[Jesuits].
Breve ragguaglio delle virtù, e morte del Pre Christoforo Storani della Comp.a di Giesù. N. p., first half of the 18th century.
4to. Italian manuscript on paper. 19 pp. Life of Cristoforo Storani (1682-1733), a Jesuit of noble birth from Ancona who served as rector of the Collegium Ragusianum (Dubrovnik) from 1719 to 1721. During his term, the later Jesuit priest and polymath Rugjer Josip (Roger Joseph) Boscovich studied at the Collegium Ragusianum. - As is typical for the genre, the text traces the biography of the recently deceased brother in broad strokes, focusing on his character, virtues, events of religious relevance, and death. We learn that even when he was among brothers who slept in beds, Storani always "put his mattress on the floor" and took his rest "without sheets or duvets", although he slept only little and spent "the better part of the night reading and studying". To preserve his "angelic chastity", Storani "never looked a woman in the face" and never visited women "except for taking confession". Ahead of his death on 18 April 1733, Storani was called to Rome to accompany the "Maestro dei Novizi". The Superior General Franz Retz and other important Jesuits were present at his deathbed and assisted in his last rites. The vita closes with the immediate aftermath of Storani's death and the veneration bestowed upon him. The mourners entered Storani's room "as if they entered the room of a saint", while a Jesuit who learned of his death exclaimed, "Saint Christopher pray for us". - With very slight damage due to ink corrosion and old water stains. Small 8vo. 1 page. In French. Apparently to Juste Vernouillet in Paris, director of the publishing house Lachatre & Co. in the absence of Maurice Lachatre, who was still exiled in San Sebastian, Spain, for his role in the Paris Commune. Marx addresses Vernouillet as "cher citoyen" and sends him the next 31 pages of Joseph Roy's translated manuscript of "Le Capital" (up to p. 472), with his own extensive revisions, for typesetting. He also requests "100 copies of fascicle II, as well as 30 copies of fascicle I, which you will add to my account". - The first livraison of the French edition had appeared in August 1872, the second was delayed until early February 1873. In January 1872, Marx and Lachatre had not even signed their publication contract. Although Marx was not usually prone to misdating letters at the beginning of the year (a lapse more common in Engels's letters), he was at that moment seriously overworked with revising Roy's translation for Lachatre's ongoing publication, and simultaneously completing the revised second German edition for his publisher Otto Meissner in Hamburg. Quite recently he had complained to his correspondent Friedrich Adolph Sorge, "Because of the French translation, which makes me more work than if I had to do it without the translator, I am so overworked that I have not been able to write to you" (21 Dec. 1872), and still a month after the present letter, he wrote to Friedrich Bolte in very similar vein that "the revision of the French translation is causing me more work than if I had done the whole translation myself" (12 February 1873). - Slightly wrinkled and slight edge damage. Lahure, that he would send him more copy. "Unfortunately, I fell ill and needed to stay in bed until yesterday. I was thus prevented from correcting the manuscript, and I could only resume work after a few days. This is an unpleasant incident". Marx further inquires after the latest postal address of Joseph Roy (1830-1916), his Bordeaux-based translator. - Severely overworked with revising Roy's translation for Lachatre's ongoing publication of "Le Capital" and completing the revised second German edition for his publisher Otto Meissner in Hamburg, the final corrected proofs of which he had sent Meißner at the beginning of the month, Marx had fallen ill in April and would suffer from intermittent bouts of headaches and insomnia until August. - Traces of old folds. To his publisher Maurice Lachâtre, who in late 1873 had moved from San Sebastian, Spain, to his new exile in Belgium, as he was still wanted by the French police for his role in the Paris Commune. Marx writes that he took the waters at Karlsbad for five weeks and "will be leaving Germany in a few days to return to London. I believe that my health is restored and that I will now be in a condition to complete the French edition once and for all. If I pass through Belgium - I have not yet decided on my travel route - I will be happy to go and see you". With one textual correction by Marx. In a postscript, he adds that he just read in the newspaper "La Patrie" a review of "Le Capital" by a certain Gaussen: "This gentleman never had the book in his hand. He dares to quote, in quotation marks, entire passages which are his own creation and which he has the impudence to attribute to me". - Suffering from insomnia and headaches due to severe overwork, mainly from labouring on "Capital", Marx spent a month from 19 August to 21 September at Karlsbad. Staying at the Hotel Germania, he frequently met the Social Democrat Louis Kugelmann and his family, but the relationship cooled after a falling-out earlier in September. - Traces of old horizontal fold. A few wrinkles and creases, especially in the margins; some old paper flaws in the lower half of the leaf, mostly confined to the lower margin and lower right edge, but no loss to text. To his brother Charles Proudhon with advice not to open a spice shop, which would prove a financial liability, and the suggestion to lease parts of his house instead; describing his appointment at the ministry the other day, where he was formally assured that he would not be prevented from writing, and hoping soon to receive permission to publish the "Revue du Peuple": "Une boutique d'epicerie? Tous les villages en sont pleins, et tu n'y gagneras que le plaisir d‘avoir des billets à payer, et des échéances toujours trop proches. Ne peux-tu trier de ta maison quelque petit revenu? Tu pourrais avoir un, deux, même trois pensionnaires, si tu étais dans un pays plus peuplé [...] Hier [...] j'ai été mandé au ministère, où l'on m'a dit formellement qu'on n'entendrait pas m‘empêcher d'écrire. Probablement même que je vais être autorisé à faire une Revue, la Revue du Peuple. Cela pourrait me remettre sur pied. Dieu le veuille, car j'ai grand besoin de me remonter, et je ne pourrais pas rester longtemps comme je suis [...]". - About his family's need for a new maid who will tend to the two children, do household chores, and go for walks with his wife; hoping he might know a suitable girl, as their former maid is quitting to start an apprenticeship, pointing out that they can pay up to 15 Francs depending on the girl's skills, and that she should go out as little as possible as they are not keen on love affairs: "La fille que nous avons, une nommée Thérèse [...] nous quitte pour entrer en apprentissage. Elle trouve une maison où elle gagnera le même gage, et par dessus le marché, un état. Nous avons donc besoin de la remplacer. Connaîtrais-tu quelque jeune fille [...] qui ait envie de voir Paris? Nous pouvons payer de 9 à 12 fr. par mois, 15 au plus, selon les talents de la personne. Le service n‘est pas dûr, mais assez attirrant: il y a deux petits enfants. Promenade de temps en temps avec ma femme, et sorties le plus rares possibles: nous ne voulons pas souffrir d‘amourettes […]". - Slightly spotted.

