Catalogue of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University, Volume IV. MSS 481-485
Hardback, XXVIII+616 p., 281 b/w ill., 150 x 230 mm. ISBN 9782503514406. Volume IV is devoted to the items in the Beinecke's general collection with the shelf numbers 481, 482, 483, 484, and 485, each a discrete collection of manuscript fragments. The text consists of 285 entries -- describing single leaves, groups of leaves, or pieces of leaves -- of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts written between the seventh and sixteenth centuries in Western Europe. They are, for the most part, the battered remnants of otherwise lost books from the Middle Ages. Almost all of the fragments included in this catalogue are in Latin, although there are a few items in Middle High German and in Hebrew. The two larger groups of fragments described here (MS 481 and MS 482) were assembled originally as a palaeographical collection documenting a wide range of Latin bookscripts used during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Included are specimens in Uncial, Visigothic, Merovingian, Beneventan, and humanist scripts, as well as numerous examples of Caroline minuscule and Gothic book hands, with a particular richness in eleventh- and twelfth-century manuscripts from Southern Germany. The fragments described in the catalogue are almost all derived from books. There are manuscripts of biblical texts (with and without glosses), classical and patristic authors, exegetical treatises, sermons, liturgical works, monastic rules, medieval encyclopedias, legal works, scholastic treatises, schoolbooks, grammatical works, medieval chronicles, calendars, and medieval poetry. Classical authors are represented by manuscripts of Vergil and Cicero; the Greek fathers by Basil and Origen (in Latin translation); the Latin fathers by Augustine, Jerome, and Gregory. Medieval writers include Isidore, Bede, Paul the Deacon, Notker Balbulus, Bern of Reichenau, and Thomas Aquinas; and on the secular side, Boethius, Priscian, Wirnt von Gravenburg, Eberhard of Bethune, and Ludolphus de Luco. There are numerous liturgical manuscripts, many of them with early examples of musical notation, including a substantial portion of an eleventh-century breviary; sequentiaries with works by Notker Balbulus and Gottschalk; and seventeen leaves of a twelfth-century antiphonary from Lambach that shed new light on the performance there of a Magi play. Manuscripts written in Italy, Spain, France, England, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and the Low Countries are represented. A few items can be attributed to specific writing centres, including scriptoria in Luxeuil, Reims, Tours, Fresing, Fulda, Schaffhausen, Lambach, Kremsmunster, and Melk. New.

Epigraphie medievale
Paperback, 360 p., 65 ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503506470. Languages: French.

Reformations, Three Medieval Authors in Manuscript and Movable Type
Hardcover. XVI 231 p., 4 b/w ill., 1 b/w tables, 160 x 240 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503523163. This volume discusses the key shift from manuscript to print culture in the history of books, taking The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman as models of the way in which a medieval text's unique tradition influenced its transition from manuscript to print. The forces of the Reformation era did not produce the same effect across the varied textual legacy of the Middle Ages. Every text that made the transition from manuscript to print brought with it a set of concerns, a tendency to address a particular readership in particular ways, a physical presence developed in manuscript culture, all of which might shape the pathways by which a text might arrive in print, and what it might look like when it got there. This study follows The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman from their circulation in manuscript to their presentation in print, in order to track how each of them survived the metamorphosis of the relationship between writers and readers as the new technology was introduced. Taken together, the three case studies demonstrate to scholars of any medieval literature the variety of possible impacts made when texts composed in manuscript culture were prepared for printing. The great force exerted by the technological and cultural developments of the English Reformation, not least the more centralized legislative regulation of the press, has long been central to the study of the history of books. This volume takes into account the ways in which individual textual traditions pushed back or accelerated the forces of early modern reform, producing their own plural reformations.

Catalogue of Medieval Manuscripts of Latin Commentaries on Aristotle in British Libraries I: Oxford
Hardback, 446 p., 1 colour ill., 152 x 229 mm. ISBN 9782503542324. This is the first of a projected series of four volumes describing manuscripts and fragments in British libraries containing commentaries on the Latin Aristotle. This volume covers the Bodleian Library and the college libraries of the University of Oxford. It lists 397 items, including portfolios of fragments from more than one original book, dating from the late twelfth century until c. 1500.

Hardcover. 240 p., 85 b/w ill. 16 colour ill., 220 x 280 mm, Languages: French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503529790.

Folio (235 x 314 mm). German ms. on paper with calligraphic captions and several half-titles. 453 ff. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin on wooden boards. Wants ties. Exceptionally attractive and important manuscript from the Bohemian Royal offices; the principal document of the Bohemian national finances in the second year of the rule of Emperor Maximilian II. A beautiful and hitherto unknown document of Renaissance bookkeeping in its well-preserved original binding. - In the present manuscript, Johann Rabenhaupt, head of the Royal bursary and responsible for the accounting year 1565, has testified the correct statement of revenues and expenditures by his signature on every page. The volume begins with an alphabetical index, arranged in double pages and listing revenues (on left) and payments (on right) by name. Among the payers and recipients are several important names, most of them members of German-Bohemian, Czech and Polish noble families, the Tyrolean glass manufacturer Sebastian Hochstetter von Scheibenegg (d. 1573), but also the great physician Pietro Andrea Mattioli (1500-77): "Petter Andreas Mathiolo [...] (f. 263v). Mattioli, known especially for his Dioscorides commentary, moved to Prague in 1552 as personal physician to Archduke Ferdinand, where he was later to be made head medical advisor to Emperor Maximilian II (cf. Hirsch IV, 168). The volume not only documents salaries, duties, and court expenditures, but also the receipt of border taxes, Turk taxes, tithes, loans, deposits, realties, costs of funerals and the Prague castle vineyard, etc. - Johannes Rabenhaupt von Sucha, the man responsible for this splendid Renaissance account book, was a descendant of an old Bohemian noble family which is also documented in the Palatinate, in Franconia, and in Upper Austria. Although there have been attempts at biographical studies of the Royal bursar Rabenhaupt (without knowledge of the present manuscript), historical science has been forced to admit its temporary failure in this respect (see literature below). - Slight worming to several ff. Some offsetting of ink, but generally very well legible and hardly browned. The finely blindstamped binding shows a wide border of arched friezes; the central compartment bears the ms. title. On the back cover, the friezes frame a roll representing Virtues; central compartment decorated with two parallel arched friezes. Edges, spine-ends, and endpapers with traces of professional restoration; otherwise perfect. Beket Bukovinská, "Wer war Johann Rabenhaupt? Unbeachtete Aspekte in den Beziehungen zwischen Prag und Südwest-Deutschland", in: Rudolf II, Prague and the World. Papers from the International Conference. Prague, 2-4 September, 1997.
