‎80 pp.Intéressante correspondance d’un jeune voyageur sur les côtes de Syrie et d'Egypte.A Brest, Toustain se prépare à embarquer sur la corvette "La Créole" commandée par son oncle Auguste qui, après un passage à Toulon, doit aller prendre le commandement de la station du Levant. Au mois d’août 1841, la corvette est basée au quartier général de Beyrouth. Toustain a alors déjà visité une grande partie de la Palestine « et la fameuse Jérusalem » où il a accompagné le consul de France de Damas qui allait en mission à Jaffa. Résolu « de tout voir et de bien voir », il a visité et prié dans tous les lieux saints. Avec une escorte d’Arabes voleurs, il a traversé les montages de Judée et le désert de Jéricho jusqu’à la Mer Morte. Il a également vu Tripoli. "La Créole" a ensuite accompagné l’amiral de Susse jusque dans le canal de Chypre. Toustain aime faire des excursions à cheval mais en octobre cela est plus difficile car « les Druses et les Maronites se font une guerre acharnée » dans les montagnes du Liban. Il craint que "La Créole" ne garde indéfiniment la station de Syrie. Ses distractions sont toujours la lecture, les promenades à cheval et quelques visites. Il rapporte un incident entre un officier français et des soldats turcs. Le 5 juillet 1842, il vient d’achever « un des voyages les plus intéressants que l’on puisse faire en Syrie. J’ai traversé tout le Liban et l’anti-Liban et j’ai été passer 8 jours à Damas, une des plus belles villes d’Orient. […] les intérieurs des maisons y sont d’un luxe digne des contes des mille et une nuits, et puis ce mouvement d’Arabes, de caravanes, de chevaux magnifiques, etc. tout cela éblouit […] Je me débrouille assez bien en arabe et je voyage comme un véritable arabe, accompagné d’une espèce de bédouin qui soigne ma jument en route »… En août, la rade de Beyrouth reçoit à nouveau la flotte de l’amiral de Susse: « sous sa coupe immédiate, il faut un peu ralentir l’ardeur des excursions, et se contenter pour le moment des promenades de Beyrouth, et cela en strict uniforme, ce qui les rend moins agréables ». Il va repartir pour Damas où se trouvera toute la caravane de la Mecque, « c’est elle qui apporte de Perse les objets les plus curieux ». Il parle du domestique égyptien qui est à son service et qu’il compte ramener en France, de la petite maison qu’il a louée, de la mort de sa jument… En avril 1843, il quitte les côtes du Liban pour l’Égypte où il est reçu à merveille, il navigue sur le Nil et visite Le Caire, mais il réserve le récit de son voyage pour son retour en France en juin après la quarantaine qui aura lieu à Toulon.On joint une minute autographe signée, Toulon 20 juin 1843, sollicitant du ministre de la marine un congé de trois mois, ainsi qu’une cinquantaine de lettres à lui adressées par ses parents, 1841-1843, la plupart datées de Tilly ou de Vaux en Normandie et quelques-unes d’Italie où sa mère séjourne régulièrement (environ 260 pages)‎

Contemporary half calf with giltstamped spine title, upper cover monogrammed "M. L." in gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges red, layered with a gilt semé of crosses pattées. A charming, meticulously drawn, coloured and calligraphed historical atlas created by the young French aristocrat Marie Lichtenstein as a memento of her graduating class at the prestigious Collège Royale in Aix-en-Provence. The historical and genealogical tables are enclosed within red, blue, yellow, and green borders; a small crown is stamped beside the names of rulers . They include the dissolution of the Empire of Charlemagne, the history of the Egyptians, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians, and Romans, and the genealogies of the European ruling houses, including the "Dynastie Napoléonienne", several of the Byzantine Imperial families, and ultimately, their heirs and successors as Emperor of Constantinople, the Ottoman dynasty. The maps show the "Invasion des Barbares au 5 siècle" (with the "Arabes ou Sarasins" from the "Golfe Arabique" conquering Peria and southern Spain), a map of Europe showing the Empire of Charlemagne, Germany after the Treaty of Westfalia in 1648, and the administrative divisions of contemporary Spain. - Corners bumped, otherwise finely preserved.‎

Sehr erfolgreich wirkte er auch als Intendant der Vereinigten Pariser Opernhäuser (1973-80), die er zu neuem Ansehen führte.‎

Reliure vélin jaune d'ép., taches et griffures sur les plats, 3 petits dessins à l'encre sur le premier plat (enfant et motifs d'architecture), coiffes et coins usés, mors fendu. Le texte est entièrement calligraphié, avec de riches arabesques dans les marges dans lesquelles figurent des têtes et des oiseaux. Le nom du calligraphe (LIEUTAUD) et la date (1775) apparaissent dans plusieurs pages. Nom inscrit sur la dernière page de garde (Citoyen Cabrol D'Aumeran à la place de Chaumery d'Aubagne).