4to. Altogether (1+½+¾ =) 2¼ pages on 5 pages. On White House headed notepaper. Letters of appreciation from President Roosevelt to Hon. Powell Clayton, who had been appointed in 1897 as the first Ambassador of the United States to Mexico by President McKinley, when that post was elevated to an embassy post. - 1) "If, as the time approaches, you think seriously of resigning your position as Ambassador, please come to no conclusion without writing me well in advance and letting me have time to communicate with you. The result in Arkansas was to my mind absolutely conclusive as showing that the voters were with the regular organization. How I wish we could get a Republican Congressman from Arkansas! [...]" (4 Oct. 1902). - 2) The second letter asks Clayton to attend a meeting of the National Committee the following January - "then I should like to talk in full with you over the whole situation" (20 July 1903). - 3) "Let me now thank you for having consented to stay in until the end of this term. I appreciate your having foregone your desire to return to private life [...]" (26 Oct. 1904). - Clayton resigned in May 1905. "When he retired from the Mexican embassy, [he] became a resident of Washington DC, although he maintained various business enterprises in Arkansas and continued to be a major power within the local Republican Party. He died in Washington DC on August 25, 1914, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery" (Encyclopedia of Arkansas). - With autograph amendments and additional note of congratulations, one letter with U.S. Embassy receipt stamp on one page. Creasing, light dust-staining to rectos where folded. Correspondence from Clayton to Roosevelt from this period is held in the Roosevelt Papers at the Library of Congress. The present letters have been retained in the family until now.

