Addressed to future Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. Light original horizontal folds. On "United States Senate" letterhead Walsh transmits present a signed copy of a recently-delivered speech. Accompanied by aforementioned speech an 8vo 8-page "Congressional Record" offprint titled "Reorganization of Federal Judiciary" being the text of the senator's radio address delivered at Carnegie Hall in New York on March 12 1937. In this fiery speech Walsh denounces President Roosevelt's controversial court-packing scheme. Signed large and bold near the bottom of the self-cover along with "Compliments of." Walsh was a well-known critic of FDR's plan to enlarge the Supreme Court making this signed memento particularly desireable. unknown

This ABC news reporter entered diplomacy when he acted as an intermediary during the Cuban Missile Crisis helping divert a disaster; in 1971 President Nixon named him his foreign affairs advisor; from 1973 to 1975 he served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Signed Printed Document 8" X 10" 7pp recto and verso; 4 leaves New York NY 1974 December 6. Near fine. Stapled at upper left as issued; two faint horizontal original folds. Standard mimeographed press release issued by the "United States Delegation to the General Assembly" titled "Statement by Ambassador John Scali. on Strengthening the Role of the United Nations." In a blank area at top center of the first page the ambassador boldly pens "with best wishes / from / John Scali" in black fineline. In this speech Scali deplores "the growing tendency of this Organization to adopt one-sided unrealistic resolutions that cannot be implemented" as well as "a new threat -- an arbitrary disregard of United Nations Rules even of its Charter." He goes on to cite numerous instances of both closing with: ".we must now renew our commitment to the central principles of tolerance and harmony upon which the United Nations charter was built. We must redouble our efforts to use this Organization as the world's ultimate instrument for compromise and negotiation. I pledge my nation to these efforts." Most unusual in this form. unknown

This Slovakian immigrant was elected a Democratic representative to Congress from Chicago in 1907 and on April 1 1934 became the "Dean of the House" longest-serving member a post he held for 18 years 7 months and 5 days -- the longest anyone has held that post. TLS 1p 8" X 10�" Washington DC 1939 August 5. Addressed to Gerald Salters. Near fine. On "House of Representatives U.S." letterhead Sabath as chairman of the Committee on Rules attempts to appease an angry constituent regarding "the 30 day furlough of W.P.A. workers. we have done all in our power to eliminate the lay-off provision but due to the solid Republican vote combined with 30 or 40 Democrats who are opposed to President Roosevelt's policies and the Administration our efforts were in vain. Nevertheless I shall continue my fight for the elimination of the provision." Although the Committee on Rules that Sabath chaired from 1937 on was powerful he was considered a weak leader who squabbled with the House leadership and failed to effectively steer the committee -- thus it's not surprising that New Deal programs of which he was a strong supporter suffered setbacks such as this under his committee. Accompanied by an outstanding original 6�" X 8�" glossy black and white news agency 1947 photograph an amusing closeup showing the cigar-clutching octogenarian puckering up to blow out the single large candle on an 81st birthday cake. Near fin -- a sharp high quality image. The original mimeographed newsprint caption is still present and reads in part: "Representative Adolph Sabath. is about to blow out the single candle that adorned his birthcake as he celebrated his 81st anniversary yesterday. Re. Sabath who is now in his 41st year as a member of the House of Representatives came to the U.S. 65 years ago from Czechoslovakia as a poor immigrant boy." 8 August 1920 1920. Blank-page autograph book. 11.5 cm x 9 cm black fabricoid binding with the word "Autographs" gilt-stamped to cover marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Written on front free endpaper: "Canadian Victoria Cross Winners. Canadian National Exhibition. Toronto. 28/8/1920." The Victoria Cross is the highest honour in the Canadian honour system for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. It even takes precedence over the Order of Canada. The Canadian National Exhibition celebrated Canada's wartime achievement bringing together 26 winners of the Victoria Cross and their families. Organized in cooperation with the Veterans Re-Union Council large numbers of veterans attended the gathering of VC winners. In his opening day address Sir Auckland Geddes noted the "imperishable glory of the Canadian Corps." There are 17 recipient autographs and 11 signatures of "next of kin" recipients. Some name their regiment home town and rank. Quest for Serenity: journal of a Film-Maker
New York: Filmmaker's Cinematheque 1965 Issue 1 of Monograph series from Film-makers' Cinematheque. Inscribed by author on title page # 127 of 1000 copies. Transcripts from Markopoulos' diary regarding the filming of "Serenity"and the subsequent problems "Serenity it was based on a novel by Elias Venezis depicting the aftermath of the Greco-Turkish conflict of 1920-21. Revolving around the symbolic image of a rose garden the film was to take place largely in the memory of its principal female character the wife of an idealistic young physician exiled in the postwar diaspora. Color shooting finally began in 1958 under trying conditions some scenes could only be filmed in one take with a soundtrack recorded in English Greek German and Russian. A first version was then edited in Rome. After that a dire truly Byzantine struggle with the film's producers ensued that lasted over two years exhausting and discouraging the filmmaker. During that time he continued to work on scenarios three of which would be the bases of his major works of the 1960s. A trucated version of Serenity was finally premiered at Spoleto in 1961 and a longer edit was shown three times in the U.S. before disappearing entirely forfeited by the director in return for his fee.
