et terrible qui a déjà exigé bien des sacrifices!"). - Otto sollte an der Schlacht von Sedan und an der Belagerung von Paris teilnehmen und 1871 Ludwig II. bei der Kaiserproklamation in Versailles vertreten. Die Kriegsgräuel lösten bei dem psychisch angeschlagenen Prinzen schwere Depressionen aus. 1886 wurde er Nachfolger von Ludwig II., galt jedoch als regierungsunfähig, weshalb die Regierungsgeschäfte von seinem Onkel Luitpold ausgeübt wurden. - Auf Briefpapier mit gepr. Written in exile to a friend about publishing his memoir, the written defence against his prosecution and the seizure of his famous work "Justice in the Revolution and in the Church". Proudhon mentions that the Minister of Justice, Adolphe Crémieux (1796-1880), informed him that he had five days from the date he received his sentence to prepare his appeal; he hopes soon to be able to put an end to this "comedy": "Mon Mémoire est sous presse [...] Crémieux [...] m'écrit entr'autres choses ceci: que j'ai cinq jours, à dater du jour de la signification de l'arrêt, pour former mon opposition [...] J'ai dit que je voulois finir cette comédie […]". - Refusing to make any changes to his memoir apart from the preface and the occasional note, pointing out that it was written for any eventuality, be it good or bad, peacee or war, discussing the prospect of an amnesty following the Italian War, which would greatly please him but would not change his attitude towards the government nor his influential book, and voicing his distaste for the "arbitrary fantasies of our imperial world": "Quant-au mémoire même, aucun chang[e]ment n'y sera fait: Les événements ne modifieront que l'avis au lecteur, tout au plus quelque note. Mon mémoire est fait pour toutes les éventualités, bonnes et mauvaises, pacifiques ou guerrières. Ce n'est pas tout. Voici que les journaux parlent d'amnestie pour le 15 août, applicable surtout aux délits de presse. Si le hasard faisait que j'y fuisse compris à coup sûr je m'en féliciterais, pour ma personne et pour tous les miens: mais cela ne changerait pas la position quant au livre et quant au système suivi par la magistrature et le gouvernement [...] Il faut que dans tous les cas je confirme, par ma défense, l'effet produit par le livre, et que je dégoûte un peu notre monde impérial de ses fantaisies d'arbitraire [...]". - A small hole and tear towards the end of the first page, hardly affecting legibility. To a friend about their mutual acquaintance Félix Stappaerts (1812-85), editor of the "Revue Britannique Belge", who had promised Leopold, Duke of Brabant and heir apparent to the Belgian throne, to use his journal to lobby for the construction of a Belgian fleet, and attempted to convince Alphonse-Nicolas Lebègue (1814-85), the editor of "L'Office de Publicité", to do the same, efforts which led to accusations of his having abandoned his political independence as a journalist to be levelled against him: "M. Stappaerts, de vos amis, est directeur de la Revue Britannique Belge [...] Dernièrement, Monseigneur le duc de Brabant, qui caresse le projet de créer en Belgique une marine de l'Etat, fit prendre 50 abonnement[s] de la Revue en demandant à M. Stappaerts s'il ne lui serait point agréable de défendre, dans son excellent recueil, le projet de marine de Son Altesse. M. Stappaerts répondit, en acceptant les abonnements, que certainement rien n'allait mieux aux idées de la Revue et à son impartialité personnelle, et qu'il était hereux de faire quelque chose pour le bien de l'Etat, et le service de Monseigneur. Là-dessus, Monseigneur d'exprimer sa reconnaissance, en ajoutant qu'il serait tout à fait content, si, par l'entremise de M. Stappaerts, il pouvait obtenir pareille faveur de l'Office de publicité [...] Engagement pris, le Britannique vient donc trouver l'Officieur: Bonne nouvelle, dit-il, je vous apporte cent abonnements. Que me faudra-t-il faire? Presque rien, prendre parti dans l'Office pour la marine belge comme je le fais dans La Revue. À ces mots, la dignité du libraire-éditeur monte sur ses grands chevaux: L'Office est indépendant, nous voulons garder notre position. Written in exile to the lawyer Gustave Chaudey (1817-71) in Paris fearing the imminent seizure and auction of his and his wife's possessions at their Paris home, hoping she will be able to secure his manuscripts and notes, as well as his collection of the Revue du Peuple, and a Latin Bible with his handwritten annotations: "A présent j'ai à vous consulter sur deux choses: 1. Ne va-t-on pas aller rue d'Enfer, 82, opérer une siasie, mettre à l'encan les logues de ma femme et les miennes, et étaler au grand jour ma vieille misère? [...] J'ai, parmi mes livres, la collection complète du Peuple, etc., et une Bible in 4o, latine, chargée de notes marginales de ma main, que je ne céderais pas pour mille écus [...] En tout cas, et pour éviter l'indiscrétion de ces bons messieurs de la police, je serais bien aise que ma femme mît en sûreté manuscrite, carnets de notes, Peuple, et Bible [...]". - Inquiring about legal options to fight his conviction following the prosecution and confiscation of his famous work "Justice in the Revolution and in the Church", pointing out that even a man sentenced to death and executed can be rehabilitated if the truth comes out later, about his intention to publish a memoir, a plan impeded by the authorities who will not give him sufficient time or listen to his claim that several laws were violated in his conviction, and wishing for a sentence authorising him to publish his memoir in Paris: "Par exemple, il y a moyen de réhabiliter un homme condamné à mort et exécuté, si la vérité se reconnaît plus tard.