One of the most prominent pieces from the famous autograph collection of Carl Künzel, written on Goethe's 80th birthday: "Chaque jour est un bien que du ciel je reçoi, / Profitons aujourdhui de celui qu'il nous donne; / Il n'appartient pas plus aux jeunes gens q'uà moi, / Et celui de demain n'appartient à Personne" (a verse written in 1699 by the eighty-year-old poet François de Maucroix: "Every day is a gift I receive from Heaven / Let us enjoy today that which it bestows on me. / It belongs no more to the young than to me, / And tomorrow belongs to no one"). - If one is to believe an anonymous report published in the London Athenaeum, then Künzel, barely 21 years old in 1829, "came to Weimar, entered Goethe's house, and, with all his personal and national naiveté, asked the great man's valet to hide him somewhere in the hall, that he ('a Suabian' as he called himself when the domestic questioned him about his name, &c.) might only 'have a peep' at the celebrated poet, who, he was told, would soon pass for his usual promenade. The attendant complied with Herr Kunzel's wish, and then answered his master's bell; but returned almost instantly with the message that 'his Excellency' wanted to see the traveller. Herr Kunzel, not dreaming of such an honour, felt rather bewildered; but, following the servant, who gently pushed him into 'his Excellency's' presence, he a minute later, saw the Author of Faust standing before him, tall and majestic, but stretching out a friendly hand and benignly addressing him with the words - 'The Suabian is not only to see me; I, too, will see the Suabian.' A conversation about Suabia and Schiller’s sister (a patronizing friend of Herr Kunzel’s) followed, at the end of which the tribute of one or more autographs was granted. These autographs of Goethe became the nucleus of Herr Kunzel’s present collection" (no. 1452, 25 August 1855, p. 979). Ultimately, Künzel's collection was to comprise not only this Goethean French quotation, but also a quatrain in German, Goethe's garden hat, his breakfast cup, and a quill. - Carl Künzel (1808-77), then a travelling salesman for the Heilbronn-based Rauch paper factory, kept an autograph album on his many journeys; other signatories includedBrentano, Eichendorff, Goethe, Grillparzer, Hölderlin, Mörike, and Uhland. "In 1936 it was dispersed at auction, according to its owner's wish; no buyer had stepped forward who wished to acquire the book as a whole" (cf. Mecklenburg, p. 54). Like his uncle, Carl Künzel's nephew Wilhelm (1819-96) was a passionate collector of autographs who increased the collection to "the ultimate scope of 15,233 items [...], which were auctioned after his death by List und Francke in Leipzig between 1896 and 1898 versteigert wurden" (cf. Scheible, p. 518). "These two collectors, uncle and nephew, are of especial importance for the history of the autograph business, for today's collectors and antiquarians still encounter at every step the traces of their worldly doings" (cf. To the Russian artist Viktor Vasnetsov, asking to be allowed to make a copy of Vasentsov's "Virgin and Child" and mentioning a visit with Chekhov: "A friend of mine who has recently buried his wife would like to place in a chapel above her grave a copy of your 'Madonna and Child'. Be so kind as to tell me - is it possible to copy it? Could you possibly recommend one of your students, a person who is more able than the others to convey the beauty and soul of the original? How much, approximately, would such a copy cost - a copy the size of a human height or a bit smaller? Also, can a painting in oil retain its original integrity in a cold chapel? For answer to all of the questions - two of which are foolish, I presume - I will come to you around the 26th or 27th, and most definitely with Anton Pavlovich [Chekhov] [...]" (transl.). - Viktor Vasnetsov was a celebrated artist, particularly for mythological and historical subjects. In his later career he was responsible for a number of fresco cycles in churches, including in St Vladimir's Cathedral in Kiev and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Warsaw. Only two letters from Gorky to Vasenetsov are known. - In perfect condition.

Vorlesungsankündigung "für das bevorstehende Winter-Semester", in dem er über Harmonielehre lesen und Orgelspiel unterrichten wolle. - "Nach seiner Promotion zum Doctor der Philosophie begleitete er den Orientalisten Bernstein auf einer längeren Reise nach Italien und wurde nach seiner Rückkehr 1843 Lehrer der Tonkunst am akademischen Institut für Kirchenmusik zu Breslau, welches Amt er auch nach seiner Anstellung als Lehrer an dem erwähnten Gymnasium (1853) bis kurz vor seinem Tode beibehielt. Bei den "zweistimmigen Liedern" wird es sich um "5 Gesänge für Bass oder Bariton, op. 10" gehandelt haben, die 1838 bei Hofmeister in Leipzig erschienen waren. - Stellenweise unbedeutend fleckig und mit kleinen Randläsuren.

To Friedrich Sebastian Mayer, with instructions for the singer who performed the role of Don Pizarro at the premiere of "Fidelio" (in the original première of 20 November 1805 as well as in that of the reworked version of 29 March 1806): "Hier der Ite Akt - diesen Abend den Zweiten - wo eigentlich nur wenige Veränderungen gemacht worden - sobald beyde Akte geschrieben, bitte ich sogleich, mir sie wieder zu zustellen" ("Here is the 1st Act - the second will follow this evening - which in fact contains only few changes - when both have been copied, please return them to me directly"). - The reception of Beethoven's first "Fidelio" version had been lukewarm; the second had enjoyed greater success. However, it was not until 1814, when Beethoven produced a third version of his only opera, that the work met with resounding cheers. Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient, one of the greatest tragic sopranos of the 19th century, who had accepted the role of Leonore in 1822, was instrumental for the opera's ever-increasing popularity. When Vienna's State opera, destroyed by Allied bombs during WWII, re-opened in 1955, it was Beethoven's "liberation opera" that was chosen to mark the occasion. - Slightly browned and wrinkled, overall in good condition. My admiration and respect for 'Uncle Yobo' as our dear mutual and disrespectfully dutiful friend Clinton Gray Fisk calls him can with difficulty have bounds set to it. His complete aloofness from the fashionable tricks of the moment ... démodé no sooner than they are set on paper ... Die Tochter des Schauspielers und Regisseurs Rudolf Retty debütierte 1890 am Deutschen Theater in Berlin; am Berliner Lessing-Theater konnte sie als Franziska in Kleists "Minna von Barnhelm" ihren ersten größeren Erfolg erzielen. Sie kam 1903 an das Wiener Burgtheater, wo sie wenige Jahre danach zur Hofschauspielerin aufstieg. Neben zahlreichen klassischen und komischen Rollen am Theater spielte die Großmutter Romy Schneiders seit 1930 auch in einigen Filmen, so etwa in Franz Antels "Der Kongreß tanzt" (1930).

"Zur freundlichen Erinnerung [...]". - Margit Angerer debütierte 1926 in Wien als Verdis Leonora, gefolgt von mehr als 160 Auftritten in tragenden Rollen an der Wiener Staatsoper von 1927 bis 1935; vor allem als Octavian im "Rosenkavalier" machte sie einen Karrieresprung. So schrieb Hugo von Hofmannsthal in einem Brief an Richard Strauss: "Die (Schenker)-Angerer als Octavian ist reizend und immer besser; überhaupt die beste Besetzung, seit die Oper existiert. Unbedingt die Angerer nach Salzburg mitnehmen [...]" (Brief v. 7. V. 1929, Schmidt II, 2856). - Mit Spuren alter Montage. Der obere Rand etwas unschön abgetrennt.

Chung Ling Soo [i. e., William Ellsworth Robinson], American illusionist (1861-1918).

Portrait postcard, signed in ink "Chung Ling Soo", with Chinese characters adjacent, depicting the magician head and shoulders, his head shaved and wearing a queue, in an embroidered jacket. This image was also used as the frontispiece for the programme for the Alhambra Theatre, Paris, in September 1912. - W. E. Robinson was an American illusionist famous for creating the persona of a Chinese magician, Chung Ling Soo, an act he performed both on and off the stage. Dressed in traditional Chinese attire, he shaved his head, wore his hair in a queue and created an elaborate "back story" for himself. He never spoke onstage unless in broken English and communicated to journalists via an interpreter. He became highly popular and one of the highest-paid vaudeville performers, helped no doubt by the publicity resulting from his feud with a real Chinese magician, Ching Ling Foo, who claimed he had stolen his act. Soo was most famous for his "Condemned to Death by the Boxers" trick and was fatally injured by a bullet during a performance of the act at Wood Green Empire in 1918. After his death, the public was shocked to learn that he was not Chinese.

Rita Georg, als junge Sängerin von dem Komponisten Franz Lehár entdeckt und gefördert, hatte ihre erste Filmrolle in dem Stummfilm "Das Gebot der Liebe" (1919). Sie war 1926 am Wiener Burgtheater in Karl Farkas' Revue "Journal der Liebe" und als erste Sonja an der Seite von Richard Tauber in Lehárs 1927 uraufgeführtem "Zarewitsch" zu sehen. Größere Bekanntheit erlangte sie als Mary in Emmerich Kálmáns "Die Herzogin von Chicago" im Theater an der Wien. Ab 1933 verlegte sie ihre Wirkungsstätte nach Frankreich und später in die Niederlande.

Adele Kern wechselte nach ihrem Debüt 1924 an der Bayerischen Staatsoper (als Olympia in "Hoffmanns Erzählungen") als erste Koloratursopranistin nach Frankfurt am Main. 1927 folgte ihr Debüt an der Staatsoper in Wien in der Rolle der Zerbinetta in Strauss' "Adriadne auf Naxos", einer ihrer späteren Paraderollen. Zudem sang Kern bei den Salzburger Festspielen, an den Staatsopern von Berlin und München sowie in der Uraufführung von Franz Lehárs "Schön ist die Welt".

Ein Albumblatt mit Widmung an die Tochter sowie spätere Mitarbeiterin und Nachlassverwalterin des Wiener Malers Franz Martin Haberditzl, Magdalena (1919-2017): "Herzliche Grüße Frl. Lene Haberditzl von Lili Marberg". - Lili Marberg sorgte nach Auftritten und Engagements an verschiedenen Theatern (Zwickau, Elberfeld-Barmen, Thalia-Theater in Hamburg) am Münchner Schauspielhaus ab 1903 für Furore in Oscar Wildes "Salome" und wurde nach diesem Publikumserfolg als Nachfolgerin von Helene Odilon an das Deutsche Volkstheater in Wien geholt. Sie wechselte schließlich ans Wiener Burgtheater, dem sie bis 1950 angehörte. Marberg spielte die weibliche Hauptrolle in den Uraufführungen von Arthur Schnitzlers "Das weite Land" und George Bernard Shaws "Pygmalion". - Das kleinere Blatt mit abgerundeten Ecken.

Zurück in Berlin spielte sie am Lessingtheater und dann ab 1913 am Wiener Burgtheater, wo ihr 1926 der Titel der Kammerschauspielerin verliehen wurde. Maria Mayen war die Großmutter des Schauspielers Christoph Waltz und heiratete in zweiter Ehe ihren Schauspielkollegen Emmerich Reimers.

Elisabeth Ortner-Kallina trat mit 18 Jahren ins Ensemble des Wiener Burgtheaters ein, wo sie im Laufe der Jahre weit über hundert verschiedene Rollen verkörpern sollte, darunter zahlreiche große Charakterrollen wie die Titelrolle in Schillers "Jungfrau von Orléans", die Ismene in Sophokles' "Antigone", Lady Milford in "Kabale und Liebe" und Sittah in Lessings "Nathan der Weise". Aus der Ehe mit Oskar Werner ging eine gemeinsame Tochter hervor.

Sie trat in Stumm- und Tonfilmen stets als Nebendarstellerin u. a. in "Konfetti" (1936) und "Der liebe Augustin" (1940) sowie mehrmals in Wiener Filmen auf.

Er spielte dann an den Stadttheatern Altona und Leipzig und kam 1918 ans Wiener Burgtheater. Er war in Liebhaber- und Charakterrollen zu sehen und mit der Schauspielerin Maria Mayen verheiratet.

4to. 2½ pp. A long, highly interesting letter written from Haiti, during the early months of the French Royal expedition for the measurement of the meridian arc. - In 1734 Godin had been requested to submit to the French chief minister the best means of measuring the exact figure of the Earth, and proposed sending expeditions to the Equator and the polar sea. The plan was approved, and three members of the Académie, Pierre Bouguer, Charles de La Condamine, and Godin, were sent on the mission to Peru. They sailed from La Rochelle on 16 May 1735 and remained in Haiti for six months, taking observations. They would arrive in Quito in February 1736, cross the Andes, and remain for two years. - In his letter, Godin discusses mémoires read at the Academy, in particular that of Maupertuis: "Des deux memoires lus à notre occasion dans l'Academie, celuy de M. de Maupertuis, me toucher les plus. M. Bouguer avoit fait apeuprès la mesme chose autant que j'en peux juger n'en ayant vu qu'un, des le temps que nous etions à Rochefort. Il me montra pendant les 8 premiers jours de la Traversée ce qu'il avoit trouvé la dessus et nous remismes à une plus ample lecture dans l'occasion. Nous sçavons donc quel degré de precision nous devons esperer en prenant toutes les precautions possibles. Le mémoire de M. Cassini, nous l'avions fait entre nous des Paris mesme et nous devions chercher une occasion de le pratiquer. J'avois proposé cette methode à nos Messieurs et nommé une Isle fort propre à l'execution ; mais la difference dans les Inclinaisons n'est pas à beaucoup près celle que vous marquez qu'a trouvée M. Cassini et il s'en faut qu'on tire de cette observation la precision qu'on aura d'ailleurs. Je n'ay pensé la pratiquer aussi que comme quelques autres assez peu precises mais qui doivent cependant estre examinées suivant la commodité des lieux. Il y a comme cela quelques autres desseins qu'on pourra m'enlever, ce qui me fait repentir de n'avoir pas publié ou du moins remis au Secretariat de l'Academie les differentes idées que j'ay eues à l'occasion de ce Voyage. J'ay déjà perdu quelque chose qui valloit mieux que cela [...] Toutes les observations astronomiques que nous avons pu faire pendant un sejour de trois mois se reduisent aux hauteurs meridiennes des astres et aux Eclipses des satellites de [Jupiter]. Hedin, Sven, Asienforscher (1856-1952).

1 S. 8vo. An einen Peter Krauß mit Dank "für Ihren lieben Brief! Bitte grüssen Sie recht herzlich die liebe Schwester Martha. Herrn Dr Dipper werde ich nie vergessen können. Als Arzt war er viel grösser als alle die der P.U.M.C. [...]". - Edmund Dipper war in den 1920er Jahren Chefarzt am Deutschen Hospital in Peking, Schwester Martha wird wohl eine der Diakonissen, die als Pflegepersonal dort tätig waren. Hedin selbst hatte in den Jahren 1927 bis 1935 die internationale und interdisziplinäre Chinesisch-Schwedische Expedition geleitet, bei der die Mongolei, Xinjiang und Tibet erforscht wurden. Das Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) war über Paul H. Stevenson, der am PUMC lehrte, mit der Expedition verbunden, die er als Konsulent betreute, ohne selbst an ihr teilzunehmen. - Geringe Gebrauchsspuren.
